I have taught at a Civitas Schools for a year. Civitas is a charity which provides the quality of private tutoring for socio-economically disadvantaged children. Here I taught Maths and English to a range of children between 8-12 years old. I have also privately tutored one-to-one for a year. This was at higher levels, as it was in A-level and GCSE Chemistry, with students going on to reach their target grades. Furthermore, I also have experience in online tutoring in all sciences. In all, I am an experienced science and maths tutor ideal for tutees from primary school to sixth form and beyond.

Hi, I'm Susanne, a language tutor with over 10 years experience principally teaching German and English, and additionally French, to a broad range of students from professional backgrounds, from large corporate companies down to smaller institutions and private clients. My experience covers teaching individuals as well as groups, ranging from the introduction of base concepts for complete beginners (A1), through to advanced level and conversational training (C2) for the very experienced. I also help with exam preparation, i.e. GCSE, A-Levels and Goethe-Certificate. My first years of teaching focused on pupils and after school tutoring whilst I was studying Product Design in Germany. I took up teaching again in 2013 in London and acquired my TEFL qualification. This allowed me to reach out to private professionals and also to teach in companies, who offer their employees language classes on a regular basis to improve their business relationships with Germany. My approach is very much tailored to each learner’s specific needs. I’m a very dedicated and personable teacher who enjoys the variety of different individuals and finding ways to help them learn best. I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy all aspects that it encompasses. I'm keen on continuing to develop my language knowledge outside of teaching. I have basic knowledge of Italian and have taken up Spanish, which is very useful for me to also help Spanish speaking students learn other languages, as having knowledge of their language allows me to draw parallels between the two, and so accelerate their learning. I very much welcome the variety of students’ backgrounds and can often explain grammar structures in comparing and relating to their own language. I also offer field trips for those who are a bit more advanced in German or English and wish to learn and have fun to express themselves about specific topics, i.e. art, education, politics, or train the distinct use of their linguistic style, i.e. stylistic devices, figures of speech or set locutions. This could be a visit to a museum or to the Royal College of Art, where we look at works and talk about them, put them in context etc. Outside of teaching I love being outdoors, in particular rock climbing and hiking and exploring new places. I also am a very keen baker. Testimonials of my previous clients: Michael Penn / Professor, Stanford University (10.08.2018) "Susanne is an amazingly gifted pedagogue and a great German teacher. Regardless of your level, you’ll learn tons working with her. Susanne’s enthusiasm and love for the language is contagious. She constantly finds innovative approaches to help one improve—whether they be articles tailored to your interests, word games, or museum trips to see German artists. She is extremely patient and is able to find exactly the right level of intervention to help lessen mistakes but still boosting your confidence. Her background and even her previous work in design give her teaching a depth and breadth that is wonderful (and fun) to be a part of. She perfectly balances organized (she always has a clear learning plan) with flexible (she tailors things, both beforehand and-the-fly, depending on what’s happening in the classroom). Because German is essential for my work, I’ve had dozens of German tutors over the years and Susanne is among the very best." Oliver Smeeth / Corporate Cousel (5.06.2018) "I’m so pleased I found Susanne after struggling to make progress with other teachers and classes. Susanne quickly worked out how best to help me tailoring each lesson to address gaps in my knowledge and delivering content in a way that works for me. She has also been incredibly flexible working around my sometimes long and unpredictable working hours, which I’ve really appreciated. Overall Susanne is an incredibly dedicated, personal and professional German teacher all goes above and beyond to help clients make real progress. I really look forward to my classes with her. Thanks Susanne for making learning German fun again!" Ann-Catherine Mathias, mother of 13 year-old pupil (4.07.2017) "Susanne Rueb has been tutoring my son Niklas (aged 13) in German and French for over 9 months on an almost weekly basis. She is a lovely friendly person who has managed to motivate our son to concentrate for 2 hours on a Saturday morning, which I had thought impossible. As an Anglo-German family we took the decision to send our children to the German school in London but have found that, despite speaking German at home, our eldest son needed some additional help to improve particularly his written German. He was also beginning to struggle in French and had lost all motivation or ambition in relation to this subject. As is often the case, he found it hard to work with a parent and so we looked for a tutor would encourage and motivate him. We were incredibly fortunate to find Susanne. Niklas responded incredibly well to her from the start. She manages to structure the lessons in a way that keep Niklas interested and engaged. She prepares material for each lesson and makes sure that she is aware of curriculum and tests planned at school, so that they can practice appropriately. Susanne often goes over homework and previous tests, which Niklas has found particularly helpful. She frequently brings additional teaching materials that help to make lessons more fun. Niklas really likes working with her. Since Susanne started working with him, Niklas’ written German (and his corresponding grades) have improved significantly. In French the gradual deterioration in his grade has stopped and they are improving. Whereas he was heading towards a 4 (German marking - an English D) he is now working towards a 2 (B). I would certainly recommend Susanne as a tutor."

