I am currently a physics undergraduate at Warwick University. I have previously tutored at a local community centre where I would tutor students over a 5 week period on a specific topic so at the end of the sessions they were confident in that area. Similarly , i tutored in my high school, providing extra support to students who struggled in science and maths . Having struggled with maths and physics when i was younger , I know how to help students approach these subjects to make them less daunting and more enjoyable, hence i think i am an ideal candidate to tutor students in these subjects .

I've taught and tutored mathematics for 23 years now. In my career I have been mathematics teacher, subject leader and consultant so I have an in-depth knowledge of the school curriculum, the requirements of each of the exam boards and have a range of teaching strategies to meet the needs of all learners. I tutor students from all school year groups as well as adults. In particular I support students with 11 plus, end of Key Stage 2, entrance exams, GCSE, Functional Skills and A Level. I am familiar with the content of all exam boards. I am also happy to teach work related exam content as long as I am given the relevant information beforehand. Before working with a student I like to know about their aims, relevant learning needs and prior learning information. How I teach is decided by how my student learns. The topic to be taught is chosen by the student beforehand or by my assessing them. Typically I ask the student to explain what they know in the topic so far and help them to learn any gaps or misconceptions in learning. I then model the next step before giving them questions on the topic which become progressively harder bringing in reasoning and problem solving to ensure mastery. I like then to quiz at them end or the beginning of the next session to check understanding. I welcome questions at all times and will adapt what I am doing at any time to ensure learning is taking place. When preparing students for exams I use exam papers from the relevant exam board.

Breakdown of A-Level English modules

The current A-level English course is strongly exam based, with some of the exam boards omitting coursework entirely for either English Language, English literature or both. While different exam boards have slight variations in courses and materials, there are a number of commonalities between A-level English Literature and A-level English Language courses that exist across exam boards.

A-Level English Literature

In the English literature A-level, students will be expected to study some Shakespearean works, some poetry, and texts from within either a specific time period (such as post 19th century) or a specific genre (such as gothic literature). The exams and any coursework will focus on assessing a students ability to understand, analyse and compare texts, with some exam boards offering a chance for students to explore creative writing in a similar style to the texts they have studied. Tutor House tutors are qualified and experienced in teaching A-Level English Literature for all the main exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC. Tutors are experts on the A-level texts and helping students to develop the analytical, interpretation and writing skills needed to obtain top grades.

A-Level English Language

In the English language A-level, students are expected to demonstrate understanding and use of various methods of language analysis while exploring English language in a variety of contexts. Although the specific texts and sources differ across exam boards, all English A-level courses include study of children’s language development, how English language is used by different forces such as the media, the diversity and change of the English language, and different language discourses. While each exam board has created a unique syllabus, the primary themes remain the same. All Tutor House A-level English Language tutors are experienced in teaching the materials from all the major UK exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC. With a private English Language tutor, you can master the skills required to get the best grade possible for this critical A-level.

Literature is one of the most interesting and significant expressions of humanity - P. T. Barnum

Why is it worth studying English at A-Level?

A-Level English courses are both challenging and rewarding. The syllabus requires students to engage with a number of texts and discourses that vary greatly in form and content, teaching them to develop critical and creative thinking as well as improving their writing ability across forms. While A-level English Language and English Literature certainly build on the methods and theories explored at GCSE level, the A-level course introduces more complex texts as well as nuanced ideas and theories that will push students to approach reading and writing in new, more detailed and more layered ways. The skills students will acquire during their A-level English course, such as analytical thinking, excellent written and oral communication and creativity, are sought out not just by universities but by employers too. As a result, studying English at A-level is a sound investment of your time and effort regardless of your higher education goals.

Successfully studying English at A-Level can lead to a place on an English degree course at some top universities, which fairly poses the question “why should you do an English degree?”. Studying English at degree level requires graduates to develop a number of critical skills that are highly attractive to employers, including analytical thinking, creativity, excellent written and oral communication and fantastic research skills. By completing an English degree you make yourself a prime candidate for roles in a number of professions.

Tutoring FAQs

A

Once you have made the lesson request, you can communicate with the tutor. You can discuss your tuition requirements and the lesson timing with in-app instant messaging. The messaging is instant, so your tutor will receive the notification via both; the website and email. Hence he or she can respond to immediately. You may wish to discuss your preferred lesson time and date, or discuss which exam board you’re studying for A-levels and GCSE’s, or even to discuss specific text and books which you are currently studying. Also, You can communicate with the tutor with the instant in-app messaging at any point (before or after the booking has been made). Please note that it is possible for you and the tutor to mutually agree to booking changes after this stage. This must be done within the messenger app on the website. You can also use the same means of comunication to find out more about the tutor, after you have requested a booking. In addition to this you can always check the tutors reviews and ranking.

A

Yes, we do take a fee, but at a fraction of the rate which other companies charge. We don’t have a sign up fee for new customers, we don’t charge an introduction fee, and we don’t charge administration fees. However, we do charge a small commission which pays for the security of tutors (we meet all tutors, check their DBS certificates and ensure they are who they say there are), and the maintenance of the site. If you have any problems using the site, you can always email or call us.

A

Yes, we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy. Our policy protects both tutor and customer. You can cancel your booking without incurring any charges as long as it’s cancelled at least 48 hours before the lesson is due to take place. However, if you cancel your lesson within 48 hours you will be charged the full amount. If there is an unforeseen circumstance, then both the tutor and Tutor House will discuss this with you. In some situations lessons can be rescheduled (free of charge), but this is at the tutor’s discretion.

A

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

A

While you think it is faster it elevates your risk and you use lose all the benefits of Tutor House policies. Paying the tutor directly is NOT secure nor protected. If you do pay a tutor outside of the Tutor House website you will not be protected by our 48 Hour Cancelation Policy, our Disputes Policy or our Refund Policy. We also can not protect you from fraud or spam accounts. Before messaging a tutor you are required to sign our Terms and Conditions. Any loss of earning would be considered a legal matter. Tutor House is designed to introduce excellent tutors to customers putting tutors in touch with students and learners. We help and support students to get the best out of their learning experience. If you use the Tutor House website you must complete all bookings within the online platform, including the arrangement of any other services provided by tutors for clients. If you make any arrangement with a tutor that you were introduced to through Tutor House, outside the online platform, either for tuition or payment, you will have broken our terms and conditions. In this case, neither the tutor or customer (parent or student) will be protected or covered, as mentioned above. For more information about payment please refer to our terms and conditions.

A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.

A

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

A

Finding a tutor with Tutor House is fast, simple, and secure. Our online tutoring platform helps you find, message and book tutors within a few clicks. Simply enter your required subject with the level and your location, and our website will return a list of recommended tutors. You can then filter these tutors according to experience, price, and recommendation. Each tutor has a detailed profile with a personal statement and details about their qualifications and teaching experience.

A

Tutor House endeavours to ensure that both tutors and clients have the best possible experience with our service. We’re always here to help, so do reach out and contact us. If you ever have unresolved disputes with your tutor we will assist you in reaching a mutual agreement. We will do our utmost to try and resolve all disputes; however we may not be in a position to resolve every dispute. Please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

A

If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time. Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. If the tutor fails to do this then please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.
