[Hello! My teaching schedule is fully booked for this term (up until January 2022). If you are interested in taking lessons with me, please contact me around early January 2022 to make bookings for next year!] Hi, I am Celene or you can call me Jia Yin. I am a third year PhD student in Applied Mathematics at the University of Nottingham. My PhD focuses on the numerical and asymptotic analysis of nonlocal travelling wave equations. I graduated with First-class Honours in Msc in Applied Mathematics the University of Manchester. I am passionate about Mathematics and I have always found great joy in building students’ confidence in the subject through my passion and knowledge. I have been a tutor for over seven years. I have teaching experience with all age groups and abilities, including students who are in primary school years, all the way up to University students, both in person and online. In 2021, I received a Postgraduate Teaching Assistant Award from the University of Nottingham for the demonstrating work I have done in the School of Mathematical Sciences. My classes range from one-to-one up to one-to-fifty ratio. One of the best feelings throughout my years of tutoring was not only helping my students succeed in their exams, but also being able to inspire them to enjoy Maths themselves as they gained confidence in the subject. I am a very engaging and enthusiastic tutor who is devoted to ensuring that you/your child receives the best quality in understanding this subject. I specifically tackle your weaknesses and turn them into your strengths so you can achieve your full potential! So, whether you are a student who needs that final push for an upcoming exam or has always found Maths confusing, I truly believe I am the one to help! I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your best! Here are some examples of my teaching accomplishments: - Helped a Year 6 student to pass her SAT for the very first time. - Assisted a Year 7 student in moving up her Maths set in school. - Improved the grades of a year 8 student from 60% to 80% in four months. - Improved the class test results of an AS Maths student from 37% (failed) to 65% (B) after 9 lessons. My fees: KS3 and below: £30 /hour KS4 : £35 / hour A-levels or Foundation or IB: £40 / hour University levels: £45 / hour Methodology: Everyone learns best at a different pace so I will tailor our one-to-one tutoring sessions specifically for you. In our first discussion I like to find out about your ability, what areas and skills you would like to work on, and what time frame and goals you have in mind. Or if I you prefer, I can test you on a number of topics to understand which areas you need extra support with. From this I can begin to come up with a comprehensive plan for my first few lessons, where I will explain the topics by covering some examples before letting you to try on a range of questions with increasing difficulty. This would then be followed by tackling an exam question on the topic when you feel more confident. I will also include review sessions in each tutorial, where I will ask a few questions based on previous topics we covered. After all, Maths isn’t about memory, it’s practice, practice, practice! My personal style of teaching is focused on engaging students through discussion and questions throughout the session to help students become more inquisitive and engaged with their studies. My priority is to make you feel comfortable asking anything no matter how simple it might be just to ensure complete understanding of what is being taught or reviewed.

