Soon after winning an academic scholarship to Eton College, I decided I wanted to study Classics at university. Is it worth doing Latin A Level?

Latin A Level is definitely a subject worth doing. It's particularly relevant for students hoping to study History, Classics, Languages or Ancient Civilisations at university. It's also highly regarded by admissions teams as it's a difficult language to learn, so having an A Level in Latin will stand you in good stead for any course application.

What do you learn in Latin?

Latin is the study of language but also of ancient civilisations. You'll learn Latin vocabulary, grammar, declensions and spellings, but you'll also learn about the history of Latin. It's an ancient language and one that isn't spoken by modern societies, however Latin has been the building block for many of the languages we do speak today including Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese. When you learn Latin, you're also learning about these modern languages and their origins.

How hard is Latin A Level?

Latin A Level is hard in the sense that the grammar is complex and there's a lot of rules to memorise.
