I am currently a Biochemistry Master's student studying at University College London (UCL). I previously graduated from Queen Mary, University of London with a BSc in Biochemistry. I gained my initial experience in tutoring by taking part in a tutoring programme which aimed to integrate students of the upper and lower sixth form years to provide personalized tutoring. Through this experience, I have helped a diverse group of students to achieve their full potential and be accepted into their top university choices. As a current graduate student myself, I am familiar with the stress and anxiety that A levels and GCSEs bring. I believe that the best way to alleviate this stress and anxiety is by tailoring and controlling your learning outside of the classroom. I take pride in providing personally tailored goals to enhance my students' learning, so that they can achieve their academic goals, in a pace and depth of understanding that fits their academic needs. My teaching approach is initially based upon identifying gaps and weaknesses of my students' knowledge, which may be hindering their progress in a specified subject. I then design my lessons around these sets of gaps and weaknesses, with accompanying lessons that reinforce the other course material that the student is currently covering. I believe that as a tutor, one of the major responsibilities is to promote the confidence of your students. I aim to achieve this by maintaining an encouraging atmosphere, where the students can feel relaxed and comfortable in, to ultimately nurture their learning in the years to come.
I trained 11 years ago as a secondary school teacher specialising in Drama and English. I have worked in various schools, from mixed comprehensives to grammar schools. I currently tutor students from KS1 English (primary) right up to KS4 GCSE English (Edexcel and AQA exam boards). I also tutor students in preparation for the 11+, 13+ and general entrance exams to selective schools. I have enjoyed assisting my younger pupils with their reading and comprehension skills, employing a variety of resources to help the children learn in a fun and engaging way. For the past 5 years I have held the position of Head of Performing Arts, this involves managing Drama, A level Theatre Studies, BTEC Performing Arts and Music. I work with a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds, and varying abilities, and help them to achieve and reach their potential in a supportive and engaging manner. I have conducted intervention groups for students less able in English, and one on one coursework sessions on a regular basis to support all students. I also coach students on their audition techniques for University and Drama School entrance exams. I am a friendly and approachable teacher, and I have a passion for education and the arts, and continue to perform, paint and play the piano in my spare time.
I have been tutoring on a one-to-one basis is Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire for the last five years, having tutored in London. Many of my pupils have jumped several grades after working with me, which is a very rewarding feeling! It is often the case that young people (particularly when they choose English literature for A-level) believe that English is somehow a “soft” subject, and then start to worry when they realise just how demanding it really is. Certainly certain texts, particularly Shakespeare, can seem intimidating, almost like a foreign language. But this is often down to the teachers not making the subject interesting, not because of the subject itself. What I try to do is make the experience of learning as entertaining and compelling as the subject deserves. As well as teaching, I have worked as an actor (including at the Royal Shakespeare Company), and have led post-performance discussions about the text and the writer’s intentions. After all, if the lessons aren’t engaging, then pupils won’t be engaged: it’s as simple as that.