Over my A-levels and gap year I worked face-to-face with many GCSE maths students (and a few younger) and lots of beginner, up to grade 5, piano students. I aim to be as enthusiastic and relatable as possible, as these subjects are the things I enjoy most and would love to see young people enjoy them as well, not just attempt to stay afloat. My absolute favorite parts of my subjects are algebra, which understandably is a struggling point for many young people, and in regards to music, that of musical theory and history, which I do try to incorporate a little of in my instrumental lessons as well. I also aim to help students with learning disabilities to overcome challenges as a result, and also to help them understand and incorporate the benefits of their neurodiversity. I myself have dyslexia, and am currently studying aspects of how dyslexics learn and memorize music. I have taught several students with dyslexia (and other learning disabilities), and hope to share strategies for coping with it, but also how it can actually help students in other aspects of education and life. My teaching style Maths - Firstly, every student is different, so in the first session I ask what the student struggles with the most, what they enjoy and how they prefer to learn (visually, practically, through theory or an example first etc). If they’re not too sure, I work through a range of questions with them, from a broad range of topics to establish their strengths, weaknesses and how they engage with problems. In subsequent lessons I prepare a topic to cover (or part of one), working through the theory by building up from important basics up to more complex questions and problem solving, working through questions together and then by themselves. I always ask at the beginning of sessions, however, if there is anything they struggled with during the week, at school or in homework, and cover that first if possible. If it is a bigger issue, meaning the basics of the topic are not yet understood, I plan a full lesson for a subsequent session. I have worked with many maths students, particularly at KS3 and GCSE level, and found this layout to be very successful (for both results and confidence in mathematical problem solving) and also encourages openness between myself and the student in terms of asking questions, discussing topics they find complex, and speaking up when they don’t understand something. In my experience, many students struggle with the principles of algebra and fractions, which have been rushed through when they were younger but form the basis of a lot of higher level maths. Once these topics are covered thoroughly, many students, I have found, are able to comprehend the rest of the course with considerably more ease. It was not too long ago that I sat these examinations myself, so I’m very familiar with what the exams include and how they expect the questions to be answered - of course every school and exam board is slightly different so I keep up to date with changes in exam board specifications. For younger students I ask to see if there is a year curriculum that has been handed out to the students, which there usually is, and if not we work through all the standard topics which are pretty much universal. Music - All lessons are different depending on the standard of the student and how they respond to different teaching methods. For beginners, I incorporate learning music notation as well as some learning by ear. As they grow with confidence with the notes and basic sight-reading and aural skills, I split the lessons into a fun warm up, where we might play through a short piece or they show me something they’ve enjoyed practicing that week, then some technical skills, such as scales, arpeggios, breath control etc, then work on pieces they’re learning, then finally a play through to finish and recap what we’ve learned that session. This lesson layout I generally keep with for more advanced students as well, although this depends on what they are working toward, be it exams, a recital, solo or group performance etc. I do not necessarily expect all my students to take ABRSM or other music exams if they do not want to, as it is not always helpful to the students in terms of what they want to be learning, and is in no way necessary. Often students want to do them, and I will have a conversation with parents and the student to establish what is best for them. I more encourage performances and finding what they love. The exams can be useful for UCAS and general experience, so I do not discourage taking them and am very familiar with the layout, having taken many and accompanied a few myself. I have taught from beginners, both children and adults, through to more advanced students performing regularly and guided them through exams, performance techniques, and some people starting to explore composition for their instrument. Some of the biggest difficulties that arise are students not being able to read music, which is imperative for exams and playing in (particularly classical and jazz) ensembles, so experience has taught me to really cover some theoretical and technical aspects every lesson, as well as the practical side. Most importantly I want to ensure my students engage with their studies in a positive way, and develop their own interests within the subject.

Hello students! My name is Becky 😊. I have over ten years of teaching experience and have taught English and French to students all over the world 🌎 - everywhere from the UK and France, to China and Indonesia! I teach both children and adults, some children as young as two-years-old, and some adults too old to reveal their age to me! I specialise in teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) with a primary focus on conversation and confidence building. I also assist students with their IELTS Speaking exams. It doesn’t matter what your current level is in a language, whether you are just starting, have some experience already or are nearly fluent, we can always make progress together! I grew up and was educated in the UK, then went on to study French Studies at the University of London Institute in Paris. I have travelled all my life and I am always interested to meet new students and discover new cultures. I find it fascinating how language can shape a culture - and how culture can shape a language! I love to write, sing, dance, make music, explore nature and learn new languages. I like to personally maintain the perspective of a language student as this helps me to continuously improve my teaching. I truly love languages and I am currently learning and practising Mandarin every day! I am super friendly and easygoing, supportive and helpful. Most importantly, I want you to feel happy! Learning a language is all about communication and exchange, so it's really important to feel comfortable while you are learning and developing. So what have I learnt through teaching hundreds of students? That the best way to learn is to relax and have fun! In our lessons, we will work together to build your confidence with patience and laughter. I always encourage a “growth mindset” because this approach helps you to enjoy every challenge and do your best! I hope to meet you in class soon! 👋

