Hello everyone! I am Anna and thank you for clicking into my profile. I am an experienced piano and singing tutor. I am from Hong Kong, fluent in English and Mandarin while Cantonese is my mother tongue. Piano: My students are from 4 years old to adult, elementary level to ABRSM grade 8. I teach students about score reading skill, technique, aural and musicianship. Apart from teaching musical elements, I aim to guide them in feeling the beauty of music and enjoying playing music, then help students with their confidence. Singing: I have the experience of teaching students from 4-15 years old, in preparing ABRSM exam and competitions. I did vocal coaching with students in the 71st Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, they all obtained highly satisfactory results. For teaching singing, I emphasis on aural and musicianship skills through playing games with students. My bio: Anna Hoi Ching Chiu obtained the Licentiate of Trinity College, London (LTCL) in Piano Performance and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music from Hong Kong Baptist University, studying with Chan Sham Siu Wai Sylvia. Recently graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a Master of Performance in Piano Accompaniment, Anna studied under the tutelage of David Jones. She has participated in masterclasses given by Malcom Martineau, John Mark Ainsley, James Baillieu, Julius Drake, Helen Cha and Amy Sze. Anna was selected as one of the Leeds Lieder Young Artists 2018 and performed at the Breakfast Concerts. She won the Piano Prize in the 2018 Chris Petty English Song Competition and has participated in events such as a Claude Debussy Mélodies Workshop as part of the RNCM Debussy Centenary Conference and a Melofonetica Workshop. She has participated in recitals at St. Ann’s Church, Manchester, and, as a member of RNCM Songsters, she took part in the 2018 Day of Song and 2017 Open Day. She was the pianist for the concert Boulanger’s Legacy (RNCM Chamber Choir, conducted by Stuart Overington) in the RNCM 2018 Chamber Music Festival; pianist for Look at the World with John Rutter (concert, singing day and conducting masterclass, conducted and led by John Rutter); worked with the RNCM Chamber Choir in preparation for their performance of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion in 2017; pianist for Les Misérables (Christopher Cheng and the Hong Kong Youth Choir) in 2014. Anna is very grateful for the support of the Milton Waring Award for her study at RNCM in 2018. Anna is also enthusiast in singing especially in various choirs. Obtained ABRSM grade 8 with distinction under the tutelage of Dr Amy Sze, Anna has joined several choirs in Hong Kong including Hong Kong Youth Choir and SingFest Festival Chorus, and sang under the baton of renowned conductors including John Rutter and Helmuth Rilling. Apart from giving regular performances as a choir member of Hong Kong Youth Choir, she participated in different choral festivals with the choir as well. For example, 2016 Singapore International Choral Festival which the choir won the Category champion (Musica Sacra) with a gold medal and 2018 Taipei International Choral Competition. I am a Glasgow-based musician, composer and sound artist. In 2012 I completed a practice-based PhD in Musical Composition at the University of Aberdeen where my field of research was concerned with impermanence in audio-visual intermedia and headphone-specific composition. My compositional output often includes collaborations with artists of disciplines different from my own, including dance, theatre, film and web design. I have taught music composition, music technology, and orchestration at the University of Aberdeen and Stevenson College, Edinburgh. Since early 2016 I have worked as one half of the Gaelic ambient electronica duo, WHɎTE with singer-songwriter Alasdair Whyte. Our acclaimed debut album, 'Fairich', was released in 2016 and has received positive reviews and regular national and international radio airplay. Our audio-visual stage show, 'Fairich: Live' was selected as part of the Made in Scotland Showcase for Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017. We have just released our second album, 'Tairm'. I currently teach piano to several young people at Rookie Rockstars Music School three days a week in Kirkintilloch and compose for piano in my spare time.

