I am a highly experienced tutor with over 7 years experience teaching and tutoring in private and public schools, as well as privately and online, in the UK, France and Spain. I am familiar with all major exam boards, and have been frequently noted for the passion and rigor with which I introduce and teach my subjects. I am a firm believer in the idea that education should be available to all, and that there is is student without potential. I thus make a point to help the student see the attraction of the subject. My methodology is focused on ensuring immersion in both the more theoretical and abstract principles of the subect and their application through practice and concrete examples. I aim to get the student applying themselves consistently as soon as possible, keeping a constant eye out for areas for improvement. I studied at the University of Warwick, Sciences Po, and the Sorbonne. I have worked as a teacher, tutor, translator, researcher, as well as business research and charity. I am fluent in 6 languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German. I am also a teacher of Latin and Greek.

I have taught Latin, Ancient Greek, classical studies and English at GCSE, A-level and university level for twenty-five years. I’ve taught beginners up to Common Entrance at prep schools in Surrey and London for fourteen years, and SAT exams for US universities. My students, as well as gaining scholarships to top schools, have gone to Cambridge, Oxford, Bryn Mawr, and top universities. I’m experienced in online tuition (Skype/Facetime/ WhatsApp). I enjoy sharing my love of language, grammar, literature, history, mythology and philosophy. I hope to find quirky ways to give insights into the ancient world and its impact on the present. I particularly love helping students overcome blocks and difficulties to rediscover the joys of language and and the magic of ancient cultures. I have taught English as a Foreign Language in Brazil, Italy and the UK, from beginners to proficiency level, so have a particular awareness of difficulties with second language learning. I teach Creative Writing at University of Portsmouth, and I’ve given workshops in libraries, universities, schools, prisons and theatres. I have also translated ancient and mediaeval texts for academic, legal and medical purposes.

Soon after winning an academic scholarship to Eton College, I decided I wanted to study Classics at university. Whilst reading Classics at Oxford, I began to tutor in Latin and Greek; since then, I have taught both beginners and A Level/IB students and feel comfortable teaching at any level. Other teaching stints include working as an English teacher at a school in Tanzania and at a university in Myanmar. After university, I was an education worker for a year at a successful educational charity called IntoUniversity. My role at IntoUniversity involved running workshops in schools and a homework club for both primary and secondary school students (as well as giving UCAS advice). As such, I have a wide breadth of teaching experience- largely in the Humanities. My own interests are wide-ranging: in particular I love languages, travel and reading. This combination of interests has led me to undertake bike rides around Turkey (in the footsteps of Alexander the Great) and Uzbekistan (through the oasis cities of the Silk Road), and, more recently, a walk through Armenia. As a tutor, I aim to combine academic achievement with a passion for learning which goes above and beyond school curricula.

I have an M.A. with Distinction in European History from King's College London and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and a B.A. in Latin from the University of Oregon in the United States. I have five years' experience tutoring, both one-on-one and in small groups. I've had students of all ages and walks of life, and try always to look for my students' personal connection to a subject that really opens up their passion. I teach Spanish and Latin to all levels including GCSE, A-level, degree and US system. I also teach History, Gov/Pol and Classics. I've taught in schools and also conducted oral assessments and mock exams. I'm originally from the US, but I've lived in a number of places since then. I spent several years in Mexico, where I was a journalist and language teacher. I've worked for many years as a translator and I'm fluent or conversational in five European languages.

I earned my PhD in Classics many years ago, but all the while I have been teaching the subject I have continued to pursue it as a student. I have a great love of the classics. I've previously been the head of the Classics department at Queen's Gate School where I taught all Classical subjects -- Latin, Ancient Greek Ancient History and Classical Civilisation -- at all levels. I also helped students prepare for the Common Entrance examinations in Latin and Ancient Greek. I have tutored students individually over many years, including online in many different subjects including English, History and Philosophy. I walk my dog twice a day and have a keen interest in the sport of horse racing. Whether it's improving your grades or getting the most out of your studies, I'd love to help!

I have 4 years experience of tutoring, coupled with 7 years classroom experience, working in independent schools. An Oxford Classics graduate with a PGCE from Cambridge University, I have taught Latin, Classics, Ancient Greek and English in a number of local independent secondarily schools as well as in private tuition. I love tutoring and developing the pedagogical one-to-one relationships with tutees. I am knowledgeable in my areas of expertise, organised, approachable and patient. I explain complex concepts in a clear and accessible manner, tailoring my approach to each individual student. I make lessons enjoyable and challenging through this approach, setting good examples and ways of working for tutees to emulate as they become gradually more independent with an approach that works for them. I set high standards for my tutees and have a proven successful track record of my tutees achieving the grades they need and want. I am reliable and a good communicator with a range of ages, backgrounds and abilities. I commit time to thoroughly communicating with parents and other clients about the progress and attainment of the tutee. I am also flexible and able to work round tutees' other commitments and schedules. I am easy to contact and aim to respond to enquiries within an hour.

