With over 6 years of experience as a tutor in the UK, France and Spain, working with students aged 5-25, I have developed a strong understanding of the different needs of students, at various levels. I am proud to say that all my students have achieved significant progress. Notably, I have been teaching two home-schooled GCSE students for a year and helped them achieve much better results than they had anticipated. I am passionate about langue-learning and I would describe my approach to tutoring as flexible. I believe that a good tutor should be able to work closely with their students to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This then allows the tutor to teach in a manner that suits the student best. I strongly believe that learning an additional language is something highly beneficial and that everyone is capable of it when provided with the right tools. Finally, I try to make teaching engaging by making sure that my students get to discuss topics they are interested in. In my opinion, a good balance between theoretical and practical work is key to ensure that the teaching is enjoyable and of high-quality.

My name is Marie and I am a French native speaker. I’ve lived, studied and worked in France, Spain and England. I learnt Spanish as part of my degree (3years) and lived in Spain for five years. I learnt English mainly through immersion and learnt Hindi through self-study (more than 10 years) and visits to India. I spent 5 month in India to teach English and learn Hindi. I have a French post graduate degree in Teaching MFL and the PGCE in MFL. I have taught in a variety of contexts: Private Language Schools, State Schools, businesses and home tutoring, both face to face and online. I’ve been teaching languages – and learning - for the best part of the last 25 years and through these experiences I can, not only empathise with the doubts and struggles of my learners but also make very informed decisions about their needs and I am therefore able to teach them and help them to learn more effectively. The teacher’s role, it seems to me, is, above all, to facilitate and foster learning in a positive and productive environment. I love one-to-one or small group teaching as it is a great opportunity to create a personalised dynamic and to use materials in a more relevant, real-world way without the pressure of the competitive, over-crowded classroom but with the benefit of a hands-on approach. I use a variety of materials which range from traditional published text-books to more authentic materials. The choice of material depends on the age of the learner, their needs and interests. For younger learners the material tends to be more visual and interactive, for learners studying for state school exams the material will be more traditional and for older learners the material tends to be more functional and /or professional. The material in all cases ensures practice in the receptive skills of reading and listening and the productive skills of speaking and writing.

I am currently a Master’s student and teaching assistant at the American University of Beirut, having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2018 with a BA in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies (First Class Honours). I have experience teaching undergraduates and marking their written work. In the first year of my Master's degree (2018-19) I worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the American University of Beirut. In my first semester, my work was primarily involved marking undergraduate essays for a course entitled Arab Political Thought & Ideology. In my second semester, I led two seminars and lectured another two classes for a Senior Seminar in Political and Social Theory. I also have experience tutoring GCSE and A-Level French, having followed two pupils for six months in 2013-14. I grew up in London, speaking both English and Italian and I have published translations of academic (mainly art historical and curatorial) texts from French into English. I also work almost daily with primary sources in written Arabic for my research, so I am available to give language classes in Italian, French and Arabic along with Spanish, a language I have also studied and gained fluency in. I can also help with issues relating to academic writing and presentation, as well as aiding secondary school pupils with exams in Philosophy, Religious Studies, Ancient History/Classical Civilisation and Sociology.

University French Tuition

French is among the most applicable, useful and versatile subjects a student can study at University, whether as a single or dual honors degree. French is well established as one of the most widely spoken languages in the world with French speakers on every continent. 29 countries list French as their official language as do numerous international institutions from the UN to the EU, WTO and NATO. A French degree is a qualification that opens up career prospects across the globe, while also proving invaluable in the fields of business, government, translation and travel.

Though earlier French studies at GCSE and A-level may have provided students with the basics, it is during a French degree course that students can truly achieve fluency, giving them both the confidence and ability to converse freely and in detail in this versatile, elegant and global language. Beyond simply speaking French, University French courses provide students with an immersive, comprehensive and nuanced understanding of Francophile culture. From the history of France and its former colonies to the literature, art and films that are born from this vibrant language, French University courses open the door to an appreciation of everything French. Students emerge from a French University course not only having cultivated impressive language skills, but as rounded, thoughtful and worldly individuals.

