At present in my early 50s. I began teaching, in a London tutorial college, straight after coming down from Oxford. A few years after that, I interrupted my teaching career to return to university to pursue doctoral research, but I continued to see a small number of private students throughout my time as a post-graduate student. Accordingly, I have somewhere in the region of thirty years’ experience of helping students to realise their potential and, quite often, to exceed their expectations of themselves. My original specialisms were English Language and Literature, and these remain subjects I enjoy teaching immensely, but I have equal experience by now in History of Art, Philosophy, Film Studies, and Religious Studies, each of which I have taught to A level students and undergraduates. I also specialise in Pre-U English. The following is a quotation from the reference supplied by the school from which I resigned last year, after twenty years as Head of English and de facto Head of Humanities, in order to focus on private tuition: ‘Bill’s main virtues as a teacher […] are his infectious enthusiasm for his subjects, his immense knowledge and erudition, his intimate familiarity with past papers and assessment criteria, his commitment to his pupils, his willingness to make supererogatory efforts on their behalf, his provision of extensive and meticulous course notes, and his generosity with his time.’

I am a highly experienced tutor of A level (and GCSE) Physics, Chemistry and Maths with an additional specialism in GASMAT, where I have many successful students. I provide support for students preparing for their entrance exams, and for their GCSE and A level exams. I also assist students with their UCAS applications and university interviews. I have a lot of recent experience of teaching GAMSAT students, a specialism of mine. Recently I won a prize as the best new tutor at a tutorial agency, and last academic year my six A level Physics students achieved A*, A*, A*, A*, A* and A respectively. I am a top-rated GAMSAT tutor. My aim is to help my students to reach their full academic potential and get the grades they deserve. I believe in making sure that the underlying fundamental concepts are fully understood as this provides a solid foundation. There is nothing more rewarding than a student saying, "oh yes, now I get it". My tutoring style is to seek to identify the key areas where support is required and then patiently and sympathetically to help and encourage my tutees to master these areas. I have a post-graduate teaching degree and have taught in a number of Schools, Colleges and Universities. I tutor individuals and also groups in schools, sixth form Colleges and Russell group universities. I was a lecturer at Imperial College for 26 years where I was an admissions tutor, senior tutor and postgraduate tutor and became deputy director of the Graduate school. I won the Rectors award for excellence in teaching at Imperial College twice. I have recent experience of tutoring and one to one teaching and also of tutoring in four central London schools, namely the City and Islington college, the Harris academy St Johns Wood, St Saviours and St Olave' school and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson school, Islington. In my spare time I like to swim, exercise in the gym and kayak. I also love to travel and have lived and worked in Singapore, Sydney, Dallas and on a short placement in the Punjab. I support QPR more in hope than in expectation!

My name is Samuel and I graduated from Cambridge University in 2007 with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering. In addition to this, I hold a Professional Tutoring Certificate (Distinction awarded) and I am a fully qualified teacher too. I have a passion for teaching/tutoring Mathematics and Sciences (mostly Physics, Chemistry and Biology) to GCSE and A-level students. I have mentored and tutored students from an assorted array of backgrounds since 2002, helping some to get to Oxbridge and Ivy League universities and helping them with interview preparations when requested. My teaching journey started in 2002 when I took a year out working as an assistant/support teacher actively involved in mentoring, lesson planning and marking. I take pride in having been commended for my teaching style where I always ensure to explain everything in the simplest of manners and take an approach that most suits the student to bring out their best effort. After graduating from Cambridge, I went on to seek professional employment as a graduate engineer but never left my passion for teaching. I therefore volunteered as a STEM ambassador where I shared my passion for Science and Mathematics to students from various backgrounds. I continue to take utmost joy and pleasure in tutoring and helping students attain their full potential; and in this regard, I can assure any prospective students that they’ll be getting the most out of their time and money whilst paving way for a bright future.