I studied Classics at King’s College Cambridge, where I was awarded a double 1st in Classics. I have several years experience tutoring Latin, Ancient Greek, Classical Civilisation to A-Level, and Maths to GCSE. From 2017-18, I worked as a teacher of Classics at Dulwich College, teaching Latin and Ancient Greek at all ages, on both OCR and Pre-U examination syllabuses. This classroom experience has been invaluable not only in solidifying my knowledge of syllabus requirements, but also in developing a clear and concise teaching method, and the flexibility to explain difficult ideas in a variety of ways. I believe that the best one-to-one tutors create a positive and approachable working environment, and experience tells me this is the best way to achieve high results. I aim to build a friendly atmosphere that allows students to push themselves towards their potential. I know that a key part of developing a student’s self-belief is pin-pointing the best method of learning for the individual, and as such I am always looking for different ways to teach a subject that might help build confidence and understanding - without losing a sense of fun!

I graduated from Oxford University in 2017, where I received my BA in Classics. The primary focus of my degree was Greek and Latin literature, though I took modules on Greek Art & Architecture and on both ancient and modern Philosophy too. I now work as a tutor in London, and have 5 years of experience tutoring students from age 8 to 18. I specialise in teaching Latin, and have worked with students at Common Entrance, GCSE, A-level and Oxbridge Application level. I have tutored English up to GCSE, and at 11+ and Common Entrance level, and non-verbal and verbal reasoning are also subjects I am happy to teach. My aim as a tutor is always to pass on my own enthusiasm for learning to my students, to keep the lessons engaging and interesting, and to tailor the work specifically to the individual.

I am an experienced tutor, with over 10 years of experience. I am passionate about good quality teaching and a strong advocate for education. I enjoy sharing my subject knowledge and helping my students achieving their goal through rigorous work and emotional investment. I have a BA, MA and MSc in History and related subjects (Philosophy, Religious Studies, Cultures) and I am currently completing my PhD in the History of Emotions. As a trained historian, I am able to see the bigger picture, putting pieces together, with the strongest eye for details. Usually, I am excellent in identifying and addressing problems, especially in regards to my students or my classroom environment. My students have described me as a ‘rigorous’ and ‘inspiring’ tutor. I am Italian and I have been educated both in Italy (BA, MSc) and in the UK (MA, PhD). I have a wide, deep, solid knowledge of Humanities, particularly History, Cultural Studies and Religious Studies. I am fluent in English, Italian (mother tongue), Spanish (University level, DELE diploma) and French. I have also studied Ancient Greek and Latin. I can teach a History lesson starting from the etymology of a word, quoting literary texts and primary sources, using several different historiographical approaches. On the contrary, I can teach Spanish and Italian not only focusing on linguistic functions or grammar, but also explaining the meaning and use of the language through the culture and history of Spain and Italy. I would say my teaching approach is Socratic and solidly interdisciplinary. Essentially, I am comfortable teaching any subject in the Humanities. Currently I am working as an Assistant Tutor at the University of Warwick, where I teach a module focused on Early Modern European History, which is my area of expertise. I have experience in planning and delivering lessons, marking assignments, monitoring students' progress, being aware of health and safety as well as pastoral issues related to my students. During the last two years I have also worked for a charity called 'The Brilliant Club', delivering academic style programmes in schools, to promote higher educations for young people with high potentiality but disadvantaged backgrounds. I regularly teach Italians to kids in my local area and, when still residing in Italy, I worked for several years as private tutor for private families, assisting kids aged 7 to 17.

