Hi, I'm Iliana. I am a First-Class Honours graduate from the University of Leeds with a passion for English, music and languages. I am looking to pursue a lifelong career in education and childcare, and I wish to dedicate myself to working for equal education for all. I would be very excited to share my love for literature and language with children from all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. I currently work as a teacher at a charity-run school based in Tower Hamlets, which provides education for children who are unable to access mainstream schooling, for reasons such as mental illness or special educational needs. Here, I teach the KS3 and GCSE English national curriculum to children with a range of levels of need, and have particular experience in working with children with autism and severe anxiety. In addition to this, I also have previous experience of teaching and tutoring a variety of subjects to all ages across the globe. During my year abroad in Moscow, I taught English as a foreign language privately to Russian children aged 3 to 11. I have also participated in the 'Generation UK-India' Project, working as a public speaking and theater teacher at a secondary school in India, and even organised a production of 'Annie!' the musical! In my spare time I like to play violin and piano. I have also worked as a piano teacher, and loved arranging concerts and recitals for my pupils (and providing baked goods for afterwards - my speciality is gooey chocolate caramel brownies!) Approach: I strongly believe in the power of positive reinforcement, and I aim for my sessions to be as reassuring and encouraging as possible. I ensure that my lessons are highly engaging, and take an active learning approach by preparing a variety of activities which help students to apply their knowledge and develop their communication and comprehension skills. I am also flexible, and make sure that each session is adapted to meet each individual student's needs. I understand that school can be a daunting time for a lot of young learners. Therefore, I aim to provide stress-free sessions which equip each pupil with the confidence they need to feel motivated to reach their full potential.
I am a first year undergraduate at the University of Oxford studying Mathematics and Philosophy with A*A*A*A at A-level in Maths, Further Maths, Ancient Greek and Physics as well as a 1 in STEP 2 and 11 A*s at GCSE. During my last year at school, I tutored pupils from the local area as well as fellow students at my school which I really enjoyed. One of the pupils who I tutored subsequently got into Hampton School at 10+. As someone who is closer in age to my tutees, I am able to develop a connection with students and thereby better approach their learning. Tutoring for me is immensely enjoyable and rewarding. Away from academic studies I also have a keen interest in music and drama - I play the piano, trumpet and guitar and regularly get involved with plays.
Information about you and your tutoring experience I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with thirty years experience in practice, both in the NHS and private practice. I was in CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health service) for seven years and so am used to working with young people. I taught A-level (many years ago) and undergraduate psychology modules at Sunderland University in the '90's and have been tutoring undergraduate psychology modules with the Open University for ten years. This is done mainly online with some face-to-face tutorials also. I have two grown-up stepsons who I have had the pleasure of knowing since they were five and four years old.
