I am a multilinguist with considerable experience in teaching French and Spanish to a diverse range of students. I have a 100% success rate in terms of my students improving their academic grades. I am extremely passionate about my subject and committed to understanding and engaging with each new student's learning needs. I tailor my individual teaching programmes to ensure each student is able to develop and move confidently towards their goal, whether it be academic or personal. I choose to work with students who are committed to working towards their goal - they don't have to love the subject to begin with, they just have to want to improve, the love comes later, often when they discover how simple it can be and they start to see improvements in their ability and understanding! Among my previous students are Yas, a Spanish GCSE student who went from a predicted D to receiving an A* overall in 14 months, Roderick, who with no prior teaching since his French GCSE 16 months before we began, received an A* at French A Level after 7 months of home-schooling with me and Kendall, a French IB student who went from grade 3/4 to achieving a final grade 6/7 in 20 months - she called me up in Guatemala on results day so I knew it must be good news! Testimonials: "James tutored both my daughters for GCSE Spanish and they both received A*. This was particularly impressive with my eldest daughter who was on a Grade D at the end of Year 10. James accelerated Yasmin's learning rapidly over 6 months in Year 11, and changed her attitude towards Spanish from a boring difficult subject to her favourite! Aside from his in-depth understanding of the curriculum and effective teaching techniques, James is a lovely person with a great sense of humour, and the girls really enjoyed his company. We'd highly recommend James to anyone wanting to improve their grades and language skills." Zaya F - Spanish GCSE "James was simply brilliant in giving my son confidence in his ability to learn languages, which ultimately led to GCSE success. He possesses a magical ability to build self-esteem. Invaluable. Fabulous. Very highly recommended." Donna G – French & Spanish IGCSE "James tutored me in French for just over a year for the international baccalaureate. Marked out of 7, I originally achieved 3-4s in all my examinations. James helped with reading, writing and oral presentations. He helped me to increase my confidence in speaking and also taught me invaluable techniques for verb conjugations. In the end I was able to achieve a 6/7 in my final IB results. Thank you James !" Kendall U - French International Baccalaureate "James was instrumental in getting my son to an A* for his Spanish A Level this year. Over a period of 8 months James worked to improve Omar’s original predicted grade of B, focussing on some core grammar which had been missed by the school and developing his reading, writing and oral skills. James often made himself available at short notice to review and offer feedback on Omar’s practice essays for the literature part of the course. We are delighted with the result and with the high level of professional service that James provides. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend." Mehta F - Spanish A Level “My daughter Chloe was struggling with Spanish during year 11, she failed her mock and was really worried. We found James and he worked steadily with her for the three months leading up to her GCSE. I’m delighted to say she achieved a 6(B)!! Incredible...a fail to a B in only 25 hours tutoring! Thank you James, she couldn’t have done it without you!” Beth W – Spanish GCSE James tutored my daughter for just over a year at French Pre-U. Our aim was to secure a comfortable distinction. James knew the syllabus inside out and ensured no stone had been left unturned in her knowledge and exam technique. We were delighted but not too surprised when the final result came back a D1. We’re thrilled with James, his approach and the care he brings to each session. Such a star. Mikael J – Cambridge Pre U French "James is an amazing teacher. He got my daughter to a B in French GCSE from a predicted D, and my son to a B in Spanish GCSE from a predicted E. This helped my daughter to get to UCL and put the Russell Group within my son's reach. His teaching style is unique. Within minutes of arrival, he had won the respect of both my teenagers. He made himself available at weekends and in the evenings both in person and over Skype. I am so grateful for his help. I highly recommend him." Rachel G - French & Spanish GCSE "James is an outstanding teacher - he taught my son to find his own motivation & the confidence he needed to excel in Spanish. He brings the language to life and creates a self sufficiency in study habits that was wonderful to observe - the GCSE process was made palatable and non daunting ! I would wholly recommend him to anyone looking for a tutor that cares about the child in the most holistic sense and leaves them with the skills to tackle languages independently post their time with him - he was an absolute star !" Shaleen Y - Spanish IGCSE "James is one of the best tutors I have ever met. He is clearly passionate about teaching and has such an engaging and enthusiastic manner. Anyone who is lucky enough to come across James has found a true gem. I cannot recommend him highly enough." Helen S - Spanish GCSE

I am currently a business lecture at UCB , however, I have experience of teaching primary, secondary, 11 plus and assignment support at HE level. Teaching has always been a passion and I am extremely dedicated to my job role. I enjoy all types of teaching and have taught all ages and in all types of environments. Alongside teaching English, maths, and science, etc, I also like to focus on the child’s holistic development which I believe is pivotal. I also do private tutoring online on one to one basis and group sessions. I like to teach my children through joyful interaction which assists them in reaching their full potential and achieving above and beyond their level of expectations. I have seen dramatic improvements from children who started off with very little or no English-speaking skills at all in becoming the highest achievers, furthermore, receiving recognition and awards in their educational institutions. I am very soft-hearted towards the children I teach, nevertheless, this does not mean that they can get away with not completing their studies. I am extremely flexible and can easily adapt quickly to new situations. You will find me highly empathic towards the children and very understanding, regardless of their age. All people big or small should be treated with the utmost respect. I do my best to dedicate my spare time to supporting charity events, group talks, and teaching children.

