Hello, I'm Marie from Oxford, UK. I'm a professional teacher, University Lecturer and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Trainer. My specialist subjects include Business, Marketing, English Language, Media Studies and Sociology. I'm also a qualified English teacher, and have recently been tutoring students to prepare them for their 11+, 13+, and IELTS exams, as well as delivering a complete primary homeschooling programme. In my career so far, I've been lucky enough to work with some fantastic education institutions including Universities and Colleges in Oxford and China. I've delivered professional development training to teachers and professional staff from many different countries, and my work has also seen me travel to places such as Russia and Kurdistan. I am passionate about helping my students and clients achieve their goals through education, and I'm equally as happy delivering bespoke training sessions to large groups of staff, teaching a University course, or getting a call from an individual student telling me they've achieved the grade they needed that we worked on in their private study sessions. Before I retrained as a teacher, I worked as a Marketing Manager and Project Manager for a University in Oxford, and these skills and responsibilities have helped to shape my adaptable teaching style and capabilities. I would love to hear from you and find out about your training and education needs, and let's achieve your goals, together.

I have been working with young people for over 4 years now and have gained a well rounded portfolio of experience. I have been grateful to receive wonderful feedback from students, parents and colleagues! I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Bristol with a BSc in psychology & philosophy. I worked at a TEFL Language school where I designed a cultural programme for students and was the chief point of contact as a mentor. Additionally, I worked in the SEN department at a London secondary school supporting students with all Key Stages including A Level & IB. I have worked with students who have aspergers, autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, sight-impairment and physical disability’s. A few examples of previous tutoring jobs: - Mentored a teenager over an 8 month period. - Tutored full time for the past 3 years as a subject generalist with an emphasis on the arts and humanities subjects. I have taught the core KS1, KS2, KS3, KS4 and KS5 syllabuses. Covering all subjects such as art, philosophy, psychology, history, english literature & language, maths, chemistry, biology, physics. I have also done A level and IB tuition for subjects such as history, philosophy, english, art and psychology. - I have worked full time as a home school tutor teaching the core subjects, arts & humanities for ages 5, 7, 9, 11 & 14. - I homeschooled two brothers from a high profile family and prepared them for the English curriculum (from the American system). I taught english literature & language , R.E, art, politics and current affairs, textiles and took them on educational excursions. They also had to pass school entrance exams 11+, 13+, both successfully. - I homeschooled two sisters ages 7 & 9 and taught all the core subjects as well the arts and humanities. I prepared the youngest for her 7 + exams which she successfully passed. My students have gone on to excel in many subjects but especially creative writing and critical thinking. One student of mine was refusing to write at his previous school but after a year of working together he gained entrance to a top London school and is now currently the top of his class for English and is particularly confident with his creative writing. Another student of mine has gone on to win poetry competitions. My teaching style is engaging, innovative and supportive. I try to instill confidence and academic curiosity in my students, as I believe this is equally important to achieving top marks. * Fun fact about me: I paint professionally and pursue writing when I’m not tutoring. I am now keen to take on more students and would love the opportunity to work with you! Once we have been in touch and established something my response time will be very rapid. However because I am very busy it might initially take a little longer to respond so I'm sorry for that! Should be worth the wait though.

800+ hours tutoring experience, 4th year Aerospace Engineering student at Imperial College London with a President`s Scholarship. I teach students online as well as in the Fulham area. About me: Having taught a very wide range of students (from a class of Ethiopian orphans to a boy from Eton College), I’ve developed an ability to engage any student to enable them to learn the content thoroughly. An engaged, interested student retains the information taught far more effectively than a reluctant pupil, so when tutoring I make sure to build a rapport with the children I teach. I first got into teaching from spending my summers working as a sailing instructor. When I saw a child in the cohort struggling, I began to spend an hour or so during the week focusing specifically on that child, and first saw for myself the benefit individual one-on-one teaching can give. Realising how much I enjoyed the satisfaction of significantly improving the ability of a few children, I used my teaching experience to start tutoring one-one-one. My experience: - GCSE Physics student, resulting in her achieving an A* after being predicted a D grade (from a 3 to an 8 in the new grading system). - A-level Maths and Physics student, achieved grades required to gain entry to study Mathematics at Queen Mary University, London. - 10 year old boy for entry in the 11+ examinations, in Maths, English, and verbal reasoning, resulting in the boy getting into the school his parents and him wanted. - Coding and robotics teaching: recruited and subsequently trained by Fire Tech Camp, where I worked over university holidays. This gave me experience breaking down difficult concepts to children of a wide range of ages, who all learnt differently and required me to adapt my teaching style accordingly. - Qualified sailing instructor: taught various sailing courses to children and adults, gained more experience in working with different learning styles and methods to engage pupils.

