Tutoring Experience: Tutored German at A-level, GCSE and university levels. Covered areas such as oral exam preparation, coursework proofreading, spelling. Taught English and Maths at a variety of levels: Taught GCSE English Literature, English Language, French and Maths to various pupils with tutoring firm `Tutor House` since graduating. Taught 11+ English and Maths privately Taught English as a foreign language privately while living in Hamburg, Germany. Also volunteered as an English foreign language tutor in Vienna. Taught Year 9 Maths to a group of 3 pupils at Bacon`s College in after school classes for a school term while in uni. Tutoring Philosophy: I love to learn, and in addition to my degree I teach myself languages such as Spanish and Dutch, and skills such as statistics and coding. I believe that effective learning is enjoyable learning. When teaching myself or my pupils, I have found that understanding the concepts is crucial. This brings the most satisfaction and the best results. However, this must be balanced by learning facts and achieving little victories to stay motivated and engaged. I plan my lessons by balancing these two elements. Every pupil learns differently and I try out various methods to see which one fits best. I usually combine visual and verbal learning, using graphs and mind maps as well as explaining material verbally. I particularly enjoy establishing relationships with my pupils based on trust and encouragement, and seeing them improve and reach their potential. I find that pupils often underestimate themselves and need to be shown that they can tackle harder work if they put their minds to it.

I am an approachable and diligent graduate from Cambridge University, where I studied my undergraduate in Philosophy and Psychology and my Masters in Psychology. I now work as a Research Psychologist at Cambridge University and University College London. I love teaching, and have experience working with students aged between 8 and 21. I first discovered my teaching talent assisting a close school friend through his A levels. With my help he moved from achieving A B C E in his AS levels to 2A*s and an A at A Level, going on to study with me at Cambridge University. Most recently, I have supervised university students studying my specialist areas within mental health, given lectures and one-to-one lessons on Cambridge summer schools, and provided classroom support to teenage children with special educational needs. I believe teaching is at its best when it is a discussion. I make a real effort to ensure students feel able to ask even the most basic questions so we can quickly identify areas of weakness and address them. By working together to expand the student's knowledge and explore their areas of particular interest, I am able to foster genuine interest in students, and provide them with a strong basis of knowledge from which to excel. I feel confident in my ability to build an excellent relationship with my students, and I can't wait to work with you and your children in the future!

I am a Masters student at KCL, achieving First Class grades. Previously, I have tutored and supported children as a Learning Support Assistant at KS2, having completed an induction course for Primary Teaching assistance. This coupled with my previous role as an Outdoor Education Instructor has resulted in developing my innate ability to build friendly and professional rapports with children, which I have found to conducive to both encouraging confidence and enthusiasm towards learning. Whilst working as an LSA I oversaw the tutoring of a small group of children struggling with timetables, which through patience and positive reinforcement saw their success rate rocket. I also planned and held 1:1 sessions with children who were struggling generally at school. Through the use of engaging, hands-on resources outside of the classroom, I was able to create a fun and motivated environment in which the children were able to move forward in areas of learning that they had found difficult within the pressures of a classroom. This was both rewarding for the children and myself. This was aided by my role as an Outdoor Education Instructor, where I was able to develop skills to motivate children in alternative ways. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, cycling and playing badminton, and generally being outdoors. I also read extensively, non-fiction and fiction alike. I also attend weekly 'Practical Philosophy' classes, where we discuss philosophies from East to West and learn practices and wisdom to create more mindfulness, awareness and empathy in our daily life. In my time as an LSA I found short, mindful exercises to be greatly beneficial to the children I worked with, settling and focusing them on the present activity and helping to calm any anxieties about learning.

English also features heavily throughout the entrance examination process. Whether the student is applying for a school at 7+, 11+, 13+ or 16+, they will have to prove their propensity in English. Being prepared for the English entrance examination, at any level, is important to school entry.

Our Common Entrance English tutors have all had several years tutoring experience. They work closely with students to get them into their first-choice schools. These specialist exams require extensive amount of preparation, and often have several stages, such as the Commons Pre-Test, interviews and assessment days, and the Common Entrance exams themselves. With that in mind, being prepared for each component is hugely important.

Tutor House tutors have helped students attain places at Eton College, Harrow School, Stowe School, Habedashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, Westminster School, City of London, Wycombe Abbey and many more. We understand how competitive the independent school entry process can be, which is why we only work with the best Common Entrance tutors across London and the UK.

Tutoring FAQs

A

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

A

Booking and paying for private tuition has never been easier! As a customer, you’ll need to add your credit or debt card details to your profile after you sign in. You can pay the tutor directly and securely through the Tutor House website. However, if you do pay outside of the Tutor House site, you will not be protected by our 48 hour Cancelation Policy, nor our Disputes or Refunds Policy, we also do not guarantee that you’ll be protected from fraud. We do not charge you a joining fee or an administration fee, instead we allow you to interact with your chosen tutor directly. You pay the tutor online using a debit or credit card, with your booking being secure and private. Stripe are PCI compliant, so you’re protected from fraud, and can we issued refunds without any cost to you. (But only if you pay through the website, please see our terms).

A

You can then filter these tutors according to experience, price, and recommendation. A

Yes, we do take a fee, but at a fraction of the rate which other companies charge. We don’t have a sign up fee for new customers, we don’t charge an introduction fee, and we don’t charge administration fees. However, we do charge a small commission which pays for the security of tutors (we meet all tutors, check their DBS certificates and ensure they are who they say there are), and the maintenance of the site. If you have any problems using the site, you can always email or call us.

A

Once you have made the lesson request, you can communicate with the tutor. You can discuss your tuition requirements and the lesson timing with in-app instant messaging. The messaging is instant, so your tutor will receive the notification via both; the website and email. Hence he or she can respond to immediately. You may wish to discuss your preferred lesson time and date, or discuss which exam board you’re studying for A-levels and GCSE’s, or even to discuss specific text and books which you are currently studying. Also, You can communicate with the tutor with the instant in-app messaging at any point (before or after the booking has been made). Please note that it is possible for you and the tutor to mutually agree to booking changes after this stage. This must be done within the messenger app on the website. You can also use the same means of comunication to find out more about the tutor, after you have requested a booking. In addition to this you can always check the tutors reviews and ranking.

A

Yes, we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy. Our policy protects both tutor and customer. You can cancel your booking without incurring any charges as long as it’s cancelled at least 48 hours before the lesson is due to take place. However, if you cancel your lesson within 48 hours you will be charged the full amount. If there is an unforeseen circumstance, then both the tutor and Tutor House will discuss this with you. In some situations lessons can be rescheduled (free of charge), but this is at the tutor’s discretion.

A

Once you have found tutors which fit your criteria you can send an enquiry to them straight away. You’ll need to register with Tutor House before you can contact tutors (this is to order to ensure that you are protected by our Cancellation Policy and Refund Policy). To send an enquiry to your selected tutor(s) add them to your enquiry list and confirm by pressing the button at the bottom of the page. If you are a new user you will then be asked to register. If you are a returning user you will be prompted to sign into your account. Once signed in you will need to fill out your enquiry details and teaching requirements before sending your message to your selected tutors. After the enquiry has been sent we will contact you within 48 hours. If your tutor of choice has not replied within this time we will either contact them on your behalf or put you in touch with another of our highly experienced tutors.

A

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.
