I've taught and tutored mathematics for 23 years now. In my career I have been mathematics teacher, subject leader and consultant so I have an in-depth knowledge of the school curriculum, the requirements of each of the exam boards and have a range of teaching strategies to meet the needs of all learners. I tutor students from all school year groups as well as adults. In particular I support students with 11 plus, end of Key Stage 2, entrance exams, GCSE, Functional Skills and A Level. I am familiar with the content of all exam boards. I am also happy to teach work related exam content as long as I am given the relevant information beforehand. Before working with a student I like to know about their aims, relevant learning needs and prior learning information. How I teach is decided by how my student learns. The topic to be taught is chosen by the student beforehand or by my assessing them. Typically I ask the student to explain what they know in the topic so far and help them to learn any gaps or misconceptions in learning. I then model the next step before giving them questions on the topic which become progressively harder bringing in reasoning and problem solving to ensure mastery. I like then to quiz at them end or the beginning of the next session to check understanding. I welcome questions at all times and will adapt what I am doing at any time to ensure learning is taking place. When preparing students for exams I use exam papers from the relevant exam board.

I have taught for very many years. Now retired from the Finance/Investment profession, I write fiction for children and young adults. Teaching has always been part of my life - for my children and those of some friends. Also, I have been in formal tutoring for over 5 years, covering primary, secondary and some university students. I appreciated the privilege of success with many, including a determined but dyslexic young learner. One of my starting principles is that learning need NOT be terrifying. Even Algebra can be fun! The Student's mindset and experience are always key: I try to support the approach of the school (especially with Primary and Secondary) to avoid confusion for the learner. However, in the effort to lead the student to realise that nothing is impossible, I try to explore confidence-boosting steps! Practical examples are always critical, for example, past papers, of course. Or possibly, where necessary, a ‘mini role-play’ of sections in a play for the sake of realism, the student’s self-immersion and encouragement.

General information about studying Geography at University

Geography is an immensely broad subject covering, literally, the whole world; from the physical environment to the humans that inhabit it. Understandably, this means that Geography courses tend to specialise, with courses varying considerably between different Universities. Some University courses will offer either a BA Geography course (focusing on the human and social elements) or BSc Geography course (focusing on the physical and environmental elements). Other Universities offer both courses separately, while some, such as Oxford University, run a combined Human and Physical Geography course. Those Universities offering a combined course or running both BA and BSc degree courses will often give students a combination of Human and Physical Geography modules in their first year before allowing them to specialise in the field that most interests them.

While it is important for students to carefully read the course specification of their chosen University, there are a number of topics that feature in the majority of University Geography syllabuses. A few of the potential modules students may choose in a Geography degree include:

Physical Geography (BSc) modules such as...

  • Research skills and techniques in geosciences
  • Physical environments
  • Analysing geographical and environmental data
  • Earth systems
  • Global climate systems
  • Climatology (the forming of different climates)
  • Biogeography and soils
  • Fluvial and marine environments

Human Geography (BA) modules such as

  • Globalisation and Global challenges
  • Historical cultural geographies
  • Theory, space and society
  • Urbanism, culture and modernity
  • Citizenship and Identity
  • Environment and development
  • Environment and society

Combined Human and Physical Geography modules such as:

  • Human activity and environmental change
  • Statistics
  • Geographical Information Systems

Geography courses are diverse not just in their subject matter but also in the style of teaching and assessment methods. The course is taught via a combination of lectures, field trips, one-on-one tutorials, seminars, workshops and laboratory sessions. Contact time is relatively low with most courses having a maximum of 10 hours per week. As a result, the support of a private tutor to fill in gaps in a students knowledge and support their learning is particularly valuable.