Hello, my name is Ming. I'm originally from Taiwan, grew up in the US, but have lived in the UK for over 10 years. I completed my PhD in Molecular Medicine at Imperial College London, funded by AstraZeneca. I then took up a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge under the Department of Medicine followed by a fellowship in the Department of Oncology at the University of Oxford, funded by Cancer Research UK. I am currently a visiting scientist at the Francis Crick Institute in central London as well as a visiting lecturer at Kings College London. I started as a tutor in the USA when I was in high school preparing students for college entrance exams. Since then I have taught undergraduate and masters students at Imperial, conducted research supervision of PhD students at Oxford and Cambridge, and am currently leading tutorials at Kings in immunology for undergrads. When teaching I prefer to allow students to find the solutions to problems themselves by asking probing questions and providing them guidance. I think this better prepares them for university and post-graduate life. Whilst my experiences are geared towards older students, I have also tutored at primary level and feel that I am a good fit for any age range. In addition to my strong biomedical sciences background, I am also an avid violinist, a competitive rower, and am fluent in Mandarin Chinese. I look forward to helping you to achieve your goals. Please feel free to message me with any questions!

I have taught through the pop and rock guitar syllabus from grades 1-8 and enjoy encouraging students to craft their own style. I specialise in the blues/rock/jazz styles and am an experienced session musician having worked in a number of studios including Abbey Road. I am also a keen writer and like to encourage creativity in a student, having specialised in improvisation whilst I studied a Bachelor of Music at Goldsmiths University. I have also worked with Wolverhampton council, assisting and leading pop and rock workshops with ZIP Rock music. Teaching a summer school workshop over a number of months between 2015-2016. This taught me the skills to work with groups of students, working on their abilities to play a perform together. I'm friendly and easy to get along with. I have been working with students, teaching music and English for over three years. I love helping a student progress and work towards their own personal goals. This is at the centre of my teaching style, making the lessons as much about the student as possible. Alongside this I gig regularly and play in a number of bands. This is my passion and something I always hope to pass on to students, encouraging them to go out into the world and play music!

I Began studying music at the age of 8, I’ve started first with classical music achieving a Piano Bachelor with the highest marks of the session. During my studies besides Classical Music I've been focusing my interest and enthusiasm on jazz music. Until today I've worked as Classical and jazz Pianist, composer and session musician in Europe, USA and UK. I’ve always been teaching privately classical and jazz music, Theory, Harmony, composition and improvisation. I’ve started teaching to my students my own idea of music and my personal approach with the instrument, trying always to encourage and stimulate their own musical unicity as I have done and I still do with myself. I believe that any teacher must have a specific approach with students in order to analyse, investigate, focus and then just guide their personal attitude for the music. I believe that everyone has this attitude. It’s in our decision, desire, willingness and passion to find it in order to express without any type of constriction.