I am a very passionate and patient tutor whose approach focuses on encouraging independent thought and interest. I have tutored privately for over three years and strive to make teaching fun and engaging, adapting to each individual student's needs. I studied English (MA, 2:1) at the University of St Andrews, following which I completed a masters (MLitt) in Creative Writing- Writing for Performance, also at St Andrews. I then went on to train as an actor at the Oxford School of Drama. I attended a grammar school (Dr Challoner's High School for Girls) local to where I grew up, following which I had the privilege of going to St Paul's Girls' School for sixth form, where I achieved: A* in English Literature, A in Italian, A in French, and B in AS Maths. I also have a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and have previously taught beginners' Ballroom and Latin American Dancing. By nature of my creative writing masters, you have to be flexible in terms of what a director wants from a piece of new writing, and from my training in acting, you have to constantly react to the person in front of you, whether it be the actors you're working with, the director or the audience. This has fed into my flexible and wholly interactive teaching style. Learning should be fun, and I encourage independent thinking, creativity and the articulation of both, whatever the subject. I love my subjects and love sharing that with students. My primary interests, understandably, are literature and theatre, and I spend my much of my free time reading, watching film and TV, or at the theatre. Other interests include Ballroom and Latin American dancing, cooking, yoga and travelling. TESTIMONIALS KS2 English and English as a Foreign Language “Cara has tutored my son for six months. She is a responsible, hardworking, and decent teacher. During this period, she has helped a lot with my son's English studies, and my son really likes to learn from her.” KS3 English “Over her time with my child, my observations were that Cara’s personal philosophy were towards: dedication and passion for delivering noticeable improvement, commitment to exhibiting integrity and trust, and focus on the child achieving excellent results. Benefits of her tutoring manifested in the child’s performance in school.” GCSE English Literature and Language, and Common Entrance Scholarship “I can wholeheartedly support Cara as a tutor; she is first class in every way and made the subject accessible for my son who is more math and science oriented. With Cara’s help, my son got an excellent score on both his scholarship exam and GCSE, way beyond what he expected. More the point, he learned to better structure his answers and provide the types of citation and details that had been lacking. He grew in confidence that he could tackle pretty much any prose or English essay. We are deeply grateful to Cara. She always came exceedingly prepared, encouraged my son to be better prepared and helped him in supportive and confidence building ways.” GCSE English Literature and Language “As an English and Literature tutor for my Year 11 child, Cara proved herself to be knowledgeable in the subjects and was able to impact the knowledge in the child. Her character and style made my child look forward to the sessions.” A level English Literature “Cara was and is a very understanding tutor. She was able to make me feel a lot more confident in myself when it came to English Literature. Considering I had been struggling with it until I decided to get a tutor, she always made me not give up so easily. Her teaching methods were effective and made the subject more interesting. She would always make sure that I would be the one to answer a question or think of a suggestion instead of answering it for me. She always gave me time to think and was always open to anything I would suggest even if it was not always correct. I definitely ended up enjoying my English lessons with Cara more than having them at school. I was studying with her for almost 6 months and we managed to get me from a grade F to a grade C which was my goal. I would not have passed my A level and got into my first choice if I had not started studying with Cara.”

My name is Samuel and I graduated from Cambridge University in 2007 with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering. In addition to this, I hold a Professional Tutoring Certificate (Distinction awarded) and I am a fully qualified teacher too. I have a passion for teaching/tutoring Mathematics and Sciences (mostly Physics, Chemistry and Biology) to GCSE and A-level students. I have mentored and tutored students from an assorted array of backgrounds since 2002, helping some to get to Oxbridge and Ivy League universities and helping them with interview preparations when requested. My teaching journey started in 2002 when I took a year out working as an assistant/support teacher actively involved in mentoring, lesson planning and marking. I take pride in having been commended for my teaching style where I always ensure to explain everything in the simplest of manners and take an approach that most suits the student to bring out their best effort. After graduating from Cambridge, I went on to seek professional employment as a graduate engineer but never left my passion for teaching. I therefore volunteered as a STEM ambassador where I shared my passion for Science and Mathematics to students from various backgrounds. I continue to take utmost joy and pleasure in tutoring and helping students attain their full potential; and in this regard, I can assure any prospective students that they’ll be getting the most out of their time and money whilst paving way for a bright future.

