Hi, I'm Susanne, a language tutor with over 10 years experience principally teaching German and English, and additionally French, to a broad range of students from professional backgrounds, from large corporate companies down to smaller institutions and private clients. My experience covers teaching individuals as well as groups, ranging from the introduction of base concepts for complete beginners (A1), through to advanced level and conversational training (C2) for the very experienced. I also help with exam preparation, i.e. GCSE, A-Levels and Goethe-Certificate. My first years of teaching focused on pupils and after school tutoring whilst I was studying Product Design in Germany. I took up teaching again in 2013 in London and acquired my TEFL qualification. This allowed me to reach out to private professionals and also to teach in companies, who offer their employees language classes on a regular basis to improve their business relationships with Germany. My approach is very much tailored to each learner’s specific needs. I’m a very dedicated and personable teacher who enjoys the variety of different individuals and finding ways to help them learn best. I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy all aspects that it encompasses. I'm keen on continuing to develop my language knowledge outside of teaching. I have basic knowledge of Italian and have taken up Spanish, which is very useful for me to also help Spanish speaking students learn other languages, as having knowledge of their language allows me to draw parallels between the two, and so accelerate their learning. I very much welcome the variety of students’ backgrounds and can often explain grammar structures in comparing and relating to their own language. I also offer field trips for those who are a bit more advanced in German or English and wish to learn and have fun to express themselves about specific topics, i.e. art, education, politics, or train the distinct use of their linguistic style, i.e. stylistic devices, figures of speech or set locutions. This could be a visit to a museum or to the Royal College of Art, where we look at works and talk about them, put them in context etc. Outside of teaching I love being outdoors, in particular rock climbing and hiking and exploring new places. I also am a very keen baker. Testimonials of my previous clients: Michael Penn / Professor, Stanford University (10.08.2018) "Susanne is an amazingly gifted pedagogue and a great German teacher. Regardless of your level, you’ll learn tons working with her. Susanne’s enthusiasm and love for the language is contagious. She constantly finds innovative approaches to help one improve—whether they be articles tailored to your interests, word games, or museum trips to see German artists. She is extremely patient and is able to find exactly the right level of intervention to help lessen mistakes but still boosting your confidence. Her background and even her previous work in design give her teaching a depth and breadth that is wonderful (and fun) to be a part of. She perfectly balances organized (she always has a clear learning plan) with flexible (she tailors things, both beforehand and-the-fly, depending on what’s happening in the classroom). Because German is essential for my work, I’ve had dozens of German tutors over the years and Susanne is among the very best." Oliver Smeeth / Corporate Cousel (5.06.2018) "I’m so pleased I found Susanne after struggling to make progress with other teachers and classes. Susanne quickly worked out how best to help me tailoring each lesson to address gaps in my knowledge and delivering content in a way that works for me. She has also been incredibly flexible working around my sometimes long and unpredictable working hours, which I’ve really appreciated. Overall Susanne is an incredibly dedicated, personal and professional German teacher all goes above and beyond to help clients make real progress. I really look forward to my classes with her. Thanks Susanne for making learning German fun again!" Ann-Catherine Mathias, mother of 13 year-old pupil (4.07.2017) "Susanne Rueb has been tutoring my son Niklas (aged 13) in German and French for over 9 months on an almost weekly basis. She is a lovely friendly person who has managed to motivate our son to concentrate for 2 hours on a Saturday morning, which I had thought impossible. As an Anglo-German family we took the decision to send our children to the German school in London but have found that, despite speaking German at home, our eldest son needed some additional help to improve particularly his written German. He was also beginning to struggle in French and had lost all motivation or ambition in relation to this subject. As is often the case, he found it hard to work with a parent and so we looked for a tutor would encourage and motivate him. We were incredibly fortunate to find Susanne. Niklas responded incredibly well to her from the start. She manages to structure the lessons in a way that keep Niklas interested and engaged. She prepares material for each lesson and makes sure that she is aware of curriculum and tests planned at school, so that they can practice appropriately. Susanne often goes over homework and previous tests, which Niklas has found particularly helpful. She frequently brings additional teaching materials that help to make lessons more fun. Niklas really likes working with her. Since Susanne started working with him, Niklas’ written German (and his corresponding grades) have improved significantly. In French the gradual deterioration in his grade has stopped and they are improving. Whereas he was heading towards a 4 (German marking - an English D) he is now working towards a 2 (B). I would certainly recommend Susanne as a tutor."

Of note here is my post as Language Teacher in various schools in Hull, where I was responsible for teaching secondary school children French and German, marking their work and preparing lessons. Further, I have held a post as Educational Assistant at the Museum of Bath at Work where I was responsible for carrying out and preparing formal and informal learning sessions for adults and school-age children. Lastly, I worked as Nursery Assistant for a German nursery where I supervised up to 15 children and engaged them in structured activities. While in these posts I have learned about formal and informal learning, teaching, public speaking, lesson preparation and how to relate to children. I have also learned to work on my own initiative and as part of a team. In addition to my education work, I have completed a Preparing to Teach in Life Long Learning course as well as various short courses on education in a museum setting.

