My name is Nayim, I am 23 and live in South London, and I work as both a professional tutor and also a teacher in North London. I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 2016 and graduated with a MSc from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Astrophysics and Cosmology in 2018. My professional experience with tutoring began while studying at the University of Cambridge as I partially supported myself through tutoring A-level students in the city and also helping my fellow colleagues in my course. After graduating, I spent a year in Berlin working and volunteering with groups that were in need of people with mathematics and science skills, and it was here that I started to tutor full-time as I fully supported myself through teaching students Mathematics and Physics, mainly at IB, A-level and University level. I also continued full-time tutoring while in Barcelona for a year completing my masters. My students during these two years ranged from ages 12 to 29, while primarily being in 14 to 19 age range. During these two years, I was responsible for: liaising with both prospective students and their parents; coordinating lessons and devising tailored lesson plans for my students based on their abilities and curricula; bridging the gaps between my knowledge of courses in the UK and the courses being taught in Europe; understanding how best to engage and teach my students while also tracking their progress to ensure that they were best prepared for their exams. My hopes for now are to further my teaching abilities and experience while also pursuing my own writing and research interests, so as to become a more full teacher, learner and human.

I have a degree in Engineering Mathematics, and I have worked with teaching for 20 years. I have experience as a kinder garden teacher, primary school teacher and I have tutored at university while I was a student. I am currently a home school mom and arrange STEM workshops for home schoolers. My tutoring experience at university have included helping students who had failed their exams in Advanced Calculus several times get the equivalent of a B/C on the ECTS scale. I have also helped students who were about to drop out of graduate classes, because they were too hard, understand the subject matter and pass with a B on the ECTS scale. I am currently homeschooling my own children aged 9 and 12, and teaching them in all subjects, my son is studying for GCSEs in Maths, English and Biology . I have arranged hands on workshops for home schooled children in various STEM fields - maths, physics, chemistry and programming. I am currently arranging workshops in logic and geometry. I am very patient and believe that establishing a good report with the student is paramount to learning. I believe in finding ways to make the subject matter relevant to the student is motivating. I have training in non-violent communication.

What is the difference between Pre-U and A-Level?

Unlike traditional A-levels, Pre-U Geography is specifically designed to prepare students for the challenges of University study. The Pre-U course ensures that students develop the skills and knowledge fundamental to success on a University course, whether Geography based or otherwise. Students are expected to undertake a considerable amount of independent study, including practical research and further reading. Equally, the content of the course will cover a breadth and depth of both Physical and Human Geography topics reflective of University Geography courses. In order to succeed in the Pre-U course, Geography students will need to develop sophisticated analytical skills and demonstrate their appreciation of how different features and process in Geographical study intertwine. These skills will all prove vital for students who go on to study Geography at degree level.

The Pre-U Geography curriculum is divided into four areas of study: Global Environments; Global Themes; Geographical Issues; and a Research Topic. Each of these components is assessed at the end of the Pre-U course via four written exams.

Global Environments - This module focuses on 6 types of physical environment: coastal environments; Hot-arid and Semi-arid environments; Glacial and Periglacial environments; Atmospheric environments; Temperate environments and Tropical environments. Students will need to develop their knowledge of the physical factors and processes operating in each environment in addition to how these aspects affect and are affected by human activity. Students will also need to cultivate an appreciation of different approaches to sustainability in each of these environments, their benefits and their drawbacks. The module expects students to develop a good understanding of the interrelationship between both the physical and the human aspects of each environments.

This topic area will be assessed by Paper 1 of the four Geography exam papers. Students will have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete both structured questions and extended writing questions on two of the environments they have studied. Students will select questions from choices presented in the exam paper. The paper is externally assessed and worth a maximum of 50 marks or 20% of the final grade.
Global Themes - This topic considers Human Activity and Human Issues across the globe. The specific modules of study consist of: Migration and Urban Change; People, places and conflicts; Trade, debt and Aid; The Provision of food; Energy and mineral resources; and Tourism Spaces. Students will need to develop an understanding of issues within these global themes at a range of different scales, as well as knowing how the issues arose, have developed, and how they are or could be managed.

How well students understand this area is assessed in Paper 2 where students must select and answer extended essay questions based on two of the topics they have studied. While primarily focused on areas of Human Geography, students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of how physical processes affect human populations and vice versa. Students have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the paper which is worth 50 marks, 20% of the overall grade.
Geographical Issues - This area of study considers a range of both Physical and Human Geographical issues that pose a threat to human life, well-being and activity. The specific areas covered are: Tectonic hazards; Hydrological hazards; Meteorological hazards; Health issues; Crime issues; Spatial inequality and poverty issues.

Students’ understanding of these topics is assessed in exam Paper 3. Students will need to demonstrate their knowledge of the causes, impact and managements of these Geographical threats referencing how both the human and physical environments affect and are affected by them. Successful answers will acknowledge a range of different viewpoints on the issues and how opinions and reactions vary across different places, times and populations.

Paper 3 is longer, giving students 2 hours and 45 minutes to respond to four structured questions and one extended essay question. Students will be able to select questions from a range of choices but must answer questions on both Physical and Human Geographical Hazards. The paper gives students the opportunity to write extensively on more than one of the issues, providing an excellent opportunity for them to demonstrate their awareness of the interconnected nature of Global issues. As with the other papers, students must demonstrate their appreciation of how Physical and Human Geography are inherently connected and influence each other. There are 105 marks available in Paper 3 making up 40% of the total grade.
Research Topic - During their Pre-U, students will be required to undertake a research investigation on one of three potential topics. Different topic choices are provided every year. Students will need to complete primary fieldwork and data analysis in addition to carrying out secondary to support their investigation and build upon their wider understanding of the topic. Students should incorporate a variety of sources including journals, textbooks, broadcast media, internet searches and additional field trips and site visits.

Students will be assessed on their investigation via exam Paper 4 where they must answer two structured data questions and two essay questions on their chosen topic. The students have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete the Paper which is worth 50 marks, 20% of the final grade.
Pre-U Geography Tutors - Working with a Pre-U Geography tutor will help students to appreciate how various features and processes across the globe interact, developing a real understanding of the connection between the Physical and Human world. Tutors will also ensure students cultivate all of the required Geographical skills and are able to apply their knowledge and abilities to a variety of Geographical issues, perfectly preparing them for their final exams and further education.

We don’t have a sign up fee for new customers, we don’t charge an introduction fee, and we don’t charge administration fees. If a tutor is late for a lesson then it is the duty of the tutor to arrange to make up the lost time by finding a time that suits you both, either on the same day or another mutually convenient time. Usually the tutor will make up the time during the lesson. For example if the tutor was 30 minutes late they would stay an extra 30 minutes at the end of the lesson. If this is not possible you can then either ask the tutor to make up the time at the next lesson, or contact us and we will arrange a partial refund for you. If the tutor fails to do this then please contact us via disputes@tutorhouse.co.uk and we will respond to your dispute within 48 hours, if not sooner.

If you are running late for a booking then please do let the tutor know via the in-app messenger as soon as possible because the tutor may still have to finish the lesson at the scheduled time, depending on his/her availability. However, tutors will usually try to make up time lost at the end of the session for the intended duration, although it’s important to note that this is at the tutor’s discretion. Tutors will usually wait for 30 minutes, but again this is at the tutor’s discretion – tutors may well have to leave at the original time for another lesson. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.

If you are late for the lesson, tutors will charge for the full amount that has been agreed and confirmed. We operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, which means that if you cancel the lesson with 48 hours you will be charged the full amount.
