I am a recent award-winning graduate from the University of Warwick, having acquired a First Class and Distinction in a Bachelor's and Master's in Philosophy respectively. The bulk of my tutoring experience comes from my volunteering for Warwick's student mentor program. I was keen to assist both my peers and newer students get to grips with their course materials. Philosophy is a peculiar discipline insofar as good understanding merits persuasive argumentation. That is to say, to understand concepts in philosophy requires also that one can explain to others what they mean and their significance. My tutoring style therefore aims at bringing the subject to life for the student, I want the student to follow me in seeing why a philosophical problem is interesting and how to draw novel insights from these problems. I seek to ensure that the student is proactively and critically interrogating the material. In getting the student to engage with me in a critical dialogue, I hope to develop their own capacity to think independently on these issues. In addition to Philosophy (which I can teach up to degree level), I am confident to tutor for other subject qualifications I have listed in my profile.
I started out teaching GCSE mathematics in a private tutorial college in Wales 1987-1988. After that I returned to my home town and started giving tuition here in September 1988. I get about half of my students on recommendation. Every student who has come to me to resit the GCSE has obtained at least a grade C or the new equivalent. Many of my students have obtained grade A* at GCSE or A level. In 1997 I graduated with first class honours in mathematics from Goldsmiths College London where I won the Stanley Hails Prize. From 2009-2017 I taught maths from GCSE to Further Mathematics A Level AEA and STEP at an academy in Essex. I give the lessons online. I will always answer queries between lessons by email. I do not cover Decision Mathematics at A level. I have found that because I am very patient I can create an atmosphere in which people feel free to ask when they do not understand, both in a group and in an individual setting. There have been a few cases over the years when some people have only needed a few sessions because just one or two things were getting in their way and they had not felt able to ask about them when in a class.
I tutored Undergraduates in Engineering at the University of Oxford for 2 and a half years. This built my confidence to start tutoring privately, which I have been doing for the past two years. I have a positive attitude and a passion to assist and motivate struggling learners and is key to building confidence and achieving academic goals. I find, from my own experience, that people learn things differently and at different paces; when students struggle with a subject, it’s usually because their learning style conflicts with the style or pace with which it is being taught. Mentoring one-on-one gives the opportunity to learn at the student’s optimal pace. I strongly believe that success at school and beyond is based on strategy, time management, and self-confidence. My passion, diligence and creative skill-set drive my students to succeed.