Incredibly beneficial though a top French degree qualification is, language courses are notoriously challenging at this advanced level of education. As the complexity of vocabulary and grammar increase, many students find keeping up with their French studies extremely difficult. Equally, the process of developing an in-depth understanding of French and Francophone culture requires the absorption of large amounts of information and materials that can feel overwhelming. University French courses are varied with students expected to demonstrate a broad range of skills and knowledge, the increased workload and linguistic intricacy often proving a little mind-boggling with the potential to leave students feeling stressed and demotivated. Working with a University French tutor enables students to make sense of the various elements of their course, fine-tune their skills and develop their cultural awareness. With the support of a private tutor, students can really get to grips with their course and rediscover their passion for all things French.

General information about studying French at University

There are a number of University degree courses offered by top Universities that are centred around the study of French, giving students a wide range of options to best reflect their interests and academic strengths. Some of the most common degree options offered by Universities include:

  • BA French / French Studies
  • BA Modern Languages and Cultures
  • BA Modern European Languages and History (specialising in French as a single language)
  • BA French Combined Honours, for example French and Sociology, French and History, French and Politics, French and Film Studies or French and Economics

The exact content of courses will vary depending on the type of degree, which University you attend, your course specialism and chosen modules. However, most University French Degree courses include some combination of practical training in spoken and written language as well as extensive study of the culture, thought and media of the French language. Students will be expected to learn how to speak, read and write fluently in French as well as choosing specialism modules such as linguistics, particular periods of French history or French films.

Most French courses are four years in length with students normally spending their second or third year living in a French-speaking country. For some students, the year abroad consists of studying at a French University. Other courses give students the option to spend a year working in a French-speaking country, often as a paid language assistant in a foreign school. The goal of the year abroad is to provide students with an immersive experience, enhancing their language skills and cultural understanding beyond that which can be learned in a classroom. The year abroad is where many students achieve fluency in French.

Students who are studying French as part of a joint honours with another language (such as Spanish) or subject (such as History), will find their course is split roughly equally between courses.

Most University French courses will be assessed via a combination of both written and oral exams, coursework projects and a dissertation in the student’s final year.

Benefits of Studying French at University

Successfully studying French at this advanced stage in education has a wide range of benefits from developing valuable personal skills to opening up fantastic career opportunities. Students studying French at this level will not only find that their language abilities reach heights beyond any they thought they would reach, they will also cultivate critical skills and unearth a wealth of cultural, historical and social knowledge applicable to numerous elements of their life outside of academia.

Skills - The most obvious skills gained through completion of a French degree are the practical French communication skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. French degree graduates will have an excellent grasp of the French language, particularly given their year abroad, enabling them to communicate fluently with French speakers. In addition to their French language skills, students will also gain a comprehensive understanding of Francophile culture in general, with expertise in their chosen specialisms.

Aside from the skills directly related to French, students will also acquire a number of transferable skills that will prove valuable across walks of life. A French degree cultivates expert research and presentation skills, superb written and oral communication ability, and adeptness in working both as a team and independently. The course, and in particular the year abroad, teaches students self-sufficiency, problem-solving and how to use their initiative, as well as building their self-confidence. As a result, students emerge from their University experience as well-rounded, confident and competent individuals who are able to take on a wide variety of challenging careers.
Beyond University - Successfully completing a French degree gives students a plethora of lucrative career opportunities both in the UK and overseas. As an international language, a degree in French opens up career options in international government, NGOs and business organisations with careers ranging from diplomacy to travel agencies. Many students go on to take positions overseas, while others use their French proficiency and transferable skills to obtain positions at the top of international businesses with UK bases. A French degree is hugely versatile with career prospects spanning fields and industries, giving graduates a virtually endless list of employment options.

    Tutoring FAQs

    A

If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time. Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. If the tutor fails to do this then please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

When you submit your booking request, the credit card details provided will be subject to an authorisation hold (to the total amount agreed with the tutor for the cost of the initial session and for any other lessons which will take place thereafter). By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location.