I am a 26-year-old Oxford graduate (first-class honours) and fully-qualified English teacher with over five years teaching and tutoring experience. In terms of my own qualifications, I have 11 GCSEs (9 A* / 2 A grades), 5 A-Levels (5 A* grades), a Bachelor Degree (1st Class) and a Master's Degree (Distinction). I also have three years` experience teaching English Literature and English Language at Hurstpierpoint College, an outstanding, mixed-sex independent school in Sussex. Here, I taught students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13. My classes at GCSE and A-Level consistently attained excellent results and I am familiar with a variety of exam-boards, including Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and AQA. I have a strong understanding of exam specifications, mark-schemes and course structures, and I have extensive experience teaching and marking English coursework. As Head of Year 9 English at Hurstpierpoint, I have valuable experience designing department-wide learning resources which effectively promote good pupil progress. When I moved to London to complete an MA at King`s College London (graduating in 2019 with Distinction), I worked with the tutoring agency London Scholars, providing 1-1 English tutoring to over 15 students across London. In this time, I worked with pupils in Year 1 through to Year 13. As well as assisting with GCSE and A-Level exams, I worked closely with Year 12/13 students to support them in their university applications, running mock interviews, supervising EPQs and scrutinising personal statements. I also worked with students to develop their Verbal Reasoning and English skills in preparation for 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance examinations. I received positive feedback from all my clients who have found me to be a professional, friendly and knowledgeable tutor, equipped with effective learning resources. Last year I took a maternity cover post as an English Teacher at St George`s international school, Montreux, Switzerland. During this time I had sole responsibility for Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 English classes. This experience greatly developed my knowledge of international exam boards and also allowed me to work closely with EAL (English as an Additional Language) students. SOME FEEDBACK ON TUTORING SESSIONS: "Marcus was a superb tutor. This is my child`s assessment: "His understanding of the exam boards and the ways examiners mark essays has really helped me to adapt my style of writing and I feel a lot more confident in my written responses. He is always eager to improve my understanding of texts and has helped me become more critical of my own ideas surrounding them. Not only is he a brilliant academically focused teacher, he is an immensely approachable and likeable person" - Peter "Very good tutor for English, highly recommended!" - Radhika "Marcus is very professional in his approach. So far my daughter has had about 3-4 sessions with Marcus and we have already seen a big improvement in her writing skills. He is patient and engaging and always arrives with a prepared lesson plan. We hope to continue with Marcus this fall." - Milena "Marcus is very professional, organised and very hardworking and he has the ability to engage my son, exceptionally well throughout the lesson. I have nothing but the highest praises for Marcus’ teaching approach and effectiveness. He is also a very exceptional English Tutor. He is very knowledgable on the material that my son is studying and has gone through it, thoroughly with him so far. My son is very lucky to have Marcus as a tutor, as he’s brilliant all round and I am extremely grateful." - Dionne "Marcus tutored our daughter through her English GCSE exams in 2019. Alice wanted help with English Language, particularly creative writing. Marcus`s work with Alice helped her structure her writing and prepare her not only for her creative writing exam but also with an approach to her writing and written questions across different subjects. She gained confidence as well as knowledge from her tutorials. Marcus is easy going, engaging and fitted straight in with a busy household. During Alices recent exams Marcus took the time to check up on Alice and offer encouragement. I`m happy to highly recommend Marcus." - Alex "Marcus has been an excellent tutor for my son who is taking his GCSEs shortly. He is extremely well prepared and organised, with presentations for each session. He gives me immediate feedback and a summary of what has been covered and what needs to be done. A*!" - Max TUTORING APPROACH: In terms of my tutoring approach, I pride myself on providing a tailored service which responds to the particular strengths and needs of the student. Through questioning, constant feedback on work and adaptive planning, I hope to develop a system of teaching and learning with the student which will best ensure their continued progress. I generally build my tutoring sessions around practice papers, example answers and mark-schemes, breaking down the tasks so the student can work on the elements they find most difficult. English is a subject which requires a whole host of skills - timing, planning, structuring, careful reading, comprehension, accurate SPAG (spelling, punctuation, grammar), creativity, analysis, proof-reading - and my lessons encourage students to identify their areas for improvement and to implement practical strategies for overcoming areas of weakness. Above all, I consider myself a warm and enthusiastic teacher. It is my belief that students learn best when they are engaged yet relaxed, when they feel motivated to ask questions and reflect positively on their work. With academic pressures as intense ever, it is my intention to provide sessions which make the student feel in control of their work. Should you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

