After graduating from Oxford University with a high 2:1 in Classics I immediately became a teacher as I had felt for a long time that I wanted to infuse others with the same enthusiasm for the subject I had come to love. I have taught in a wide range of schools (all independent) and was the Head of Classics (and Head of Year 9) of Magdalen College School, Oxford from 2014 to 2021 - one of the most academically successful schools in the country. I have taught pupils from Year 6 to Year 13 and have prepared a large number of students for University applications (with a good number of these applying for Oxbridge); I also created and was in charge of the Sixth Form academic extension group at a previous school, a group which aimed at encouraging students to approach their Sixth Form studies in an all-embracing, excited, and forward-looking way - I was particularly interested in unleashing the inner geek in all my charges, no matter what subject area they were aiming at. While I have taught and learnt at institutions that are self-professedly 'academic', I have hugely enjoyed teaching at schools which have large academic ranges as well; I love trying to find new and interesting ways of covering topics, aiming to help every individual become more confident in the particular subject area being looked at. It is those who have found difficulties with the complexity of their studies that I have always been drawn towards - there is nothing more rewarding than to know that you have created for a student the conditions for growth of understanding and knowledge in an area that had previously felt unattainable. It has also been a huge privilege to have taught a wide range of classical subjects (Latin, Classical Greek, Ancient History, and Classical Civilisation) in my career to date but it is the ancient languages that were (and continue to be) my first academic passion. That said, the experience I have in the other key areas of classical study have helped me broaden the minds of those I have taught and it is rare that a lesson goes by without some investigation beyond the languages happening: into the world of the Romans and Greeks that surround and continue to live in the texts we are lucky enough to have access to. I was also in charge of the Oxbridge applications process at a previous school for seven years and, in that time, assisted about one hundred students, helping them write their personal statements and prepare themselves for interview over the course of a two-year programme that I had devised.
