I am very passionate about languages and cultures. I am fluent in both Mandarin and English and have been teaching Mandarin for the last 10 years. My other big passions are travelling and learning all sorts of things new. I am looking forward to sharing my love of the Chinese language with you. I cover all four elements of language teaching syllabus, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. I have tutored students for the past 10 years, ranging from complete beginners, to GCSE students, A level students, HSK students and business professionals. I am very keen to help students discover their own ways of learning and develop their own techniques. I believe in consistency when it comes to learning a language. A little bit everyday is proven effective in the long term for language learning.

I graduated with first class honours on BA (Mathematics) degree at University of Cambridge. After graduating, I spent almost two years working as an Analyst at a consulting firm, where most of my work revolved around coding in C#. However, as my true passion lies in Mathematics, I left my job to look for something education related. I am currently working in two tutorial centers, Conbridge and Helios Education, located in Shen Zhen and Hong Kong respectively. I mainly offer tutoring services to high school students looking to apply to G5 universities in the UK. After more than a year of tutoring, I noticed three things that are crucial to being a teacher. Firstly, I change up the materials and speed of teaching based on the students’ ability. A teacher’s job is not just to go through the syllabus with students, but also to set the right pace of teaching in order to get the points across effectively. Secondly, I put a huge emphasis on the flow and clarity when explaining concepts. There are topics that seem like common sense to some, but are not as straight forward for others. It is therefore important to communicate ideas in a clear and concise way that suits everyone. Finally, I constantly check with my students that they understand what has been taught. I do this by giving out exercises regularly, as well as making the classes more interactive. I enjoy playing board games, which I think is useful in developing teenagers’ logical thinking through having fun. I also enjoy developing games in Unity in my free time. Combined with my previous work experience as a C# Analyst, I would be able to introduce my students to the world of computer science, which is becoming an increasingly important area in modern society.

Subjects Mathematics: Primary, 11+, 13+, GCSE and IGCSE Mandarin Chinese: Beginner, Primary, HSK, GCSE, IGCSE, A Level, IB, Cambridge Pre-U and Undergraduate Level Biography As a qualified teacher in maths, I reflect on my practice daily and seek to improve pupils’ confidence and results. Prior to graduating from the University of Cambridge, I completed my A-level studies with the highest achievable grades in maths, Mandarin Chinese, politics and history. For the last ten years, I have worked in education and subsequently gained a deep insight into the techniques for effective learning and teaching. In terms of maths tutoring, I am experienced in helping pupils reduce their anxiety towards the subject by addressing the barriers to grasping mathematical concepts. I prepare my pupils to achieve both procedural fluency and sound conceptual understanding with the objective of improving their exam results. I make use of a Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract approach (CPA) which emphasises the exploration of the concrete and pictorial stages in greater depth before moving on to abstract concept and mathematical procedures. Virtual and physical manipulatives are used to support this process. It is also key to mode visual approaches such as bar modelling. Instructions are broken down into manageable chunks to help with sequencing steps in longer mathematical processes. I also use consistent mathematical vocabulary so as to reduce confusion. Maths words mat with explanations is used in class to encourage pupils to analyse questions independently. As for Mandarin tutoring, I help pupils gain an understanding of the language by studying the original pictorial representations of characters and the structure of pinyin. I find it important to give pupils a sense of achievement early on by using a variety of strategies to boost their confidence, which is key to language learning. Lesson materials and format are also tailored to align with their special interests to make lessons enjoyable and fun. Another key aspect of my lessons is to help pupils transform their short-term performance into long-term learning by using a multitude of revision techniques to improve knowledge retention. For those who are preparing for public exams, for example GCSE or A Level, in addition to subject knowledge, the focus will be on exam techniques and revision skills to make sure students are familiar with the exam syllabus and requirements. Testimonials “Can’t praise Amanda enough. Not only is she a genius teacher but she has a wonderful and generous personality. The way she approaches teaching is thoughtful and inventive - for instance she made C become the teacher in order to ensure that she really understood the maths topic they were covering. With J, she has woven Mandarin into everyday activities and chat - from naming the food at lunch to today going to Chinatown so J can order a meal!! The children are learning loads and - crucially - loving every minute of their time with Amanda. Funny, patient and with a dazzling intelligence - she’s 100% wonderful!” - Parent of C & J (Year 7 Mandarin & Year 5 Maths) "Thank you so much for your help! I've got an A* in my GCSE speaking and writing assessment. Thank you!" – Oliver (GCSE Mandarin)

