Should I study Greek at University?
Undergraduates and postgraduates will usually study Greek at university as part of a Classics degree or a Modern Languages degree. Both Modern and Ancient Greek are excellent choices for degree study. Modern Greek can be combined with other languages such as Italian, Spanish and French. Ancient Greek will normally fit alongside Latin, classical civilisation and other classics studies.
What can you do with a degree in Greek?
If you're studying Greek as part of a Classics degree, there are lots of areas you could go into after uni. The study of Ancient Greek could lead you into journalism, curation, conservation, translation or research. If you specialise in Greek mythology, you might like to pursue this further as an archivist, historian or writer. A degree in Classics / Classical Studies will set you up well with strong written and verbal communication skills and researching abilities.

Why study Greek at University? Universities will typically offer degrees in Modern Greek, which can also be combined with other modern languages or sometimes other subjects as joint honours degrees. Or they will offer degrees in Classical Greek / Ancient Greek, which is often combined with subjects such as Latin or is taught as part of a Classics degree.
Learning a contemporary language equips students with highly employable skills and can be extremely useful for those who want to work or study abroad. Studying an ancient language like Classical Greek is also very impressive, as it shows strong research skills and gives students a broad understanding of history, society and how ancient civilisations have impacted modern democracies.
Students will often benefit from the help of a private Greek tutor. Learning a language, whether modern or classical, requires practice, regular lessons and guidance. With an online tutor, students receive 1-1 lesson time, something which is a rarity whilst at University. During tutor lessons, you can ask for more information on any topics which you didn't fully grasp during seminars or lectures and ensure you understand them fully.
