I am a fully qualified teacher with 20 years of experience teaching English at KS3, 4 and 5 level, both in the state and independent sector. I am also a mother of three children who are now all grown up and on their way to `bigger` things, but I understand the concerns parents may have about the progress of their children. At school, in a class of 15 to 30, it is very difficult for the teacher to give each pupil the individual attention they need and deserve. This is what I enjoy about tutoring: it is 100% child focused. I offer tutoring on a one-to-one basis at your home or in the small classroom I have at my own house. I specialise in tutoring for the 11+ entrance exams as well as specific English tuition up to GCSE level. I am also an official GCSE exam marker for AQA English and as such have an in-depth understanding of how the exam board awards marks. I have gained experience in administering the 11+ entrance exams in the independent school I worked at, as well as marking the papers. With regards to the 11+ preparation, I cover all areas: Maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Tutoring allows me to personalise all the planning and teaching to the needs of the young people I am working with. After an initial assessment, I can identify where the areas of strength and areas of development lie. I then tailor the lessons precisely to the needs of the pupil. By working on the areas of development, it is very clear to see where there is progress and parents will be informed and kept up to date. My approach is friendly and pupils do not feel `stressed` in my presence. Parents often comment that their children enjoy the lessons and I ensure that my pupils receive plenty of praise so they really feel a sense of achievement. I am experienced in teaching and marking various exam boards, including IGCSEs: AQA, Edexcel, CIE. I have a proven track record of enabling pupils to achieve outstanding results, exceeding their predicted potential.I have achieved success as a Head of Department and also as a Director of Teaching and Learning, when I empowered other teachers to be successful classroom practitioners. I'm a Qualified Primary Teacher with experience in teaching in different year groups. Being a teacher has made me realise the immense gap that exists between different children in one class and the need for children to have one-to-one attention from a teacher, to make great progress. Therefore I decided to focus on tutoring so I can ensure I can make a great impact on an individual's life. I still remember my teachers and how they contributed to my thirst for knowledge, which led me to complete my Bachelor's degree in Law and a Master's degree in Public International Law. My interest in teaching was first sparked when I volunteered at the Shire Foundation in London, a charitable organisation, focused on improving educational standards for deprived communities. At the Foundation, I taught English to adults and tutored young children on a one-to-one basis within the subjects of English and Maths. As a result of this experience, I decided to do the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA). This was an intensive course that provided me with the essential teaching pedagogical knowledge and it was a hands-on teaching experience which strengthened my classroom confidence. I have also learned the value of thorough lesson planning which has proven essential in my teaching. Upon completion, I became a qualified teacher of English as a second language (ESL) and also gained the CFE qualification: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. I carried on to study for my PGCE and completed this successfully as I began my teaching into mainstream schools. This is where I found the need for children to get attention and specialised focus from their teachers, which teachers cannot provide in classes with 30 children. I take great pride in creating original tasks that engage and motivate students to actively participate in lessons. 100% active participation is something that I expect from all my students, all the time. In addition to this, I set high expectations for students, because research has shown, high expectations are a driver of high academic achievement. I enjoy travelling, learning about different cultures and trying out new experiences. Exercising is another hobby of mine and I think it is important to take care of the body as well as the mind.

I then pre-plan my lessons to cover these topics in turn and through the use of tailor-made resources to ensure they are interactive and encourage active learning. At the beginning and end of each lesson, I use practice questions to gauge understanding of the topic and monitor progress. I review progress with students and parents and give advice on practical strategies to support learners at home. I do my best to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable and keen to interact and ask questions.
