Experienced English Literature and Language tutor, also specialising in Geography, History and Psychology A-level tutoring. I graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2014 with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I also gained the Nottingham Advantage Award and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2014. Since then, I have completed the law conversion course (GDL) at the University of Law, gaining a distinction on this course. I then went on to complete the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the University of Law and am currently awaiting my results. In regard to my tutoring experience, I started tutoring when I was 17 years old, regularly assisting two children (between 8-14 years old) with their homework and teaching one of the girls how to play the piano. I then became a part time tutor whilst I was studying at the University of Nottingham. I have tutored a variety of subjects, including English Language, English Literature, Maths and History, from primary school level up to A-level. I have worked with a variety of individuals, some who struggle with the pace of teaching that they experience at school, and others who struggle with the atmosphere and with other children within their school. I have also acted as part of a team of tutors, who provided one child with his entire educational requirements, as he was unable to be taught in any of the local schools. Alongside my position as a private tutor, I also volunteered at a local primary school in Nottingham, where I worked with children outside of the main classroom on a one-to-one basis. The abilities of each child varied considerably, with some children feeling confident doing long division/multiplication and others struggling to recite basic times tables. This meant that each session had to be carefully tailored to each individual's needs, with different techniques being used to suit each child's requirements. I am a friendly and supportive tutor, who will work with each individual pupil, using different techniques and adapting my approach in a way that best supports each individual's learning style. Having received tutoring myself in previous years, I understand how important it is to find a tutor who understands you/your child, and who offers a kind, supportive and productive learning environment.

As a major academic scholar at Magdalen College School, Oxford, I studied maths and sciences at A-level, achieving grades of A* (Maths) AAA (Further Maths, Physics, Music). Although my greatest academic strengths are maths and physics, my personal interest led me to study Music at the University of Leeds, where I graduated with a 1st Class Honours degree. I tailored my degree to included a mix of musicology, performance, pedagogical techniques, and a strong side component of philosophy. I'm patient and friendly, and am skilled at quickly developing a rapport with children and teenagers. I currently work as an instrumental tutor and freelance musician. I have been giving one-on-one guitar lessons since 2016. I teach both children and adults from beginners to advanced players. As well as this I have studied teaching techniques as part of my degree. I have also had experience in a language school working with teenage students visiting the UK to improve their English. This role required me to oversee groups of 10-20 students, plan their activities daily, develop a friendly yet authoritative rapport with them (which required excellent communication given their level of English). With a breadth of interests and skills that cross over sciences, arts and humanities, I am accustomed to approaching a range of problems using different conventions and styles of thinking. I aim to understand a student's own way of thinking and learning and use this to develop their weaker areas in ways to which they are most receptive. In doing so, I aim to develop their confidence in their own ability to tackle problems and produce work of a high standard in areas they might not initially feel so comfortable in.

I am very enthusiastic about helping students through repetition, constant encouragement and in finding different ways to covey hard-to-grasped ideas, to understand and make progress in subject areas they might initially regarded as challenging. I am very keen to pick up where students are in their understanding of any aspect of the mathematics or biology curricula and through linking ideas already familiar to them, to patiently guide and inspire them to achieve a strong sense of mastery that they too can feel proud of. Being employed as a Senior Biomedical Scientist for over 12 years, has given me insights/ awareness into the role/ utility that many of the fundamentals covered in subject curricula play in allowing students to fully grasped more advanced concepts that will be introduced as they grow older; I take great pleasure in helping them to ‘join up their dots’ as I believe the more they understand and weave together now, the easier the facts they are required to know will be remembered.