Having been awarded a full music and academic scholarship to Harrow School, I understand the benefits that a great education can provide. I believe that this has been the main driving force behind becoming a teacher, so that I could help inspire others to stretch themselves further than they may have previously considered was in their ‘potential’. I have recently taught maths at a state school in Brent for four years and have enjoyed being part of the development and positive change within my school. I completed the Teach First Leadership Development programme having graduated with a 2:1 in Physics and Philosophy in 2013; and have worked my way through leadership positions at the school. I became Key Stage 5 Coordinator during my year as a Newly Qualified Teacher and after two years was promoted to Lead Practitioner in charge of gifted and able students. My responsibilities have included identifying, tracking and stretching the most able students throughout the school, as well as running whole school training sessions for staff on appropriate strategies to challenge students in the classroom. As lead practitioner in mathematics, I have mentored and coached beginner teachers to support teachers within my department. I have seen the school develop, from the difficulties when it had just had its Ofsted visit in June 2013, placing it into the category of ‘special measures’, through to its more recent challenges, having achieved the Ofsted rating of 'Good', three and a half years later. I feel connected to the movement to change student outcomes for the better, and would like to explore the possibilities for improving student outcomes at a more individualistic level, given the freedom to tutor. Within the last three years I have made considerable improvement to the percentage of A/A* grades achieved at GCSE within the school, including half of my students obtaining a Grade 8 and 9 in the most recent new specimen GCSE examination from June 2017. I also created a bespoke pathway for students with an eagerness to succeed in Mathematics, by introducing the AQA Further Mathematics and OCR Additional Mathematics courses. I taught these courses in addition to a full teacher's timetable for three years and have seen several students achieve A^ (A* with distinction in AQA) - an absolutely formidable result. I have also been tutoring an A-level student from Highgate school since February 2017 – helping him complete his A-level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. I have been looking to tutor more this year having first noticed the high levels of progress that were possible at such a focused one-to-one level. The ease with which you can build relationships with students as their tutor makes tutoring an ideal platform to motivate and guide students through difficult topics. I had found these interactions with the many 'lightbulb' moments that come from a tutoring session to be a welcome break from classroom management, and wish to pursue this further.

Hi, I am a fourth-year medical student at the University College London and I recently completed an intercalated BSc in Medical Sciences with Medical Anthropology. I have a strong background in Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and have a deep understanding of the medical school application process. Having taken Philosophy at AS Level and Medical Anthropology as an intercalated BSc, I hold a solid foundation in essay writing and critical thinking. In my second and third years of university, I worked as a Target Medicine mentor, mentoring A Level students from disadvantaged backgrounds on their medical school applications. Topics covered included UKCat, BMAT, personal statement writing and mock interview preparation. I ensured that my mentees understood how to work tactically in order to achieve the required A Level results and how to aim for desired outcomes whilst maintaining realistic expectations. When students approached me with queries in person or via email, I enjoyed being very meticulous and encouraging with the advice that I offered in order that they felt supported during their most stressful times at school. I have experience teaching English as a foreign language to a range of age groups. A few years ago, I spent several months in Hong Kong tutoring English to primary school children on a one-to-one or group basis. I also assisted with the provision of recreational activities as I recognised the importance of making learning an enjoyable experience. Later, I taught English to international students through a Church programme and to elderly people at a Chinese elderly centre in Manchester. I have volunteered with disabled high school students as an activity leader with KEEN London and provided support to residents diagnosed with moderate to severe mental health problems at various charities such as the Single Homeless Project and Olallo House. Music is a passion of mine; I attended the junior department of the Royal Northern College of Music during high school and achieved Grade 8 in both the piano and the violin at the age of 14. I am a very enthusiastic teacher and enjoy sharing my interest with others. Thank you for reading this and I hope to hear from you soon!

I was educated at Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Music in London. At Secondary School I specialized in Science and Maths and have 2 A*s and an A at A-level as well as 10A*s at GCSE. I have 10 years of academic tutoring experience in Maths, Science, English, History and Music from Primary through to GCSE including Common Entrance. I have worked as a mentor giving career advice to 15-18 year olds as well as providing Oxbridge interview preparation. In addition I have tutored Music A-level, helped with degree-level assignments, and have taught cello and piano for over 10 years both privately and in schools. I have several years experience in working with autistic and disabled children as a charity worker with Cambridge Joint Play Schemes, as well as from tutoring private clients. I am also a fully qualified Functional Movement Specialist (health and fitness). As a tutor I am flexible in my approach towards each student. Depending on their learning style and strengths and weaknesses in each subject area, I employ a variety of methods to facilitate learning, memorization and a critical thinking approach. I regularly give students opportunities to summarize what they have learnt and test their understanding and memorization of information, in order to foster deeper learning and memorization. I believe strongly that a positive, encouraging and supportive tutoring approach is critical to a students success and also like to make some time to get to know each student and chat generally about their interests.