I am a 26-year-old Oxford graduate (first-class honours) and fully-qualified English teacher with over five years teaching and tutoring experience. In terms of my own qualifications, I have 11 GCSEs (9 A* / 2 A grades), 5 A-Levels (5 A* grades), a Bachelor Degree (1st Class) and a Master's Degree (Distinction). I also have three years` experience teaching English Literature and English Language at Hurstpierpoint College, an outstanding, mixed-sex independent school in Sussex. Here, I taught students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13. My classes at GCSE and A-Level consistently attained excellent results and I am familiar with a variety of exam-boards, including Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and AQA. I have a strong understanding of exam specifications, mark-schemes and course structures, and I have extensive experience teaching and marking English coursework. As Head of Year 9 English at Hurstpierpoint, I have valuable experience designing department-wide learning resources which effectively promote good pupil progress. When I moved to London to complete an MA at King`s College London (graduating in 2019 with Distinction), I worked with the tutoring agency London Scholars, providing 1-1 English tutoring to over 15 students across London. In this time, I worked with pupils in Year 1 through to Year 13. As well as assisting with GCSE and A-Level exams, I worked closely with Year 12/13 students to support them in their university applications, running mock interviews, supervising EPQs and scrutinising personal statements. I also worked with students to develop their Verbal Reasoning and English skills in preparation for 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance examinations. I received positive feedback from all my clients who have found me to be a professional, friendly and knowledgeable tutor, equipped with effective learning resources. Last year I took a maternity cover post as an English Teacher at St George`s international school, Montreux, Switzerland. During this time I had sole responsibility for Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 English classes. This experience greatly developed my knowledge of international exam boards and also allowed me to work closely with EAL (English as an Additional Language) students. SOME FEEDBACK ON TUTORING SESSIONS: "Marcus was a superb tutor. This is my child`s assessment: "His understanding of the exam boards and the ways examiners mark essays has really helped me to adapt my style of writing and I feel a lot more confident in my written responses. He is always eager to improve my understanding of texts and has helped me become more critical of my own ideas surrounding them. Not only is he a brilliant academically focused teacher, he is an immensely approachable and likeable person" - Peter "Very good tutor for English, highly recommended!" - Radhika "Marcus is very professional in his approach. So far my daughter has had about 3-4 sessions with Marcus and we have already seen a big improvement in her writing skills. He is patient and engaging and always arrives with a prepared lesson plan. We hope to continue with Marcus this fall." - Milena "Marcus is very professional, organised and very hardworking and he has the ability to engage my son, exceptionally well throughout the lesson. I have nothing but the highest praises for Marcus’ teaching approach and effectiveness. He is also a very exceptional English Tutor. He is very knowledgable on the material that my son is studying and has gone through it, thoroughly with him so far. My son is very lucky to have Marcus as a tutor, as he’s brilliant all round and I am extremely grateful." - Dionne "Marcus tutored our daughter through her English GCSE exams in 2019. Alice wanted help with English Language, particularly creative writing. Marcus`s work with Alice helped her structure her writing and prepare her not only for her creative writing exam but also with an approach to her writing and written questions across different subjects. She gained confidence as well as knowledge from her tutorials. Marcus is easy going, engaging and fitted straight in with a busy household. During Alices recent exams Marcus took the time to check up on Alice and offer encouragement. I`m happy to highly recommend Marcus." - Alex "Marcus has been an excellent tutor for my son who is taking his GCSEs shortly. He is extremely well prepared and organised, with presentations for each session. He gives me immediate feedback and a summary of what has been covered and what needs to be done. A*!" - Max TUTORING APPROACH: In terms of my tutoring approach, I pride myself on providing a tailored service which responds to the particular strengths and needs of the student. Through questioning, constant feedback on work and adaptive planning, I hope to develop a system of teaching and learning with the student which will best ensure their continued progress. I generally build my tutoring sessions around practice papers, example answers and mark-schemes, breaking