After graduating from Oxford University with a high 2:1 in Classics I immediately became a teacher as I had felt for a long time that I wanted to infuse others with the same enthusiasm for the subject I had come to love. I have taught in a wide range of schools (all independent) and was the Head of Classics (and Head of Year 9) of Magdalen College School, Oxford from 2014 to 2021 - one of the most academically successful schools in the country. I have taught pupils from Year 6 to Year 13 and have prepared a large number of students for University applications (with a good number of these applying for Oxbridge); I also created and was in charge of the Sixth Form academic extension group at a previous school, a group which aimed at encouraging students to approach their Sixth Form studies in an all-embracing, excited, and forward-looking way - I was particularly interested in unleashing the inner geek in all my charges, no matter what subject area they were aiming at. While I have taught and learnt at institutions that are self-professedly 'academic', I have hugely enjoyed teaching at schools which have large academic ranges as well; I love trying to find new and interesting ways of covering topics, aiming to help every individual become more confident in the particular subject area being looked at. It is those who have found difficulties with the complexity of their studies that I have always been drawn towards - there is nothing more rewarding than to know that you have created for a student the conditions for growth of understanding and knowledge in an area that had previously felt unattainable. It has also been a huge privilege to have taught a wide range of classical subjects (Latin, Classical Greek, Ancient History, and Classical Civilisation) in my career to date but it is the ancient languages that were (and continue to be) my first academic passion. The logical beauty and intricacy of the grammar, and the importance of Latin and Greek to the modern world, mean that they have earnt their reputation as key components of an excellent education. That said, the experience I have in the other key areas of classical study have helped me broaden the minds of those I have taught and it is rare that a lesson goes by without some investigation beyond the languages happening: into the world of the Romans and Greeks that surround and continue to live in the texts we are lucky enough to have access to. I was also in charge of the Oxbridge applications process at a previous school for seven years and, in that time, assisted about one hundred students, helping them write their personal statements and prepare themselves for interview over the course of a two-year programme that I had devised. Numbers of application successes went up significantly in my time at the school.

I am a graduate of Cambridge University with a 2:1 in English and over eight years' experience as a tutor. A keen linguist, I also took modules in Latin and Spanish as part of my degree. My subjects, among others, include English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, Latin, Spanish, Drama, Creative Writing, debate practice, and public speaking in general. In addition to general support from pre-GCSE to degree level, I have provided support – both residential and peripatetic – for a number of my students for Common Entrance (including ISEB pre-tests), 7+, 8+, 11+, 13+ (including interview prep), GCSE, AS Level and A Level, for entry into a number of top schools such as Eton, St Paul’s, Westminster, Dulwich, Alleyn’s, St Dunstan’s, Wimbledon, Haberdashers’ Aske’s, and many more. I have also guided them in their preparations to enter into further study, from exam practice to interview practice and personal statements. A number of my pupils have gone on to study at Oxbridge or the Ivy League. I always tailor my lessons to suit the needs and learning style of each student — often making use of fun visual aids (both digital and non-digital) and a very useful system of memory techniques called 'mnemonics'. My philosophy is to engage my pupils, having them play an active role in their learning, and instructing them in as entertaining a manner as possible towards critical and independent thought. My pastimes include after-dinner speaking, and writing and performing comedy for the stage, television and radio. As a result, many of my pupils have professed to enjoy my use of comic, absurd or dramatic examples as a means of invigorating potentially dry topics.

What do you learn in IB Latin?

The IB Diploma programme will give students the opportunity to study classical languages like Latin and Classical Greek. IB students will have the chance to develop their knowledge of the languages and culture of Roman and Ancient Greek societies. Latin and Greek can be studied at standard level (SL) or higher level (HL) as part of the diploma programme; the higher level will require students to develop a deeper knowledge of their chosen classical language.

Does the IB help me get into university?

The IB Diploma programme is an internationally recognised qualification which will stand you in good stead for applying to universities, both in the UK and abroad. The international baccalaureate is an academically demanding programme, which will teach students an appreciation of classical languages, develop their critical thinking and prepare them for the level of study required at university. It's well regarded by university admissions teams, so it's definitely worth doing if you're hoping to go to uni.

Is the IB course hard?

While the IB Diploma is academically demanding, it's not necessarily much harder than GCSEs. The programme seeks to foster curiosity, intelligent thinking and confidence in students. IB students usually do well in general academically, as they develop their ability to discuss and think critically about ideas with their classmates. This stands them in good stead when completing their A Levels, Pre-U qualification or undergraduate degree.

Learn with an International Baccalaureate Latin tutor

The International Baccalaureate in Latin gives students a grounding in the study of ancient languages and an understanding of the building blocks of modern languages.

Students who study IB Latin can expect to develop skills of critical thought, memory and close analysis. The study of the language as well as Latin literature gives students an opportunity to appreciate the beauty and power of these languages and the cultures that produced them.

Our tutors have extensive knowledge of the IB syllabus and years of experience teaching classical languages. Boost your Latin knowledge and book in a Trial Call or First Lesson today!
