Hi, my name's Billy. I am a UCL Masters Graduate in English. I am an aspiring Secondary English teacher hoping for a place on the Teach First graduate program. I am restless with creative approaches to passing on my knowledge and my passion for English literature, English language, and education at a wide range of levels and abilities. I have taught in schools from primary to A-level and delivered outstanding, individualised private tuition from primary, through 11+, GCSE, A-level, Undergraduate and MSc. I have been a swimming teacher for six years, teaching all ages and abilities; really-really! 2-72! I have a high scoring first class honours degree in English Literature from Warwick and a Masters from UCL. Through studying and through teaching, I have learned the transformative power of literature in and out the classroom. In addition to helping students achieve their desired grades and admissions, my goal is to leave students with lifelong and lasting abilities to approach literature joyfully, confidently, and, through precise linguistic command, freely. By instilling students with the ability to pay close attention to the device of their texts, I help students negotiate assessment and come away with crucial, transferable and unforgettable skills. By providing consistent, clear and immediate feedback in conversation and in writing, I help my students develop the self-aware and reflexive outlook possessed by great readers and great writers. I enable my students to become independent and self-efficacious learners by adopting a constantly questioning approach in lasting preparation for the challenges of their assessments and afterwards. I am highly flexible and able to accommodate any special requests at short notice. I am able to prepare and deliver tuition on the same day if required. I can set as much or as little additional work as required by the vying demands of extra-curricular activities. I often leave students with extra-curricular reading recommendations with a view to renewing, refreshing and lateralising approaches to thinking through their studies. I will loan any books I recommend if they are in my personal library. I have access to academic articles and provide a wide range of learning resources and activities for completion during and after lessons. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, including those pertaining to education consultation such as university admissions queries. I will be delighted to answer any questions whether or not you intend to book tuition. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you. Testimonials: " 5 stars. I am a highly experienced tutor currently studying a Masters in Applied Clinical Psychology at the University of Exeter. I studied the International Baccalaureate myself but am experienced in tutoring the IB, A-Levels and GCSE. Due to having completed exams fairly recently myself and having tutored ever since I am still highly connected with the exam boards and the technique required to get great grades! It also means I understand the stress of this period of your life and so will work really holistically with you to make sure you not only get through this with the grades you want but also feeling you have succeed without too much pain! As I said, I have been tutoring since I finished my own exams meaning I have almost 4 years experience now. Through this time I have completed over 800 hours of lessons with more than 30 different students. This means I have seen almost everything and I know that no question is too small. I really appreciate the value of tutoring and have seen so many students gain in confidence through working with me and many have attributed great improvements in grades to our work. If you would like any evidence of previous student testimonials please feel free to ask! Currently I work in the following subject areas: GCSE Biology Chemistry English (Language and Literature) RS A-Level Psychology Biology IB Psychology For me tutoring is a two way street and I very much believe in us working together to get you where you need to be. I start every lesson with a brief review; how was your week in terms on the subject and what would you like out of today’s lesson? Then at the end of the lesson we review this again and this really helps you to keep track of your own learning. If you want homework for between sessions I am also happy to make suggestions based on areas I feel you need to work on. However, I know these years can be very stressful and so I will only add work if you want it. Overall, I am extremely flexible and can make whatever works for you work for me too!