down the tasks so the student can work on the elements they find most difficult. English is a subject which requires a whole host of skills - timing, planning, structuring, careful reading, comprehension, accurate SPAG (spelling, punctuation, grammar), creativity, analysis, proof-reading - and my lessons encourage students to identify their areas for improvement and to implement practical strategies for overcoming areas of weakness. Above all, I consider myself a warm and enthusiastic teacher. It is my belief that students learn best when they are engaged yet relaxed, when they feel motivated to ask questions and reflect positively on their work. With academic pressures as intense ever, it is my intention to provide sessions which make the student feel in control of their work. Should you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I am a masters student at Trinity College, Oxford University. Having achieved 11 A* and an A at GCSE and 3A* and 2A's at A-level, and a first in my degree, I know how stressful exam's can be and how to ensure academic success at the highest level. Through my experience of exams and degrees, I have learnt the core skills examiners are looking for, as well as how to explain complex ideas and maximise learning for my students benefit. I have been tutoring using online platforms for over 2 years, I have found it very rewarding to watch my students learn and grow intellectually as well as seeing the great improvements in their exam results. I have tutored in a variety of subjects, mainly working in the humanities from 11+ through to A-level. I have also tutored extensively in university and Oxbridge applications as well as common entrance. In total I have tutored around 50 students, I have always been able to build a good working relationship with my students, which is so crucial to a motivated and enjoyable learning experience. I have been excellently reviewed both for the drastically improved exam results of my students, as well as the improvements in their intellectual confidence and skills. My teaching style focuses on identifying and adapting to each students academic needs (including SEN). With limited time to learn syllabuses and prepare for exams, it is critical that I first work out the gaps in a students knowledge and what areas of their exam technique need strengthening. To do this I often ask my students to go through the curriculum and rate their confidence as well as reviewing recent work. Once this has been done, I devise a programme of learning to target the areas that need the most improvement, consulting with students and parents as to where they feel they need the most help. Each lesson is meticulously planned and often includes the student building up a very useful set of revision notes that I have prepared and they have taken in lessons. I view the setting and marking of work outside of school as critical to the value of additional tutoring. I will set students a piece of work and give them very detailed feedback, line by line in a written document and in person. I will also encourage a student to work through problems and present arguments from their work in a lesson since this helps build the core intellectual skills all exams are testing. I also like to plan and prepare essays or exam questions with my students since this ingrains the ability to think through exam questions in a structured and time efficient way. In essay based subjects, I will teach students the perfect way to write persuasive and clear essays, adapting the structure to each exam board. When I am teaching content to students I always prepare notes or a presentation to use as a stimulus, and focus on constantly engaging the student in a conversation about the material and to test their understanding.Through this teaching style I hope to equip my students with a broad range of intellectual skills, as well as the knowledge, technique and revision skills to maximise their exam achievement. I constantly invest in the latest textbooks for OCR, AQA and Edexcel Economics, Philosophy/RS and Politics. Staying up-to date with the latest syllabuses and question styles of the various boards is so important for a tutor as it takes the pressure off students of not knowing what to expect. I also read examiner reports for each years exams, as well as consulting model answers. These are very useful resources for tutors as they offer insight into what markers are looking for, allowing me to tailor my advice, year on year, for every exam. I have all of my notes from my own A-levels and GCSE's which I constantly update and refine for my students. I prepare diligently for each lesson to ensure I offer a complete knowledge of every aspect of the syllabus. I am extremely passionate about learning and view it as highly important that each students reaches their full academic and intellectual potential, I hope to offer a highly rewarding and engaging learning experience that leaves students satisfied that they have done all the preparation needed for their goals and aims.

