Hi, I'm Susanne, a language tutor with over 10 years experience principally teaching German and English, and additionally French, to a broad range of students from professional backgrounds, from large corporate companies down to smaller institutions and private clients. My experience covers teaching individuals as well as groups, ranging from the introduction of base concepts for complete beginners (A1), through to advanced level and conversational training (C2) for the very experienced. I also help with exam preparation, i.e. GCSE, A-Levels and Goethe-Certificate. My first years of teaching focused on pupils and after school tutoring whilst I was studying Product Design in Germany. I took up teaching again in 2013 in London and acquired my TEFL qualification. This allowed me to reach out to private professionals and also to teach in companies, who offer their employees language classes on a regular basis to improve their business relationships with Germany. My approach is very much tailored to each learner’s specific needs. I’m a very dedicated and personable teacher who enjoys the variety of different individuals and finding ways to help them learn best. I am very passionate about teaching and enjoy all aspects that it encompasses. I'm keen on continuing to develop my language knowledge outside of teaching. I have basic knowledge of Italian and have taken up Spanish, which is very useful for me to also help Spanish speaking students learn other languages, as having knowledge of their language allows me to draw parallels between the two, and so accelerate their learning. I very much welcome the variety of students’ backgrounds and can often explain grammar structures in comparing and relating to their own language. I also offer field trips for those who are a bit more advanced in German or English and wish to learn and have fun to express themselves about specific topics, i.e. art, education, politics, or train the distinct use of their linguistic style, i.e. stylistic devices, figures of speech or set locutions. This could be a visit to a museum or to the Royal College of Art, where we look at works and talk about them, put them in context etc. Outside of teaching I love being outdoors, in particular rock climbing and hiking and exploring new places. I also am a very keen baker. Testimonials of my previous clients: Michael Penn / Professor, Stanford University (10.08.2018) "Susanne is an amazingly gifted pedagogue and a great German teacher. Regardless of your level, you’ll learn tons working with her. Susanne’s enthusiasm and love for the language is contagious. She constantly finds innovative approaches to help one improve—whether they be articles tailored to your interests, word games, or museum trips to see German artists. She is extremely patient and is able to find exactly the right level of intervention to help lessen mistakes but still boosting your confidence. Her background and even her previous work in design give her teaching a depth and breadth that is wonderful (and fun) to be a part of. She perfectly balances organized (she always has a clear learning plan) with flexible (she tailors things, both beforehand and-the-fly, depending on what’s happening in the classroom). Because German is essential for my work, I’ve had dozens of German tutors over the years and Susanne is among the very best." Oliver Smeeth / Corporate Cousel (5.06.2018) "I’m so pleased I found Susanne after struggling to make progress with other teachers and classes. Susanne quickly worked out how best to help me tailoring each lesson to address gaps in my knowledge and delivering content in a way that works for me. She has also been incredibly flexible working around my sometimes long and unpredictable working hours, which I’ve really appreciated. Overall Susanne is an incredibly dedicated, personal and professional German teacher all goes above and beyond to help clients make real progress. I really look forward to my classes with her. Thanks Susanne for making learning German fun again!" Ann-Catherine Mathias, mother of 13 year-old pupil (4.07.2017) "Susanne Rueb has been tutoring my son Niklas (aged 13) in German and French for over 9 months on an almost weekly basis. She is a lovely friendly person who has managed to motivate our son to concentrate for 2 hours on a Saturday morning, which I had thought impossible. As an Anglo-German family we took the decision to send our children to the German school in London but have found that, despite speaking German at home, our eldest son needed some additional help to improve particularly his written German. He was also beginning to struggle in French and had lost all motivation or ambition in relation to this subject. As is often the case, he found it hard to work with a parent and so we looked for a tutor would encourage and motivate him. We were incredibly fortunate to find Susanne. Niklas responded incredibly well to her from the start. She manages to structure the lessons in a way that keep Niklas interested and engaged. She prepares material for each lesson and makes sure that she is aware of curriculum and tests planned at school, so that they can practice appropriately. Susanne often goes over homework and previous tests, which Niklas has found particularly helpful. She frequently brings additional teaching materials that help to make lessons more fun. Niklas really likes working with her. Since Susanne started working with him, Niklas’ written German (and his corresponding grades) have improved significantly. In French the gradual deterioration in his grade has stopped and they are improving. Whereas he was heading towards a 4 (German marking - an English D) he is now working towards a 2 (B). I would certainly recommend Susanne as a tutor."

I have taught for very many years. Now retired from the Finance/Investment profession, I write fiction for children and young adults. Teaching has always been part of my life - for my children and those of some friends. Also, I have been in formal tutoring for over 5 years, covering primary, secondary and some university students. I appreciated the privilege of success with many, including a determined but dyslexic young learner. One of my starting principles is that learning need NOT be terrifying. Even Algebra can be fun! The Student's mindset and experience are always key: I try to support the approach of the school (especially with Primary and Secondary) to avoid confusion for the learner. However, in the effort to lead the student to realise that nothing is impossible, I try to explore confidence-boosting steps! Practical examples are always critical, for example, past papers, of course. Or possibly, where necessary, a ‘mini role-play’ of sections in a play for the sake of realism, the student’s self-immersion and encouragement.