I have taught through the pop and rock guitar syllabus from grades 1-8 and enjoy encouraging students to craft their own style. I specialise in the blues/rock/jazz styles and am an experienced session musician having worked in a number of studios including Abbey Road. I am also a keen writer and like to encourage creativity in a student, having specialised in improvisation whilst I studied a Bachelor of Music at Goldsmiths University. I have also worked with Wolverhampton council, assisting and leading pop and rock workshops with ZIP Rock music. Teaching a summer school workshop over a number of months between 2015-2016. This taught me the skills to work with groups of students, working on their abilities to play a perform together. I'm friendly and easy to get along with. I have been working with students, teaching music and English for over three years. I love helping a student progress and work towards their own personal goals. This is at the centre of my teaching style, making the lessons as much about the student as possible. Alongside this I gig regularly and play in a number of bands. This is my passion and something I always hope to pass on to students, encouraging them to go out into the world and play music!

I Began studying music at the age of 8, I’ve started first with classical music achieving a Piano Bachelor with the highest marks of the session. During my studies besides Classical Music I've been focusing my interest and enthusiasm on jazz music. Until today I've worked as Classical and jazz Pianist, composer and session musician in Europe, USA and UK. I’ve always been teaching privately classical and jazz music, Theory, Harmony, composition and improvisation. I’ve started teaching to my students my own idea of music and my personal approach with the instrument, trying always to encourage and stimulate their own musical unicity as I have done and I still do with myself. I believe that any teacher must have a specific approach with students in order to analyse, investigate, focus and then just guide their personal attitude for the music. I believe that everyone has this attitude. It’s in our decision, desire, willingness and passion to find it in order to express without any type of constriction.

I have recently graduated from Durham University with first class honours in Chemistry. Throughout my school career and university, I have had a passion for science and mathematics. At school I belonged to the Chemistry Society, which probed topics beyond the A level syllabus. This allowed me to strengthen my understanding of Chemistry and fuel my excitement to study the subject at university. During university I developed a strong interest in Organic Chemistry and oncology, which encouraged me to focus my dissertation on organic fluorinated reagents used to inhibit the proliferation of cancerous cells. Outside of Chemistry I enjoy playing the piano and learning new compositions from some of my favourite composers. During my three years at Durham University I have tutored individuals and small groups A-level Chemistry & Mathematics across AQA, EdExcel and OCR exam boards. I believe in order to achieve the desired result, it is crucial to underpin the fundamental concepts of what you are studying. With a strong foundation, you can explore more complex ideas and extend your understanding. When it comes to chemistry and mathematics, capitalising on the core concepts is crucial to applying yourself in exam situations and successfully obtaining those extra marks. My lessons will focus on building that strong foundation and subsequently targeting exam technique and applications.

In 2012, I decided to go into the classroom full-time and studied a PGCE at Middlesex University. This course and the classroom experiences on it enabled me to become far more organised in my lesson planning, marking and more in tune with a child’s needs. Subsequent to this course, I worked in secondary schools as a music teacher, establishing good routines to help with pupil learning and managing my own workload. I developed interesting and accessible schemes of work that differentiated to all styles of learning through good classroom resources as well as visual, audio and kinaesthetic explanations. I started my tutoring experience 10 years ago in 2008 when I set up my own guitar tuition business. This involved taking on pupils mostly of primary and secondary school ages for private guitar lessons. Some were complete beginners and others had transferred from a different guitar teacher. During this time I also worked as a visiting guitar teacher in primary and secondary schools. These 20-minute lessons were mostly of small groups of 4/5 pupils, learning together but differentiating to their needs as some progressed faster than others. I am definitely a stickler for manners. I expect high standards of behaviour from my pupils at all times. In the classroom, I ask my pupils to raise hands when asking questions and to not shout out or talk over other classmates when they have waited patiently to speak. The use of ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ is also compulsory. These routines that I have set in place allow lessons to have a respectful atmosphere, which is hugely beneficial to learning. I thoroughly believe that good manners are key for the adjustment of a child becoming an adult. I believe that these small modifications to a child’s upbringing have massive implications in their grown up lives. These high expectations of behaviour are mixed in with a positive approach to learning. Pupils are rightfully praised and rewarded when they work hard and achieve well based on their abilities. I find that humour in the classroom goes a long way in motivating a child to learn as well as bringing a mutual respect for one another. This element of humour and light-heartedness is truly essential in building rapport within the learning dynamic. I would describe my personality as easy going. I’m comfortable and totally at ease in all types of company. Friends have remarked that I am always good to have around in social situations as I can converse with people from all walks of life, making them feel instantly at ease. I feel I am quite considerate and respectful in any social occasion. It is in my capacity as a private guitar teacher that I have gained the most satisfaction and wish to extend this role into academic learning. This role has allowed me into private homes to develop a child’s musical expertise as well as feeling welcomed and valued by the family in the role that I provide. These guitar lessons are hugely different from those of the classroom. The perspective has a much more intimate approach to music allowing for to really isolate the pupil’s needs. These lessons can also be punctuated by conversations on music or life in general. These can include social or school problems, or sometimes they enjoy the point of view and ideas of an adult who is not a schoolteacher or family member. Just talking to someone younger than their parents who they see on a weekly basis can be a therapeutic experience for them. I enjoy putting their concerns at ease through simple explanations and laughter, promoting good behaviour and respect. I believe myself to be a good role model in this environment and take great pride, feeling very passionate about the positive guidance that I am able to give. I believe I can be an excellent tutor to your child in all aspects of their development.