Over my A-levels and gap year I worked face-to-face with many GCSE maths students (and a few younger) and lots of beginner, up to grade 5, piano students. I aim to be as enthusiastic and relatable as possible, as these subjects are the things I enjoy most and would love to see young people enjoy them as well, not just attempt to stay afloat. My absolute favorite parts of my subjects are algebra, which understandably is a struggling point for many young people, and in regards to music, that of musical theory and history, which I do try to incorporate a little of in my instrumental lessons as well. I also aim to help students with learning disabilities to overcome challenges as a result, and also to help them understand and incorporate the benefits of their neurodiversity. I myself have dyslexia, and am currently studying aspects of how dyslexics learn and memorize music. I have taught several students with dyslexia (and other learning disabilities), and hope to share strategies for coping with it, but also how it can actually help students in other aspects of education and life. My teaching style Maths - Firstly, every student is different, so in the first session I ask what the student struggles with the most, what they enjoy and how they prefer to learn (visually, practically, through theory or an example first etc). If they’re not too sure, I work through a range of questions with them, from a broad range of topics to establish their strengths, weaknesses and how they engage with problems. In subsequent lessons I prepare a topic to cover (or part of one), working through the theory by building up from important basics up to more complex questions and problem solving, working through questions together and then by themselves. I always ask at the beginning of sessions, however, if there is anything they struggled with during the week, at school or in homework, and cover that first if possible. If it is a bigger issue, meaning the basics of the topic are not yet understood, I plan a full lesson for a subsequent session. I have worked with many maths students, particularly at KS3 and GCSE level, and found this layout to be very successful (for both results and confidence in mathematical problem solving) and also encourages openness between myself and the student in terms of asking questions, discussing topics they find complex, and speaking up when they don’t understand something. In my experience, many students struggle with the principles of algebra and fractions, which have been rushed through when they were younger but form the basis of a lot of higher level maths. Once these topics are covered thoroughly, many students, I have found, are able to comprehend the rest of the course with considerably more ease. It was not too long ago that I sat these examinations myself, so I’m very familiar with what the exams include and how they expect the questions to be answered - of course every school and exam board is slightly different so I keep up to date with changes in exam board specifications. For younger students I ask to see if there is a year curriculum that has been handed out to the students, which there usually is, and if not we work through all the standard topics which are pretty much universal. Music - All lessons are different depending on the standard of the student and how they respond to different teaching methods. For beginners, I incorporate learning music notation as well as some learning by ear. As they grow with confidence with the notes and basic sight-reading and aural skills, I split the lessons into a fun warm up, where we might play through a short piece or they show me something they’ve enjoyed practicing that week, then some technical skills, such as scales, arpeggios, breath control etc, then work on pieces they’re learning, then finally a play through to finish and recap what we’ve learned that session. This lesson layout I generally keep with for more advanced students as well, although this depends on what they are working toward, be it exams, a recital, solo or group performance etc. I do not necessarily expect all my students to take ABRSM or other music exams if they do not want to, as it is not always helpful to the students in terms of what they want to be learning, and is in no way necessary. Often students want to do them, and I will have a conversation with parents and the student to establish what is best for them. I more encourage performances and finding what they love. The exams can be useful for UCAS and general experience, so I do not discourage taking them and am very familiar with the layout, having taken many and accompanied a few myself. I have taught from beginners, both children and adults, through to more advanced students performing regularly and guided them through exams, performance techniques, and some people starting to explore composition for their instrument. Some of the biggest difficulties that arise are students not being able to read music, which is imperative for exams and playing in (particularly classical and jazz) ensembles, so experience has taught me to really cover some theoretical and technical aspects every lesson, as well as the practical side. Most importantly I want to ensure my students engage with their studies in a positive way, and develop their own interests within the subject.