An experienced and highly qualified A level and GCSE Biology teacher with a passion for supporting students in gaining the confidence to achieve their full potential. Four years experience teaching and tutoring the AQA specification, three of which in an OFSTED outstanding Grammar school. Experienced in supporting students struggling to meet their target and those wanting to unlock the A/A*. I have supported many students in achieving grade 9s (at GCSE), A*s (at A level) and improving their exam technique in order to gain confidence in their own ability. I graduated in 2017 from the University of Leeds with a 2:1 Biology BSc with honours and from Edge Hill with a Secondary Science PGCE in 2018. Since then I have been a Biology/Science teacher but since Sept (2021) I have chosen to tutor fulltime. Evidenced success in helping guide struggling students through complicated content by drawing it out and supporting them in providing the explanation themselves. Students I have tutored previously have gone from a grade 5 to an 8 at GCSE and from an E to a C at A level. All students I have tutored have attained at least their target grade. I have an `exam technique` focussed approach to ensure together we are improving the students ability to answer any question under pressure and making a positive impact long-term.

Hello, my name is Tancrede and I am second-year economics student at University College London. The typical length of a lesson is between 1 and 2 hours, although I am very flexible and I can adapt to tutees' needs and preferences. Regarding my teaching methodology, I first ensure that students know the course material perfectly before doing exercises or past papers as I believe exercises require to apply the course material. Also, I put emphasis on using logic and critical thinking rather than just applying the course material as I think this helps a lot more for understanding and answering more complex questions. I believe my greatest strength is my ability to always give my best and put as much effort as I can in my work. Furthermore, as an international student, I am used to adapting to different environments and people. For those reasons, I believe I will be a good tutor as I will be committed to my students and I will adapt my teaching methods to each of my students.

I am currently in my 3rd year of a BSc Biology degree at the University of St Andrews. Alongside modules covering all aspects of Biology, I also take Chemistry and Statistics modules to aid my studies. During A Levels I achieved an A* in Biology (97%) and an A in Chemistry. During my 2 years tutoring I have tutored Biology and Chemistry, mainly for GCSE and A Level students, and covering a range of exam boards including: AQA, CIE, Edexcel, OCR A, OCR B, and WJEC. Over my time, as a tutor, I have completed over 800 hours of lessons and have helped many students improve their grades, achieve places in their dream universities and most importantly, improve their confidence in both themselves and their studies. Being able to help a student with their confidence is what I find to be the most rewarding part of being a tutor. Below are a few reviews from previous parents and students on their experience with me as a tutor (all names have been removed for privacy reasons): "“We are so grateful for all your care and hard work with [student]. I am very grateful for your professionalism and kind manner over our time working together. We would highly recommend you to anyone, you are an excellent tutor.” - Parent “Just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help and support with [student] Biology A level. She has had huge benefit from your 1-2-1 sessions, and you have had such a positive influence during what has been a very difficult year for so many students. You have been extremely motivational for her and succeeded where we have not!! She always was ready, prepared and looked forward to her lessons with you, and you gave her lots of confidence. I will be delighted to recommend to you anyone looking for a biology or Chemistry tutor.” - Parent “I really enjoyed our lessons so thank you for making Biology easier for me :)” - Student My lessons are completely personalised to the needs of my student. Before each lesson we will decide on a topic for the next lesson. During the lesson, I find the most effective use of time is to spend the first half revising the theory and reviewing any weak points in the topic, and using the remainder of the lesson to do past paper questions. However, if you feel you would benefit from a specific lesson structure or more/less review time, I am completely flexible as I want you to walk away feeling satisfied by the lesson. I look forward to starting lessons together! :)

