My name is Nayim, I am 23 and live in South London, and I work as both a professional tutor and also a teacher in North London. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 2016 and graduated with a MSc from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Astrophysics and Cosmology in 2018. My professional experience with tutoring began while studying at the University of Cambridge as I partially supported myself through tutoring A-level students in the city and also helping my fellow colleagues in my course. After graduating, I spent a year in Berlin working and volunteering with groups that were in need of people with mathematics and science skills, and it was here that I started to tutor full-time as I fully supported myself through teaching students Mathematics and Physics, mainly at IB, A-level and University level. I also continued full-time tutoring while in Barcelona for a year completing my masters. My students during these two years ranged from ages 12 to 29, while primarily being in 14 to 19 age range. During these two years, I was responsible for: liaising with both prospective students and their parents; coordinating lessons and devising tailored lesson plans for my students based on their abilities and curricula; bridging the gaps between my knowledge of courses in the UK and the courses being taught in Europe; understanding how best to engage and teach my students while also tracking their progress to ensure that they were best prepared for their exams. My hopes for now are to further my teaching abilities and experience while also pursuing my own writing and research interests, so as to become a more full teacher, learner and human.

I personally love to explore things; helping others to learn rather than making them remember. I usually solve any logical problem and explain it clearly. Experience came from the exams, where i used to explain to my friends before the exams. However we do get good results. I only want to make myself challenging and keep myself to a limit where i can enjoy the work and coming up with satisfying output.

I am currently in the second year of my PhD in pure mathematics at the London School of Geometry and Number Theory (Imperial, UCL, and King's). Before that, I was an undergraduate at the University of Queensland, Australia, where I earned a Bachelor of Science with Honours Class I with an extended major in Mathematics. I also have a Diploma of Languages majoring in German, and spent a year of my undergraduate degree studying in Munich. As an undergraduate, I gained a variety of experience from both private tutoring and teaching in university environments for students ranging from high school to undergraduate level. Before I began university I did a gap year working for a prep school in Surrey, where I primarily helped students between the ages of 8 and 13 who were struggling in class and/ or being disruptive. I also helped prepare students for the 11 and 13+ exams. I believe that mathematics is an under-appreciated discipline, and I have a passion for teaching maths in an intuitive and relatable way that applies real-world examples. I have ample experience in communicating complicated ideas to students of all abilities and in guiding students to their own understanding.

General information about studying Spanish at University

Whilst the course specifications vary depending on the University, most Spanish degrees will use the first year of study in order to give students a broad grounding in the topic, equipping students with an overview of the Spanish language and culture whilst ensuring they have cultivated the necessary Spanish speaking skills required to excel in the subsequent stages of the course. The course will generally focus on combining the acquisition and consolidation of proficiency in speaking, writing and reading in Spanish.

The latter years of study will focus on more specific topics, offering a range of optional modules alongside core modules that will equip students with an in-depth understanding of Spanish, Latin American and Hispanic culture and society. Whilst, of course, module specifics will vary depending on the course, students can expect to choose from a range of options, including variations of the following:

  • Spanish Civil War
  • Hispanic and Lusophone cinema
  • Contemporary Spanish Culture
  • Spanish Politics
  • Hispanic Society
  • Language and Identity in Spain
  • Society on Screen: the Language of Film

Students will also take compulsory modules that focus on continuing to improve their writing, reading and speaking language skills. Assessments for the course will vary, ranging from subject-specific essays to translations, essays and written and oral exams. Students will also be expected to demonstrate strong research abilities and be able to show that they can learn independently.

Most Spanish courses also integrate a year of studying abroad, during which students will spend time attending a Spanish University and interact with native Spanish speakers. Students will be expected fully immerse themselves in Spanish society and culture, developing their knowledge about Spanish culture and the Spanish political system. This year abroad is imperative in terms of improving a students language skills, with many students finding this to be the time where they really cement their speaking abilities into place.

Benefits of Studying Spanish at University

Through completing a Spanish degree, students will gain the knowledge and skill set to embark upon a range of exciting career options, both at home and overseas. Upon course completion, graduates will also have developed a wide range of transferable skills applicable to life both inside and outside of the workplace.

Skills - Studying Spanish is hugely beneficial, equipping students with an array of highly coveted transferrable, academic and practical skills. Amongst the most obvious skills obtained from successfully achieving a Spanish degree are the practical language abilities, with most students exiting the learning process with the ability to communicate fluently in Spanish. Not only will students be able to interact spontaneously with other Spanish speakers but they will also be able to construct and communicate a coherent argument in the language. This is sure to set them apart in interviews and in the workplace, with multilinguality perceived as a highly impressive and incredibly useful skill for businesses in the UK and internationally.

Aside from the practical Spanish language skills gained through studying Spanish at this advanced level, students will also have fostered several transferable skills that will prove hugely beneficial, both inside and outside of the workplace. Students will cultivate important research and analytical skills, such as being able to conduct effective independent research and respond to material from an interrogative viewpoint. The course will also strengthen students’ written and oral communication skills in both of their languages. The complex material and rigorous syllabus of a Spanish degree means that students will also graduate with strong time management and organisational skills, both of which are imperative and will ensure they are successful in their respective future careers.
Beyond university - Students who graduate with a degree in Modern Language have huge career prospects, with jobs in a number of industries deeming Spanish proficiency to be a highly desirable and useful skill. Moreover, the transferable skills attained during the University experience will assist in students pursuing successful careers in fields across the board. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, proficiency in Spanish will also help students to gain a competitive edge in the international job market, both in the public and private sectors. Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.
