Through a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's in Materials Science and Engineering, I have developed a strong grasp on maths and physics and understand how important it is to build a strong foundation in these subjects at an early age. I aim to help students develop a healthy appreciation for these subjects early on. I have tutored a consistent set of students for long periods of time. Whilst studying for my first master's degree, I tutored two sisters in Maths and English for two years, and helped one of them with college entrance exams and applications, while I helped the other sister hone her ability to think and write creatively. During the last academic year, I took part in voluntary work where I taught the same six students for one year, helping them prepare for their SATs. I believe working consistently with children helps develop a better understanding of their learning capabilities and design teaching techniques to suit their learning style. I always endeavour to do this with my students.
I am a qualified primary school teacher with 14 years' experience. Much of my full-time teaching career included leading mathematics in primary schools in South London. Since September 2017 I have worked independently as a Primary Mathematics Specialist, providing after-school home tuition, focussed small-group work in schools, design and delivery of bespoke INSET sessions in schools, demonstration lessons and subject leader support. I am currently fully booked for after-school tuition and am now interested in providing one-to-one or small group maths tuition during school hours to children who are currently home-schooled. My style is very much a practical and visual one with a strong emphasis on engaging investigative maths using a growth mindset approach. My private pupil base has grown steadily through word of mouth, and I have retained all pupils since I began home-tutoring in September 2017. I love gardening and I also have an allotment where I grow my own vegetables. I also spend a lot of time with our very energetic puppy, Basil.
I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at UCL and work as a Trainee Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Education at McGill University, Canada. I specialized in developmental psychology during my MSc. Studies at the Anna Freud Center, UCL. Over the course of my academic, clinical and professional careers, I tutored undergraduate students with their prerequisite psychology courses (Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, Behavioural Neuroscience, Perception, Cognition). I have multiple years of experience working with hard-to-reach, hard-to-engage students in different complex settings. I am an experienced IB tutor in psychology and TOK. In addition, I mentor students with their university applications and personal statements (UCAS, Canadian & US applications). I believe in open, encouraging and attuned teaching. My basic tutoring approaches are to guide students to discover what type of learning style works for them; gain lots of feedback and tailor the sessions to suit the learning needs of students; combine multiple visual and creative strategies to encourage learning. I love to practice mindfulness and encourage all my students to use mindfulness strategies to deal with the different stressors in their lives. I am also a big fan of spoken word poetry.