I am a highly experienced tutor of Mathematics, Physics, Science and German. I have been a private tutor since 2009. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities immensely. Seeing someone develop throughout the course of our work together is extremely rewarding. I am native German and graduated from (the German equivalent to) Grammar School with an A average, after which I did my Bachelors Degree here in London, graduating in the top set of my year. Being a native German speaker, I enjoy sharing my mother tongue with students from all around the world. Throughout the years I have taught students of all kinds of backgrounds including children of German parents, who wanted help raising their children bilingually, as well as UK students, who need help improving their German skills in school and adults, who want to learn the language to expand their career opportunities. My main focus group in Maths and Physics are students from the age of 11 to 16 (Levels KS3 to GCSE). I have also always found great interest and joy in Maths and Science and my main goal is not only to help students to improve their grades, but to also encourage them to find a greater understanding and fun in the subjects they might have a lack of enthusiasm for. I am able to communicate material that might sound hard and unmanageable in school in a clearer way, so that my students get a much better and deeper grasp of the subject. They are then able to transfer these acquired skills to their work in school. I only teach subjects that I feel passionate about and I believe that shows in my teaching approach. In my opinion learning a new language or improving oneself in a certain subject is a team effort between the teacher and the student, which is exactly how I treat my lessons. My lessons are tailored to the specific needs of my students. I follow their school curriculum to support their learning at school but alter from it, if I find a different approach to a certain topic would be beneficial to the student. Every students learns differently and I incorporate that into the development of our lessons. The same goes for my adult learner students. We all have a busy daily schedule and I acknowledge that. But I still keep a heavy focus on the goal set in the beginning of our lessons.

General information about studying German at University

Proficiency in modern languages has never been a more valuable skill for a student to possess, with job opportunities overseas constantly increasing. Throughout the German degree course, students will gain a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of language, history, society, culture and literature, whilst also cultivating their speaking and written German and language abilities, preparing them for a career within a wide range of industries.

The first year of a German degree course will generally focus on equipping students with a breadth of foundational knowledge and developing students’ skills in four areas of communication: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Students will also tend to study German linguistics, literature, film and history. The later years of the course often become far more focused, with the number of core modules decreasing, and students instead having increased freedom to choose which areas they’d like to explore. However, there will be some compulsory modules, focusing on honing a student’s linguistic skills, across the entire course. Optional module choices will vary considerably depending on the course, but they will usually consist of some options that are similar to the following:

  • Reading German Literature
  • Introduction to German Film Studies
  • Sex, Gender, and Society in Modern Germany
  • Media in Germany
  • Stories of War, Revolution and Globalisation
  • German Colonialism

By the time they graduate, students will not only have reached fluency in German but will also be able to discuss various complex social matters in the language, demonstrating that they have fully grasped how to spontaneously communicate in a coherent and logical manner. They will also have cultivated in-depth knowledge about Germany and its political, economic and social history.

Generally, German degree courses are four years in length, with students spending the third year in Germany, attending a German University and immersing themselves fully in German culture. This will strengthen student’s intercultural awareness and do wonders for their speaking language abilities. Assessments generally consist of a variation of long-form essays, translations, written and oral exams, and presentations.

Benefits of Studying German at University

Studying German at this critical stage in a student’s education has a range of benefits. Students will emerge from the course equipped with practical language skills and a depth of knowledge that will not only assist them in gaining a top grade at university but will ensure they are successful in achieving all their goals post-graduation.

Skills - The varied and complex nature of a German degree course means that students will develop a range of highly valued skills throughout their University journey. Aside from the obvious practical language skills attained, students will also cultivate a wealth of transferable skills that will strengthen their position as potential job candidates and help them to become well-rounded individuals. Following their German degree experience, students will be able to boast skills such as strong written and oral communication, analytical and critical thinking, independent research, confidence, as well as excellent organisation and time management. With the help of a University German tutor, students can ensure they get the most out of their degree, fostering all the right skills to ensure a successful future.
Beyond University - Several students decide to continue their study of language, opting to develop their linguistic abilities and theoretical knowledge further by specialising. For students who don’t wish to continue their studies, there are a vast array of exciting career options where proficiency in German is highly valued. Being able to communicate in German is a huge benefit and can open up doors in careers both in the private and public sectors, ranging from journalism or teaching to working in big-business or holding a position in government. Moreover, the transferrable skills attained through achieving a degree level qualification in German will set students up for a virtually endless list of careers.

German has the largest number of native speakers in the European Union and is amongst the ten most widely spoken languages across the globe. Moreover, Germany’s position as the world’s second largest exporter and the US’s largest trading partner mean that its position within the International market is extremely strong. Therefore, embarking upon a German degree course is a great investment for you and your future.

If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time. Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. If the tutor fails to do this then please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

    A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.

    A

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

Yes, we do take a fee, but at a fraction of the rate which other companies charge. We don’t have a sign up fee for new customers, we don’t charge an introduction fee, and we don’t charge administration fees. However, we do charge a small commission which pays for the security of tutors (we meet all tutors, check their DBS certificates and ensure they are who they say there are), and the maintenance of the site. If you have any problems using the site, you can always email or call us.

The messaging is instant, so your tutor will receive the notification via both; the website and email. Hence he or she can respond to immediately. You may wish to discuss your preferred lesson time and date, or discuss which exam board you’re studying for A-levels and GCSE’s, or even to discuss specific text and books which you are currently studying. Also, You can communicate with the tutor with the instant in-app messaging at any point (before or after the booking has been made). Please note that it is possible for you and the tutor to mutually agree to booking changes after this stage. This must be done within the messenger app on the website. You can also use the same means of comunication to find out more about the tutor, after you have requested a booking. In addition to this you can always check the tutors reviews and ranking.

    A

    A