While Universities do vary, Geography degrees tend to have varied and creative means of assessment in addition to the standard module-specific essays and written exams. In addition to these staples, students may find they are required to produce podcasts, give presentations, create posters or undertake any number of fieldwork and research projects both independently and as part of a team. University Geography students must therefore develop a huge variety of skills in addition to both breadth and depth of knowledge. Success in a Geography is inherently challenging, but equally rewarding and sets them up as unique and highly attractive candidates for careers in a range of industries. Working with a private tutor is the best way to ensure students are able to meet all the course requirements and emerge as rounded, skilled and confident graduates.

Benefits of Studying Geography at University

    Tutoring FAQs

    A

Finding a tutor with Tutor House is fast, simple, and secure. Our online tutoring platform helps you find, message and book tutors within a few clicks. Simply enter your required subject with the level and your location, and our website will return a list of recommended tutors. You can then filter these tutors according to experience, price, and recommendation. Each tutor has a detailed profile with a personal statement and details about their qualifications and teaching experience.

    A

By default, when searching for a tutor you will be shown the nearest tutors to your location. Travelling longer distances may incur additional travel costs; however the tutor will inform you if this is the case, and any travel costs can be mutually agreed before the lesson is booked. Most tutors would expect to travel up to 45 minutes to get you, at no extra cost. If there are additional charges the tutor will make you aware of that. You can always ask the tutor for online lessons if there is the possibility of travel costs being added to the costs of your lessons. Most of our Tutors infact use Skype and can carry out lessons online with no additional cost. Sometimes online courses is the perfect answer.

    A

Booking and paying for private tuition has never been easier! As a customer, you’ll need to add your credit or debt card details to your profile after you sign in. You pay the tutor online using a debit or credit card, with your booking being secure and private. Our tutors get paid on the same day of the lesson, so please make sure that you’ve confirmed the lesson before your tutor arrives. Of course! We use Stripe as our third party payment platform. Stripe are PCI compliant, so you’re protected from fraud, and can we issued refunds without any cost to you. (But only if you pay through the website, please see our terms).

    A

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

    A

Yes, we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy. Our policy protects both tutor and customer. You can cancel your booking without incurring any charges as long as it’s cancelled at least 48 hours before the lesson is due to take place. However, if you cancel your lesson within 48 hours you will be charged the full amount. If there is an unforeseen circumstance, then both the tutor and Tutor House will discuss this with you. In some situations lessons can be rescheduled (free of charge), but this is at the tutor’s discretion.

    A

If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time. Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. If the tutor fails to do this then please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

    A

Once you have made the lesson request, you can communicate with the tutor. You can discuss your tuition requirements and the lesson timing with in-app instant messaging. The messaging is instant, so your tutor will receive the notification via both; the website and email. Hence he or she can respond to immediately. You may wish to discuss your preferred lesson time and date, or discuss which exam board you’re studying for A-levels and GCSE’s, or even to discuss specific text and books which you are currently studying. Also, You can communicate with the tutor with the instant in-app messaging at any point (before or after the booking has been made). Please note that it is possible for you and the tutor to mutually agree to booking changes after this stage. This must be done within the messenger app on the website. You can also use the same means of comunication to find out more about the tutor, after you have requested a booking. In addition to this you can always check the tutors reviews and ranking.

    A

After selecting your tutor for your desired material, you can book a lesson right away! Send an inquiry to your selected Tutor and once a tutor accepts your inquiry, it will be registered as an ‘open enquiry’ within your messages tab. This is where you will be able to communicate with our tutors, discuss your requirements, arrange lesson times, and book and pay for lessons. When you submit your booking request, the credit card details provided will be subject to an authorisation hold (to the total amount agreed with the tutor for the cost of the initial session and for any other lessons which will take place thereafter). Not only that, but you can also rate and review your tutor once you’ve had your lesson! Tutor House values your feedback.

    A

Yes, we do take a fee, but at a fraction of the rate which other companies charge. We don’t have a sign up fee for new customers, we don’t charge an introduction fee, and we don’t charge administration fees. However, we do charge a small commission which pays for the security of tutors (we meet all tutors, check their DBS certificates and ensure they are who they say there are), and the maintenance of the site. If you have any problems using the site, you can always email or call us.

    A

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.
