I attempt to gauge what the students needs and satisfy that need. For example, if maths is difficult for them, I focus on that topic more.
I provide homework to students on a daily bais usually. I also have periodic assessments. I expect the students to do their home work. I expect students to undertake independent study appropriate to their level. I want students to pay attention during the session and be enthusiastic about learning the subject.
Students should prepare well for their tests needless to say. I expect students to be punctual; if unable to notify me in advance. Needless, to say, if they are absent due to illness, for example, have the courtesy to inform me in advance.

• Praise. There is nothing more reassuring than knowing that you are progressing and that means giving lots of praise when it is due. I am a firm believer that confidence leads to better academic performance.
• Listen. This needs no explanation; it's important for me to understand where the student is academically so I can progress through the lesson accordingly.
• Make learning interesting. Using real world examples or applying a method to a scenario gives the material more context and often it becomes more understandable.