Who could benefit from online English Tuition?

As the mother tongue of the UK and an international language, both of business and diplomacy, proficiency in English communication is essential for students of every age and level. The ability to express yourself clearly and effectively in written and spoken English is a vital skill and students who are able to excel in English will feel the benefits in both their academic and daily lives. While deeply beneficial, students can struggle to grasp the nuances of the English language and the challenges of English study only increase through the education system. There are multiple points in the academic system where English may prove too complex for students to understand without support. Online English tuition can provide a solution for students of every age and level.

Primary Online Tutors: Online English tutors for Primary school students are able to build a solid foundation upon which all of a student’s further education, across all academic subjects, will be based. At this level, students will develop fundamental skills such as reading, writing and speaking in English. Our online English tutors will be able to hone in on any particular areas a student is struggling with, from spelling to the pronunciation of certain sounds. The online platform makes English tuition a fun and engaging activity, with tutors able to incorporate sound effects, games and visual stimuli into their lessons as well as leaving valuable notes. Equally, online English tutors are able to build a connection to students where they feel safe and supported, building their confidence and instilling a love for reading, writing and all things English.
GCSE or IGCSE Online Tutors: IGCSE and GCSE English courses represent a real step-up from their education so far in terms of academic rigour and the importance of a student's final grades. A pass or above in English is a prerequisite for a number of colleges in addition to being required for acceptance onto the majority of University courses. Equally, many employers use English GCSE grades to determine whether applicants have the necessary English proficiency to perform job roles. The GCSE English course develops a student’s reading, writing and speaking skills as well as building their capacity to analyse, argue and process information. With the help of an online English tutor, students can get the support they need to develop the knowledge and skills required for GCSE success. Lessons can be booked around their schedule with tutors catering the content to reflect where a student is struggling and their point in the GCSE curriculum. With online English tutoring, students will benefit from a variety of online tools as well as valuable notes. Improvement in English means that students are able to improve their grades across all GCSE subjects, in addition to getting top marks in possibly the most crucial core subject at this vital point in their education.
A-level or Pre-U Online Tutors: A-level and Pre-U English courses present a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of work students must deliver if they are to succeed. All A-level qualifications are integral to a student’s future ambitions, whether academic or employment based. Some employers and University courses specifically require applicants to get top A-level English grades. The course also introduces students to a number of culturally important texts, intensely develops their communication skills, builds their analytical and critical thinking abilities and enhancing their research skills - all of which are hugely advantageous to students whatever their future holds. While success at A-level English is deeply beneficial, it is also a point in the academic journey where many students struggle. Online English A-level tutors are experienced teaching the course of all the major exam boards and can give targeted tuition support that ensures students get top grades. Online tutors can also identify areas where a student is struggling and present teaching in a way that suits the students learning style. Online English tuition can be scheduled to fit around the busy lives of A-level students, with lessons possible while travelling, in lunch breaks at school, or from home - to name just a few possibilities. With private online English tuition, students are able to get first-class educational support that ensures they succeed in their English A-levels and reap all of the rewards of a top English grade.
University Online Tutors: Studying English at University is a huge undertaking, with students expected to analyse a broad selection of texts with nuance and high-level critique, as well as demonstrating exceptional oral and written communication in a range of mediums. Obtaining a top English degree can open up a number of employment opportunities, but is no mean feat. Many students struggle with the vastly different learning style of University, strenuous academic rigour, and the challenge of juggling the responsibilities of adult life. An online English tutor for University students can provide the answer. English University tutors are experienced with the University course requirements, many also doubling as English lecturers or professors, and so can give expert support to students. The online platform enables students to book lessons with complete flexibility and at a competitive rate, with students able to learn any time and from almost anywhere. With the guidance of an online English University tutor, students can reach the pinnacle of their English abilities and enjoy a successful academic and employment future.
Adult Learner Online Tutors: Adult learners study English for a variety of reasons and may require anything from basic English conversation practice to high-level education qualification support. Whatever the adult student’s needs, Tutor House online English tutors are able to create lessons and a learning plan that ensures they exceed their goals. Adult life is particularly hectic, which makes the online tutoring platform beneficial as students can book lessons at a time and in a place that suits them. Many adult learners also feel more comfortable learning via the online platform as it helps negate any potential embarrassment. Online tutors must adhere to the same high standards as our face-to-face tutors and will deliver the same top quality tutoring to their students, with the addition of a wealth of online teaching tools.

Yes. All tutors must have a valid DBS certificate before their profile goes live on the Tutor House site. We do in-house DBS checks, which means we get DBS done very quickly. If a tutor’s DBS certificate is not validated or has expired then their profile will taken down until a new DBS certificate is issued. Although this is completely over to the tutor to notify us when it has expired. Once we’ve checked the tutors DBS, we are not responsible for keeping it up to date. A DBS (Disclosed Baring Service) is a way of checking tutors. Tutor House performs a background check, and a police checks. We make sure that all tutors are suitable to work with children and adults, before their profiles go live. The DBS replaced the CRB.

While indisputably vital, English can also be an extremely difficult subject for students to grasp at various points of the educational system and beyond.