Having been awarded a full music and academic scholarship to Harrow School, I understand the benefits that a great education can provide. I believe that this has been the main driving force behind becoming a teacher, so that I could help inspire others to stretch themselves further than they may have previously considered was in their ‘potential’. I have recently taught maths at a state school in Brent for four years and have enjoyed being part of the development and positive change within my school. I completed the Teach First Leadership Development programme having graduated with a 2:1 in Physics and Philosophy in 2013; and have worked my way through leadership positions at the school. I became Key Stage 5 Coordinator during my year as a Newly Qualified Teacher and after two years was promoted to Lead Practitioner in charge of gifted and able students. My responsibilities have included identifying, tracking and stretching the most able students throughout the school, as well as running whole school training sessions for staff on appropriate strategies to challenge students in the classroom. As lead practitioner in mathematics, I have mentored and coached beginner teachers to support teachers within my department. I have seen the school develop, from the difficulties when it had just had its Ofsted visit in June 2013, placing it into the category of ‘special measures’, through to its more recent challenges, having achieved the Ofsted rating of 'Good', three and a half years later. I feel connected to the movement to change student outcomes for the better, and would like to explore the possibilities for improving student outcomes at a more individualistic level, given the freedom to tutor. Within the last three years I have made considerable improvement to the percentage of A/A* grades achieved at GCSE within the school, including half of my students obtaining a Grade 8 and 9 in the most recent new specimen GCSE examination from June 2017. I also created a bespoke pathway for students with an eagerness to succeed in Mathematics, by introducing the AQA Further Mathematics and OCR Additional Mathematics courses. I taught these courses in addition to a full teacher's timetable for three years and have seen several students achieve A^ (A* with distinction in AQA) - an absolutely formidable result. I have also been tutoring an A-level student from Highgate school since February 2017 – helping him complete his A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I have been looking to tutor more this year having first noticed the high levels of progress that were possible at such a focused one-to-one level. The ease with which you can build relationships with students as their tutor makes tutoring an ideal platform to motivate and guide students through difficult topics. I had found these interactions with the many 'lightbulb' moments that come from a tutoring session to be a welcome break from classroom management, and wish to pursue this further.

I've been tutoring on-and-off for the last seven years across a wide range of ages, subjects, and abilities. This has included in-person and online teaching, and I am happy to facilitate either depending on your requirements. I have a 100% satisfaction rating on two of the largest tutoring websites, and work hard to ensure that I tailor lessons to the specific needs of each student. Alongside private tutoring, I am currently working at two schools teaching Maths and English to students between the ages of 13 and 16. I specialise and work extensively with 11+ and 13+ common entrance students with a near impeccable track record. I specialise in exam preparation, English, Philosophy, Music, and History, as well as pre-College Maths and Science. I have experience in working with a wide range of age groups—from primary school through to degree level—, and enjoy the challenges which come with each. I have assisted with several University, College, and Sixth Form applications, including personal statements, essay advice, and general tips. Most recently, I was employed by a local school to help teach students who are struggling. This has been a particularly rewarding experience, and has shown first-hand the difference that patient, friendly, and individually-tailored tuition can make in someone's life.
