I have worked for the last 10 years as a tutor of English and literacy consultant. Before this I worked as an editor and writer. I am a published and prize winning poet alongside my teaching practice. I have over 7000 hours of one to one teaching experience. After qualifying as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language in 2008 I taught on a freelance level around London and internationally, mainly on a one to one basis. Highlights include teaching a Ukrainian pop star as she toured the UK on a tour bus. From 2009 onwards I moved onto tuition for the common entrance/11 and 13+ exam, working mainly in London and helping students to gain entry to many of the top grammar and public schools. These include Charterhouse, Dulwich, Westminster, Marlborough, Alleyns and many more. For the last 7 years I have been working a minimum of 20 hours a week for Connexus, a London-based tutoring organization. Most of these students have been from Russia and Slavic nations. Every summer I teach abroad in Italy, France, Monaco, Switzerland and several other European countries. My role is often that of an academic mentor, and I have had a number of clients for several years, guiding them through the age brackets. For much of 2016 and 2017 I taught in Zurich Switzerland with a client. I also provide Connexus with literacy assesments and material for their website. My tutoring work has taken me through the various school exams (I can teach English up to A-Level), but I have also tutored university-level students. I am an Associate Consultant with the National Literacy Trust and have produced literacy resources for a number of organizations. I produced the materials for the NLT prisons reading groups for several years. I have produced 11+ resources for the Bond Papers (Oxford University Press) and the Ministry of Stories based in London. I also produced materials for the McDonalds Secret Seven Happy Meal promotion. I have written two books of educational resources; one in association with the NLT, the other in association with my own company Prompt Arts, who also produce creative writing workshops, seminars and events, as well as educational materials. I have been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize for poetry for the last two years. I almost exclusively use my own resources in my teaching practice and believe in a ‘creative reading’ approach to literature. My teaching comes from a sound understanding of the mechanics of the language (EFL), as well as a creative sense of the possibilities of language and literature. I think of myself as a practitioner first and a tutor second, and I believe this offers a crucial alternative perspective for school-age pupils. References available on request.

I am an Oxford and KCL graduate with three years tutoring experience. I pride myself in being really approachable and friendly, while also motivating my students to achieve as much as possible through the time we spend together. I get a huge amount of satisfaction watching a student improve and develop what we've learnt together into independent confidence. Working with my past tutees, we have managed to get them into their number one school of choice, achieve top marks in their end of year school tests, and in the most recent set of public examinations, exceed early expectations with a 9 in IGCSE English Literature. A little bit about me: for my secondary schooling I went to Dulwich College, where I received 10A*s at GCSE and then 3 A*s at A Level. I went on to study English Literature and Language at the University of Oxford and achieved a First Class BA degree, before reading for a MA in Film Studies at King's College London. I was awarded a Distinction and the Best Postgraduate Dissertation Prize. Alongside my tutoring work I am a screenwriter and film director. My films have screened and won awards at film festivals, including London and the Berlinale, as well as being broadcast on the BBC. My film work has been an incredibly useful background to bring to my tutoring. Many of the skills I teach are essential to the work I do in film; being able to demonstrate the exciting real life application of analytical skills, linguistic dexterity and focus to a disinterested or struggling student has been an excellent source of motivation and inspiration in my work.

Tutoring FAQs

A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.

A

Once you have made the lesson request, you can communicate with the tutor. You can discuss your tuition requirements and the lesson timing with in-app instant messaging. The messaging is instant, so your tutor will receive the notification via both; the website and email. Hence he or she can respond to immediately. You may wish to discuss your preferred lesson time and date, or discuss which exam board you’re studying for A-levels and GCSE’s, or even to discuss specific text and books which you are currently studying. Also, You can communicate with the tutor with the instant in-app messaging at any point (before or after the booking has been made). Please note that it is possible for you and the tutor to mutually agree to booking changes after this stage. This must be done within the messenger app on the website. You can also use the same means of comunication to find out more about the tutor, after you have requested a booking. In addition to this you can always check the tutors reviews and ranking.

A

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

A

Tutor House endeavours to ensure that both tutors and clients have the best possible experience with our service. We’re always here to help, so do reach out and contact us. If you ever have unresolved disputes with your tutor we will assist you in reaching a mutual agreement. We will do our utmost to try and resolve all disputes; however we may not be in a position to resolve every dispute. Please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

A

Finding a tutor with Tutor House is fast, simple, and secure. Our online tutoring platform helps you find, message and book tutors within a few clicks. Simply enter your required subject with the level and your location, and our website will return a list of recommended tutors. You can then filter these tutors according to experience, price, and recommendation. Each tutor has a detailed profile with a personal statement and details about their qualifications and teaching experience.

A

After selecting your tutor for your desired material, you can book a lesson right away! Send an inquiry to your selected Tutor and once a tutor accepts your inquiry, it will be registered as an ‘open enquiry’ within your messages tab. This is where you will be able to communicate with our tutors, discuss your requirements, arrange lesson times, and book and pay for lessons. When you submit your booking request, the credit card details provided will be subject to an authorisation hold (to the total amount agreed with the tutor for the cost of the initial session and for any other lessons which will take place thereafter). Not only that, but you can also rate and review your tutor once you’ve had your lesson! Tutor House values your feedback.

A

If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time. Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. If the tutor fails to do this then please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

A

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

A

Yes, we do take a fee, but at a fraction of the rate which other companies charge. We don’t have a sign up fee for new customers, we don’t charge an introduction fee, and we don’t charge administration fees. However, we do charge a small commission which pays for the security of tutors (we meet all tutors, check their DBS certificates and ensure they are who they say there are), and the maintenance of the site. If you have any problems using the site, you can always email or call us.

A

Once you have found tutors which fit your criteria you can send an enquiry to them straight away. You’ll need to register with Tutor House before you can contact tutors (this is to order to ensure that you are protected by our Cancellation Policy and Refund Policy). To send an enquiry to your selected tutor(s) add them to your enquiry list and confirm by pressing the button at the bottom of the page. If you are a new user you will then be asked to register. If you are a returning user you will be prompted to sign into your account. Once signed in you will need to fill out your enquiry details and teaching requirements before sending your message to your selected tutors. After the enquiry has been sent we will contact you within 48 hours. If your tutor of choice has not replied within this time we will either contact them on your behalf or put you in touch with another of our highly experienced tutors.