Hi, thank you for landing on my profile. I am a native Italian and Chinese tutor, and I have been teaching Italian and Chinese (as well as English, French and Spanish) for many years, both in person and online. I am passionate about empowering my students and designing classes that allow them to learn quickly whilst having fun. With the right method, anyone can learn a language, and I am here to help you find out what works best for you. Of course, if you have a textbook or a specific curriculum, we can follow that. I personally love learning languages because they open so many doors and help people connect in real life. I am teaching myself German, Russian, Catalan and next year I will start Japanese. I currently live between London, Barcelona and Milan, so online classes are easier to arrange. About me, I spent 25 years between Europe and China and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Sustainable Tourism, working with the government. I also work as a tour director organising and leading tours across Europe (and other parts of the world) for schools and private groups. I am a qualified yoga/qi gong/ meditation teacher, and some of my hobbies are scuba diving, tango, cooking and playing music (mostly violin and piano).

I recently graduated from UCL psychology with first class honours! I have gained a lot of experience running psychology experiments and writing up lab reports. I have a strong interest in marketing so I did my dissertation on memory and brand awareness. I previously studied at a British international school in China. I got all As for my IGCSE and 40 points for International Baccalaureate. I mainly tutored students in writing university entry personal statements as I am proficient in this crafting process. I obtained an interview at Cambridge, I got accepted to UCL, Bath, Durham and KCL. I understand the pressure and struggle that many students go through when reflecting upon and framing their strengths to complement their high academic achievements. I hope to help guide students to present the best versions of themselves to get that university interview or offer! I hope to teach those who are still in IB or GCSE the critical analysis and writing skills required at university level. I am very flexible with my teaching as I acknowledge that every student has different agendas and goals. Therefore, I like to tailor my lessons to their needs. I also feel that setting a structure and timeline at the beginning will really help students stay on track and achieve their goal without having to rush their work. In my spare time I am a very outgoing person who loves to network and meet new people. I also like to stay active so I have been practicing Muay Thai for more than a year now. I really recommend practicing martial arts as it teaches you discipline and mental clarity that is benefitting in all aspects of life.

My name is Carmen and I am a Chinese native born in London. Growing up, I've always been fond of learning new languages. I enjoyed the challenges that had to be overcome and the results at the end are so satisfying. Knowing more than one language is so useful and important in life. Not only will it benefit our futures career-wise, it also enables us to interact and communicate with other people of different cultures, and this, is an enriching experience. My mother-tongue is Cantonese, so I am fluent in it. Having grown up in the UK I am also fluent in English. For almost 10 years now, I've been pursuing Mandarin and I can say I can now communicate effectively with Mandarin-speaking people. Over the years, I have experimented with different techniques and tactics in learning a new language, and to learn effectively, we must use the correct ways of learning. And I've also had some very good language teachers in the past, and they have definitely contributed to improving my language skills and confidence. I've had tutoring experience before, and I know everyone is different. Some people need more time than others, some learn best visually, and etc. I always take my time to understand my students first, to work out the pace I should be teaching at. I am patient, and I can understand the difficulties of learning. I aim to boost confidence and give plenty of practice. Furthermore, last year I had a fantastic opportunity to teach underprivileged students aged 11-15 at a summer school in Hong Kong. I taught a course on debating and how to build up a good session, the spirit of the summer school was to establish and maintain an English-only environment for students to immerse themselves in the English language and provide the chance to practise confidently. It was a great success and a truly enriching experience working with these children and I definitely learned a lot about teaching a whole class.