I am a masters student at Trinity College, Oxford University. Having achieved 11 A* and an A at GCSE and 3A* and 2A's at A-level, and a first in my degree, I know how stressful exam's can be and how to ensure academic success at the highest level. Through my experience of exams and degrees, I have learnt the core skills examiners are looking for, as well as how to explain complex ideas and maximise learning for my students benefit. I have been tutoring using online platforms for over 2 years, I have found it very rewarding to watch my students learn and grow intellectually as well as seeing the great improvements in their exam results. I have tutored in a variety of subjects, mainly working in the humanities from 11+ through to A-level. I have also tutored extensively in university and Oxbridge applications as well as common entrance. In total I have tutored around 50 students, I have always been able to build a good working relationship with my students, which is so crucial to a motivated and enjoyable learning experience. I have been excellently reviewed both for the drastically improved exam results of my students, as well as the improvements in their intellectual confidence and skills. My teaching style focuses on identifying and adapting to each students academic needs (including SEN). With limited time to learn syllabuses and prepare for exams, it is critical that I first work out the gaps in a students knowledge and what areas of their exam technique need strengthening. To do this I often ask my students to go through the curriculum and rate their confidence as well as reviewing recent work. Once this has been done, I devise a programme of learning to target the areas that need the most improvement, consulting with students and parents as to where they feel they need the most help. Each lesson is meticulously planned and often includes the student building up a very useful set of revision notes that I have prepared and they have taken in lessons. I view the setting and marking of work outside of school as critical to the value of additional tutoring. I will set students a piece of work and give them very detailed feedback, line by line in a written document and in person. I will also encourage a student to work through problems and present arguments from their work in a lesson since this helps build the core intellectual skills all exams are testing. I also like to plan and prepare essays or exam questions with my students since this ingrains the ability to think through exam questions in a structured and time efficient way. In essay based subjects, I will teach students the perfect way to write persuasive and clear essays, adapting the structure to each exam board. When I am teaching content to students I always prepare notes or a presentation to use as a stimulus, and focus on constantly engaging the student in a conversation about the material and to test their understanding.Through this teaching style I hope to equip my students with a broad range of intellectual skills, as well as the knowledge, technique and revision skills to maximise their exam achievement. I constantly invest in the latest textbooks for OCR, AQA and Edexcel Economics, Philosophy/RS and Politics. Staying up-to date with the latest syllabuses and question styles of the various boards is so important for a tutor as it takes the pressure off students of not knowing what to expect. I also read examiner reports for each years exams, as well as consulting model answers. These are very useful resources for tutors as they offer insight into what markers are looking for, allowing me to tailor my advice, year on year, for every exam. I have all of my notes from my own A-levels and GCSE's which I constantly update and refine for my students. I prepare diligently for each lesson to ensure I offer a complete knowledge of every aspect of the syllabus. I am extremely passionate about learning and view it as highly important that each students reaches their full academic and intellectual potential, I hope to offer a highly rewarding and engaging learning experience that leaves students satisfied that they have done all the preparation needed for their goals and aims.

How do I prepare my child for the Common Entrance?

The 11+ Common Entrance exam can be daunting for children and their families, as it's one of the first times they'll undergo a real timed assessment. It's better to over-prepare than under-prepare when it comes to the 11+ exams. Make sure your child is confident on all the content and has practiced in exam conditions so they're able to manage their time properly on the day. Whilst being prepared is important, you don't want your child stressing over the exam, so it's important to take frequent breaks and make revision fun with rewards and snacks.

What is the 11+ Common Entrance?

The 11+ Common Entrance is the exams required to get into specific secondary schools. Children will take these entrance exams in Year 6 to determine their place at senior independent schools. The 11+ Common Entrance exams will assess children on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics. The 11+ tests are designed to assess children's academic potential.

Why Tutor House tutors?

Our tutors have years of experience helping students prepare for the Common Entrance exams and have a track record of success in helping students get into top secondary schools. Preparing for the 11+ can be tough, but our tutors are here to support you every step of the way.

Are you thinking about getting a 11+ or 13+ Common Entrance tutor?

Common Entrance preparation is very important, it's key to take at least a year preparing for the entrance tests. Tutor House can help with every step of the 11+ and 13+ tests. With a Common Entrance tutor, your child can get access to Common Entrance past papers and gain confidence in their own revision and exam technique.

Common Entrance exams and the preparation for those exams can be a minefield. Parents should check the open days for the schools that they wish to apply to and endeavour to visit the schools and listen to the Headteachers talk. This will enable them to get a good overview and a feel for the school and help them decide if this place would suit their child's’ personality and academic ability. (We offer a personalised service for parents who would like the expert advice of one of our experienced tutors). Most schools have a selection procedure that can be very competitive.

Getting the right support for your child for their 11+ or 13+ Common Entrance exam is vital to make sure your child gets accepted into the top secondary school of their choice. Whether your child needs to boost their grades significantly or needs that extra bit of support coming up to the big day, Tutor House can provide you with top-quality tutors to get your child the results they both want and need. Our tutors are well used to preparing children for the next step in their education making sure their students are confident in all topics covered in both the 11+ and 13+ Common Entrance exams. These exams set your children up for the rest of their education, therefore, at this stage, it’s so important to consider whether your child would benefit from the support and teaching from an experienced tutor.

At Tutor House, we provide both online and in-person one-on-one tutoring sessions and pride ourselves on the high quality and experience of our 11+ and 13+ tutors. We ensure that every tutor we provide has been DBS checked and can provide your, or your child, with the support they deserve when investing in their education. With our unique online learning facilities getting 11+ and 13+ entrance exam support has never been easier. Our tutors provided one-on-one tailored teaching to their students and will be matched with your child with our unique algorithm to ensure our tutor is the perfect match for your child's needs.