Of note here is my post as Language Teacher in various schools in Hull, where I was responsible for teaching secondary school children French and German, marking their work and preparing lessons. Further, I have held a post as Educational Assistant at the Museum of Bath at Work where I was responsible for carrying out and preparing formal and informal learning sessions for adults and school-age children. Lastly, I worked as Nursery Assistant for a German nursery where I supervised up to 15 children and engaged them in structured activities. While in these posts I have learned about formal and informal learning, teaching, public speaking, lesson preparation and how to relate to children. I have also learned to work on my own initiative and as part of a team. In addition to my education work, I have completed a Preparing to Teach in Life Long Learning course as well as various short courses on education in a museum setting.

A-Level German Course Breakdown

Whilst exam boards differ slightly in terms of the specifics of their A-Level German courses, they are all relatively similar in terms of their structure, content and assessment methods. A-Level German syllabuses across exam boards are designed with the intent of testing students on their reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities. The course builds on the knowledge obtained by students at GCSE, and the syllabus content is centred around the interdisciplinary relationship between language, society and culture.

Throughout the course, students will be expected to demonstrate extensive cultural awareness through engaging with the context and history of Germany, developing their understanding of the culture that exists in German-speaking societies and how these societies have changed over time. In the first year of the course, the focus is largely based around the social context and artistic aspects of German-speaking countries. The second year of the course works on building on student’s knowledge about the social and political background of Germany in addition to teaching students about the intricate political and economic relationships that exist between Germany and other European countries.

Students studying German A-Level will also be expected to dedicate a significant amount of time to working on their grammatical skills. They will be required to exhibit an accomplished understanding of the structures and systems of grammar, and be able to implicate these in their own writing and speaking. Students must then use their grammatical knowledge in order to demonstrate that they can speak German spontaneously and creatively, showing that they can use the language to ask and answer questions, and argue a point effectively. Students will also need to study a cultural artefact in either the form of a text or a film, and then engage with it from an interrogatory perspective. They must demonstrate that they have understood the intention of the writer, the themes of the text studied and an appreciation of its wider social, cultural and political contexts.

A different language is a different vision of life - Federico Fellini

Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. A

After selecting your tutor for your desired material, you can book a lesson right away! Send an inquiry to your selected Tutor and once a tutor accepts your inquiry, it will be registered as an ‘open enquiry’ within your messages tab. This is where you will be able to communicate with our tutors, discuss your requirements, arrange lesson times, and book and pay for lessons. When you submit your booking request, the credit card details provided will be subject to an authorisation hold (to the total amount agreed with the tutor for the cost of the initial session and for any other lessons which will take place thereafter). Not only that, but you can also rate and review your tutor once you’ve had your lesson! Tutor House values your feedback.

    A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.

    A

Yes, we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy. Our policy protects both tutor and customer. You can cancel your booking without incurring any charges as long as it’s cancelled at least 48 hours before the lesson is due to take place. However, if you cancel your lesson within 48 hours you will be charged the full amount. If there is an unforeseen circumstance, then both the tutor and Tutor House will discuss this with you. In some situations lessons can be rescheduled (free of charge), but this is at the tutor’s discretion.

    A

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

    A

Once you have found tutors which fit your criteria you can send an enquiry to them straight away. You’ll need to register with Tutor House before you can contact tutors (this is to order to ensure that you are protected by our Cancellation Policy and Refund Policy). To send an enquiry to your selected tutor(s) add them to your enquiry list and confirm by pressing the button at the bottom of the page. If you are a new user you will then be asked to register. If you are a returning user you will be prompted to sign into your account. Once signed in you will need to fill out your enquiry details and teaching requirements before sending your message to your selected tutors. After the enquiry has been sent we will contact you within 48 hours. If your tutor of choice has not replied within this time we will either contact them on your behalf or put you in touch with another of our highly experienced tutors.

If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time.