These were, in his own words, "the best years of my life, with a learning experience I'm keen to share." Testimonials “The amount of history and your ability to create a timeline in order to help me learn the syllabus, although (it) may seem like common sense, makes the course much easier to understand thanks to you.” Andreas (A-Level Politics student) “Maxim tutored our son regularly throughout his A level Politics course. He was awarded an A* in his exam. Maxim has extensive background knowledge about the subject, exam technique and offers patience and persistence. I am a graduate from Imperial College London and Westminster School with a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering MEng and have undertaken research at Imperial College London in the fields of green hydrogen and thermofluids. I also proofread scholarly articles and research journal papers for institutions such as ETH Zurich and Imperial College London. I have tutored for approximately 5500 hours over eight years and during this period I have helped over fifty students gain entry to higher education, that are currently studying STEM subjects at top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College. The vast majority have obtained A*s and As at A-Level. I also tutor several degree level students, five of which have just been awarded First Class and Upper Second Class honours in their respective subjects. I find the process of improving a student’s understanding very rewarding and focus on a wholesome learning experience, always inviting my students to ask questions and attempt problems by themselves before I explain a solution and subsequently work through similar problems step-by-step until the content is grasped. The main emphasis in my lessons is to develop sound conceptual understanding, followed by fluency in answering practise questions, thus targeting excellent performance in exams. I also offer advice on personal statements and help with interview and admission test preparation, and am at your disposal throughout the week for any phone calls about homework problems, university applications, careers, and so on. All this experience throughout has kept me aware of the challenges young learners face, the kindness, understanding, and dedication that lies in a good teacher, and the importance of tailoring communication and teaching styles to the needs of the particular student. On that note, finding a tutor who fits well with your requirements is never easy so do reach out to me for a short and free video chat so I can answer any questions you might have. In my spare time I hike and compose music for film (I also teach music). Instruments that I play include cello, piano, guitar, and I also sing. Please see below my qualifications and I look forward to meeting you! 2015: Ten A*s at GCSE and iGCSE 2017: Three A*s at A-Level in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics (100% in five exams) 2022: Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London (Hons)

I am a fully qualified teacher with fifteen years as a private tutor and class teacher in leading London independent schools. I specialise in 7+ and 11+ preparation, offering expert guidance throughout the entire process. I’ve helped students gain entry to Harrow, Winchester, St Paul's, Sussex House, Oundle, Bancroft, Downe House, Latymer, UCS, and Highgate. My experience covers a wide range of situations—from intensive, last-minute preparation to transforming underperforming students into successful candidates for their target schools. I’ve also traveled the world on residential placements during school holidays with high-profile clients in France, Russia, Spain, and Africa. I believe learning should be both inspiring and target-driven, so my lessons are engaging, and rigorous. I also aim to build lasting confidence, empowering students and celebrating their progress. That means teaching proper lessons, not just relying on past exam papers. Beyond tutoring, I work as a journalist, producing multimedia content for leading national and international publications including BBC, The Economist, The Washington Post, Associated Press, The Atlantic, Reuters, The Telegraph, and the British Journal of Photography among many others.

How do I prepare my child for the Common Entrance?

The 11+ Common Entrance exam can be daunting for children and their families, as it's one of the first times they'll undergo a real timed assessment. It's better to over-prepare than under-prepare when it comes to the 11+ exams. Make sure your child is confident on all the content and has practiced in exam conditions so they're able to manage their time properly on the day. Whilst being prepared is important, you don't want your child stressing over the exam, so it's important to take frequent breaks and make revision fun with rewards and snacks. Your 11 plus tutor will guide you on all necessary techniques.

What is the 11 plus Common Entrance?

The 11 plus Common Entrance assessments are the exams required to get into specific secondary schools. Children will take these entrance exams in Year 6 to determine their place at senior independent schools. The 11 plus Common Entrance exams will assess children on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics. The 11 plus tests are designed to assess children's academic potential. They will often be the first proper exams your child has sat so enlisting the help of an 11 plus tutor is a good idea.

Why Tutor House tutors?

Our tutors have years of experience helping students prepare for the Common Entrance exams and have a track record of success in helping students get into top secondary schools. Preparing for the 11 plus can be tough, but our tutors are here to support you every step of the way.

Are you thinking about getting a 11+ or 13+ Common Entrance tutor?

Common Entrance preparation is very important, it's key to take at least a year preparing for the entrance tests. Tutor House can help with every step of the 11+ and 13+ tests. With a Common Entrance tutor, your child can get access to Common Entrance past papers and gain confidence in their own revision and exam technique.

Common Entrance exams and the preparation for those exams can be a minefield. Parents should check the open days for the schools that they wish to apply to and endeavour to visit the schools and listen to the Headteachers talk. This will enable them to get a good overview and a feel for the school and help them decide if this place would suit their child's’ personality and academic ability. (We offer a personalised service for parents who would like the expert advice of one of our experienced tutors). Most schools have a selection procedure that can be very competitive.

Getting the right support for your child for their 11 plus or 13 plus Common Entrance exam is vital to make sure your child gets accepted into the top secondary school of their choice. Whether your child needs to boost their grades significantly or needs that extra bit of support coming up to the big day, Tutor House can provide you with top-quality 11 plus and 13 plus tutors to get your child the results they both want and need. Our tutors are well used to preparing children for the next step in their education making sure their students are confident in all topics covered in both the 11 plus and 13 plus Common Entrance exams. These exams set your children up for the rest of their education, therefore, at this stage, it’s so important to consider whether your child would benefit from the support and teaching from an experienced 11 plus or 13 plus tutor.

At Tutor House, we provide both online and in-person one-on-one tutoring sessions and pride ourselves on the high quality and experience of our 11 plus and 13 plus tutors.
