I am a fully qualified teacher with extensive knowledge of the British curriculum! I'm approachable, fun and passionate about teaching. I have recently spent a year teaching English as a foreign language in Thailand (both children and adults!) This was an incredibly exciting experience. I love travelling, reading and meeting new people! I taught English and maths on a daily basis to a class of 30 students through a range of interactive, well- planned and effectively delivered lessons! A typical day would see me teaching all of the subjects in the curriculum but my main focus was on English (grammar, punctuation, creative writing, reading skills) and also primary maths. I gained a wealth of experience in teaching and prepping for government exams and many of my students exceeded expectations for their year group. Additionally, I had a lot of experience in assessments and target setting to ensure my students did the best they could do. I had frequent observations which were always judged 'good' and 'outstanding'. As well as being a class teacher, I have also tutored children 1:1 (ages 6 - 15) focusing on phonics, grammar, creative writing and exam preparation for SATs, GCSEs and A- Levels. My GCSE student was expected to achieve a D in English but achieved a B after tailored tuition. Currently I am tutoring students for their 11+ and entrance exams and their parents are very happy with the progress so far! One of the students was not initially enthused by English, but I love the challenge of making English exciting for the student through the use of film and creative games. After 4 weeks, his enthusiasm and confidence is definitely increasing! I look forward to meeting you! I can provide references, teaching certificates and an up to date police check.
I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at UCL and work as a Trainee Clinical Psychologist in the NHS. I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Education at McGill University, Canada. I specialized in developmental psychology during my MSc. Studies at the Anna Freud Center, UCL. Over the course of my academic, clinical and professional careers, I tutored undergraduate students with their prerequisite psychology courses (Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, Behavioural Neuroscience, Perception, Cognition). I have multiple years of experience working with hard-to-reach, hard-to-engage students in different complex settings. I am an experienced IB tutor in psychology and TOK. In addition, I mentor students with their university applications and personal statements (UCAS, Canadian & US applications). I believe in open, encouraging and attuned teaching. My basic tutoring approaches are to guide students to discover what type of learning style works for them; gain lots of feedback and tailor the sessions to suit the learning needs of students; combine multiple visual and creative strategies to encourage learning. I love to practice mindfulness and encourage all my students to use mindfulness strategies to deal with the different stressors in their lives. I am also a big fan of spoken word poetry.
I have been tutoring on a one-to-one basis is Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire for the last five years, having tutored in London. Many of my pupils have jumped several grades after working with me, which is a very rewarding feeling! It is often the case that young people (particularly when they choose English literature for A-level) believe that English is somehow a “soft” subject, and then start to worry when they realise just how demanding it really is. Certainly certain texts, particularly Shakespeare, can seem intimidating, almost like a foreign language. But this is often down to the teachers not making the subject interesting, not because of the subject itself. What I try to do is make the experience of learning as entertaining and compelling as the subject deserves. As well as teaching, I have worked as an actor (including at the Royal Shakespeare Company), and have led post-performance discussions about the text and the writer’s intentions. After all, if the lessons aren’t engaging, then pupils won’t be engaged: it’s as simple as that.