I am a Cambridge graduate, with vast experience as both a classroom teacher and private tutor. After my graduation in 2012, I worked as a Teacher of Classics at a private school in Glasgow. During this time, uptake for my subjects increased dramatically, and pupils consistently gained top grades under my supervision, including a full class of A grades in Latin during my final year in this role. I was also involved with university applications, with a focus on Oxbridge. This included helping to structure and proofread personal statements, assisting with college choices and giving mock interviews in a variety of subjects. In 2015, I took up a position as a traveling homeschool tutor, working with two teenage bilingual brothers. I was their tutor for English, Latin, Classical Civilisation and History, as well as SAT Reading and Writing. This experience of tutoring while travelling the world required a high level of organisation and motivation to keep my students on track despite the distractions of continuous travel. The boys' level of English improved hugely during my three years with them, and culminated in the eldest student being accepted to his U.S. university of choice. I have been tutoring online for six years, and, as an experienced online tutor, I have developed methods specific to online teaching which ensure that my students remain engaged and motivated. I utilise screen-sharing and Powerpoint while working online with my students, to keep lessons lively and enjoyable. As a highly organised and efficient professional, students always get the most out of their lessons, and I have a consistent track record of improving grades across a range of subjects and levels. I engage quickly with students of all ages and provide a fun learning environment where students feel able to make the mistakes which will enable them to grow as learners. I enjoy getting to know my students well, so that I can find out what their learning styles are, and how best to support them on their learning journey. As an intelligent quick thinker, I am easily adaptable to a range of subjects and situations, with a proven track record of getting the best out of my students and meeting high client expectations.

English, Creative Writing, Reasoning, Philosophy School/Uni Admissions I am a full-time private tutor with 9 years’ experience in teaching English to all school levels from 7 plus to 16 plus (examination and interview preparation for the top schools in the London area - e.g. City, Tiffin, Latymer, Merchant Taylors’), GCSE and A-Level (AQA, WJEC Eduqas, Edexcel, Cambridge, etc.), as well as preparing students for English language tests, including IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge English Qualifications. Additionally, I tutor philosophy to A-Level and undergraduate students and assist undergraduate literature students with literary theory, academic writing, and research. My priority is to make my lessons both fun and informative as it may be quite challenging to make progress without pleasure in learning. The lessons take place in a happy atmosphere where students feel the comfort to communicate and express their opinions. Furthermore, I encourage students to explore ideas and understand concepts by probing student thinking rather than rote learning or bland lecturing. I allow students to elaborate on topics while I fill in the gaps where necessary by picking up on their ideas and introducing new perspectives. The lessons intertwine and enhance critical thinking and writing skills predominantly which are crucial to achieving success whether tuition is in preparation for secondary school pre-tests or undergraduate level assignments. Under recent circumstances, I have been mostly tutoring online and have been using a variety of online platforms to deliver effective virtual lessons. I now have sufficient experience with all the standard video applications, such as Bramble, Skype, Vedamo, Zoom, etc. I tutor every day of the week and all times of the day. I would be happy to adapt my schedule to meet your availability. ***************************************************************************** My background: I hold a BA in English Language and Literature from Near East University and studied for MA Comparative Literature at King’s College London. In the last two years of my bachelor’s degree, I focused on aestheticism and forms of imprisonment in Oscar Wilde, stream of consciousness narratives in modern literature (e.g. Virginia Woolf and Oguz Atay), and neo-noir and black comedy crime cinema from the mid-1950s to the late 1990s, whereas during the MA course, my research revolved around the intersection of myth and orality in African and Caribbean literatures, Adorno’s aesthetic theory and the promise of happiness in the post-WWII art, and melancholia and ethics in the 18th-century European literature. I began tutoring in 2011, during my third year at university, due to the encouragement and requests I received from relatives and family friends. In 2012, shortly after graduating, I accepted an offer to teach English Literature and World History as a secondary school teacher. Since then, I taught in various settings and have engaged with students from different cultural backgrounds and of different learning abilities. As a result of providing tailored academic support for each client and making myself fully available for their needs, I now secure long-established ties and receive positive feedback from students and families. Throughout my academic experience, I have been extremely fortunate to meet educators who cared for my learning as much my parents did. Their guidance and pastoral support have had significant effects on my motivation while growing up and even after I took tutoring as a professional career. Owing to their contribution, I value the importance of quality education and the impact it makes at any level. Therefore, I endeavour to mirror their inspiration while working with my students.
