English Literature with Katherine A

Hello, I'm Katherine.

I've loved English since I was very small, and I am a self confessed Bookworm!

In 2010, after I completed my MA, I gained my CELTA and moved to China. It was a fantastic experience with my students aged 4-19. We focused on grammar and vocabulary, and worked on moving up the CEFR scale. I also got the chance to tutor Trinity and IELTS exams.

I have always enjoyed working with international students. I speak fluent German, intermediate Mandarin and beginners French. My next challenge is learning Polish and Turkish.

In 2013 it was time to move back home and I worked as an Academic Director for a summer school. Our roll was 1500 students from 11 nationalities and I was responsible for all of their learning!

I moved on from the world of ESOL in 2013 and completed my PGCE in Secondary English at the University of Nottingham. I moved back to London in 2014.

Since then, my focus was language and literature for KS3 students. I diversified into a number of roles as well, working on AQA GCSE Language and Literature, resit GCSE classes and GCSE Media. One of the most enjoyable experiences was teaching 'Of Mice and Men' to a group of students from around the world who had only had beginners English when they started. I was then lucky enough to gain an ESOL role within a school focusing on literacy and small groups of beginners.

My proudest achievement was my 'Nurture Class': I worked with seven students whose levels were below those needed at KS2. Their needs included ADHD, Dyslexia, ASD, HI, VI and Global Learning delay. I am trained to work with kids across the SEN spectrum.

Working one to one with a student is my strength. I love customising my teaching to meet a student's needs, and seeing their progress day to day.
