My degree a B.Sc. in Maths, with Psychology as a subsidiary (Leicester University). I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (University of London Institute of Education).
After graduating, I worked part-time at Barnet College of Technology teaching various classes from numeracy to A-Level.
My main experience is in teaching one-to-one, which I have been doing since I was an undergraduate in the 1980s, and so I have had many years to hone a style which must be adapted to suit the many different students. I am always wary of trying to push students too hard and l would rather do a limited amount that they understand properly than overwhelm them trying to cover the whole syllabus. Of course they want to do well in the exam and so we may need to talk about things like the grade they are likely to achieve, how much they are willing/able to do and whether it is worth the effort.
I was with another agency until they recently folded and it was through them that I attended a course in July 2016 (14 GBAM01): Getting Ready to Teach Pearson's new GCSE (9-1) Mathematics specification from 2015.
When I joined the agency in 2013, they sent a form to my referee, Dr Iqbal, which he kindly completed and sent to me to be used as a testimonial:

Re: Reference for Mr Nick FENTON (Maths)
The above named person has applied to this agency to work as a private tutor, at the pupil's home or at the tutor's home, and has given your name as a referee. Please could you answer the following questions in confidence and send back this e-mail.
1. Do you consider the applicant suitable to work as a private tutor?
Yes, we can confidently recommend Nick as a very good maths tutor. He started with our eldest son about 2009 tutoring him for GCSE (grade A*) and subsequently A level (grade A). Then Nick tutored our middle son who also achieved GCSE grade A* and A level grade A. Finally, our youngest son was coached for GCSE maths and achieved A* and at A level maths grade A. Nick is punctual and always very courteous. On many occasions, he spends longer than the scheduled time.
Dr Annum Iqbal
Below is a testimonial from the mother of a son and daughter whom I taught from 2007 to 2012:
My two children have been tutored by Nick since year 10 till the end of A-Level
Both of them achieved A* in maths and further maths.
Also, they like his teaching style.
Finally, my hobbies at present include tennis, Modern Greek and old cars.
