I am a second year PhD student in the Control System group at the University Of Manchester. I graduated with a first class in Computer Engineering (undergraduate degree) and a distinction in Advanced Control and System Engineering (MSc). I currently work as a graduate teaching assistant (GTA) in addition to my research work at the University of Manchester. I have been a GTA for two years now. I have worked as a lab assistant after my undergraduate studies where I help students with problems they may encounter during the lab sessions. I also worked as a volunteer for a charity to teach less privileged children mathematics and to enthuse them to take up STEM subjects. I am a person that is very patient with people and as such, I take my time to make sure students understand what I teach. I try to understand the strength and weakness of my students and help them to improve on both.

I'm an experienced science and language tutor with more than 10 years of teaching. SPANISH I have studied Spanish for over 10 years and obtained the highest certificate in Spanish as Foreign Language (DELE) with distinction. I was awarded first prize in many Spanish international competitions. For four years, I did courses in Spanish geography, history and culture, and I normally use what I learned to make my classes interactive and more than a way of teaching a language. I like immersing people in the Spanish culture, with its food, dances, famous painters and explorers. Have taught Spanish as foreign language for more than ten years, in one-to-one and one-to-few sessions. I adapt my style to the students I work with - for one, it can be all about having fun while translating lyrics of famous songs and watching Spanish short films (audio, experiential learners); for another it can be about rigorously tackling grammar and crafting complex stories. Regardless of the approach, you should expect that after a year of weekly/fortnightly classes you would advance by two levels (e.g. A2 to B2). I wholeheartedly recommend trying learning a language from a non-native speaker, as the way a foreign language is learned is very different from a native tongue. If you speak foreign languages, you know what I mean. If not, just give it a go! SCIENCES I'm doing a PhD in Biology at the University of Oxford and have taught both within the university and in private summer schools in Oxford on the topic. I teach both high school students who need help preparing for exams, as well as university students who want to go in-depth within a certain subject or understand course material. My methods focus on applied learning, which means I'll help you understand why it is important to learn something and what you can do with that knowledge, not just how to learn. My teaching method for A-level students focuses on problem-based learning similar to university admissions interviews. I am comfortable teaching younger students in a variety of science subjects, including students with learning difficulties. You can expect a very fun, hands-on approach to learning.

I am an experienced professional tutor with a First class Bachelor's degree in Physics and Philosophy from the University of Bristol. I am going on to study a Masters in History and Philosophy of Science either at Cambridge or the LSE (I haven't yet decided!) This interdisciplinarity commits me to well-informed, creative and self-generated ways of thought which I encourage in all my pupils. I have been a professional tutor for 6 years and besides tutoring my primary subjects of Natural Sciences, Maths and Philosophy I have given guidance with academic confidence, writing skills and exam technique. I am very comfortable with all syllabuses and am aware of the examiners expectations and motivations for the new style exams. Every one of my students has excelled and received A*/A grades at GCSE and A-level. I have a conversational style, part lesson and part problem solving. I pay lots of attention to how pupils engage with and work with specific problems. This allows me to simultaneously understand gaps in knowledge as well as technical and analytical reasoning. I am expert in helping students with formulating their thoughts and pushing themselves to be creative in how they handle the knowledge they take from school. By helping pupils explore how they learn they become comfortably able to present their knowledge with clarity- essential in both real life and exam settings. Most recently I was employed to deliver science lesson plans to a group of year 7 and 8 students of mixed ability from minority backgrounds. I instructed groups of 15 students and learnt a huge amount of techniques to garner respect and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning. I made an effort to incorporate interesting subject matter that connected obscure scientific topics to the world around them and gave them a taste of the activities and concepts encountered at graduate level studies. I left this job because I moved from Bristol to London. As part of my degree, I mentored a group of five fifteen year old children from Pakistan. Over the course of 6 weeks we developed comfortable bonds and were able to discuss Schrodingers cat as well as special relativity, accessed through a brief history of our conception of space. I was awarded the highest mark in the group for my efforts. The powerful dynamics of small groups brought to light the dangers of large class sizes where students are easily made to feel like unworthy contributors. "Samar was an excellent tutor to my sister, Andrea, through her A-levels. Andrea had chosen Physics and Maths out of a passion for the subjects but was held back by inadequate teaching in her GCSE’s. This meant that she was in need of a supervisor that could identify where the gaps in her knowledge were so that she could receive training for the tools she needed. Samar was instrumental in building knowledge and confidence so that Andrea could expertly grasp the topics and achieve A* grades. As soon as he started tutoring, Andrea related to us that Samar had helped her understand her weaknesses and shown her how to improve." -- Jemal, parent.

Tutoring FAQs

A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.

A

If you make any arrangement with a tutor that you were introduced to through Tutor House, outside the online platform, either for tuition or payment, you will have broken our terms and conditions. In this case, neither the tutor or customer (parent or student) will be protected or covered, as mentioned above. For more information about payment please refer to our terms and conditions.

A

Yes, we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy. Our policy protects both tutor and customer. You can cancel your booking without incurring any charges as long as it’s cancelled at least 48 hours before the lesson is due to take place. However, if you cancel your lesson within 48 hours you will be charged the full amount. If there is an unforeseen circumstance, then both the tutor and Tutor House will discuss this with you. In some situations lessons can be rescheduled (free of charge), but this is at the tutor’s discretion.

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

A

Send an inquiry to your selected Tutor and once a tutor accepts your inquiry, it will be registered as an ‘open enquiry’ within your messages tab. This is where you will be able to communicate with our tutors, discuss your requirements, arrange lesson times, and book and pay for lessons. When you submit your booking request, the credit card details provided will be subject to an authorisation hold (to the total amount agreed with the tutor for the cost of the initial session and for any other lessons which will take place thereafter). Not only that, but you can also rate and review your tutor once you’ve had your lesson! Tutor House values your feedback.

A

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.
