Teaching Experience Maxim has tutored since graduating from Oxford in 2019. He has delivered over 1000 hours of tutoring, a testament to his commitment and dedication. In 2022, one of Maxim's students scored an A* in A-Level Politics, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. His students regularly gain top grades in A-levels and coursework. In 2021, both long-term Politics students got their desired grades and went to their dream universities. Maxim has experience across the Humanities, including various A-Level Politics syllabi and exam boards. The Oxbridge tutorial system (going through essays forensically and discussing them in depth) is central to Maxim's tutoring. These were, in his own words, "the best years of my life, with a learning experience I'm keen to share." Testimonials “The amount of history and your ability to create a timeline in order to help me learn the syllabus, although (it) may seem like common sense, makes the course much easier to understand thanks to you.” Andreas (A-Level Politics student) “Maxim tutored our son regularly throughout his A level Politics course. He was awarded an A* in his exam. Maxim has extensive background knowledge about the subject, exam technique and offers patience and persistence. Our son said he misses the sessions now the exams are over, which is a real endorsement. I would thoroughly recommend Maxim.” Jane (parent of former Politics student) Bio Maxim is a Masters student in London, studying Broadcast Journalism. Before that, he spent two years working exclusively as a freelance History and Politics tutor. He spent three years at Trinity College, Oxford reading History and Politics. At Oxford, Maxim focused on British and international politics, achieving high marks in International Relations and US Politics. While a student, Maxim also appeared on University Challenge and was twice an elected member of the Oxford Union's governing body. Maxim got three A grades at A-Level, notching up 100% in UK Politics with additional success in US Politics. Maxim received offers from LSE and Warwick along with Oxford.

I am a fourth-year PhD student in the English and Comparative Literature department at King’s College London. I have been a teacher in this department for the past couple of years, giving me extensive experience lecturing and delivering seminar-style teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have been marking essays and examinations, offering students advice on improving the strength of their argument, critical reading and analysis, and structural features. I have taught English as a foreign language to non-native speakers abroad in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. This has given me valuable skills to increase conversational skills, vocabulary range, and correct grammar, diction, and sentence construction in students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. I have volunteered in primary and secondary schools as a tutor, helping students with special needs and learning difficulties struggling with English. I specialise in improving the written communication and critical thinking skills of GCSE and A-Level students in various arts and humanities subjects: philosophy, history, ancient history, politics, and, particularly, English Language and Literature. I am well versed in the set texts, syllabuses, and assessed content of several examination boards: Edexcel, AQA, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge IGCSE, WJEC, and Scottish Highers. I have also helped students prepare for Oxford interviews and admissions tests, sit the GAMSAT and BMAT medical entrance exams, and pass the IELTS English proficiency exams. I am a naturally patient and open-minded teacher who ensures each lesson is tailor-made to suit each student’s personal needs and learning motivations. I have high standards in the hard work and respect I expect from my students. I am motivated by my students' progress and am willing to adapt and improve my teaching strategies to help students achieve the academic success they deserve.

I very much enjoy helping students with their university applications, essays, research proposals, dissertations, and doctoral theses. I teach students at all levels – from undergraduate to postgraduate. I have 5 years of successful university experience in teaching sociology, cultural studies, and criminology to undergraduate students. I hold an ESRC-funded PhD in Sociology, which was awarded with no corrections. Prior to this, I obtained a Masters in Sociology with a distinction and the highest grades overall in my cohort, and I gained a first-class degree in Psychology, along with the award of the British Psychological Society Undergraduate Prize for the highest grade in the year group. I also pride myself in helping students to develop both their writing skills and their critical thinking. Although, I was not always a ‘natural’ writer, writing, as with any other skill, can be learned, as my academic achievements and the excellent results of the students I have taught demonstrate. The same applies to critical thinking, which I consider the ability to de-familiarise the familiar and think about the taken-for-granted features of everyday life as if they were something extraordinary. In my experience, theory and complex conceptual issues can be intimidating and difficult to grasp for the majority of people (they were for me, too!). Yet, I have learned that once theory is explained with the help of simple and concrete examples, it can become much more accessible, and therefore be understood and learned. I am very passionate about the subjects I teach. Studying Sociology, Cultural Studies, or Criminology can allow you to look at the world in a very different way and ultimately change you into a person able to express your potential. After many years of research and teaching, I am still very passionate about the subjects I teach – an enthusiasm I love to convey to students with my approachable and tailored lessons.

I’m an experienced teacher and creative writing tutor with a first class degree in Philosophy and Modern Languages from University College London, including one year of study at Université de Paris-Sorbonne. I have five years of teaching experience with individuals, school groups, arts organisations and community groups. I’ve taught English Literature and creative writing with a wide range of organisations, including The Barbican Centre, The Poetry School and The Midnight Run. My specialities are English Literature, English Language and Philosophy. My students have ranged from 11 to 80 years of age, and I have substantial experience working with students for whom English is not their first language. My lessons use creative, engaging techniques tailored to the needs and goals of each student, to help them unlock their true potential. I combine a passion for the subjects with a rigorous focus on exam strategy and study techniques. My goal is to improve grades, and give students both the tools and the drive for long term success. I’m dedicated to fostering a safe, enjoyable learning environment, where we work to identify areas for improvement and map out strategies to maximise . I believe an approach grounded in kindness, patience, and fun is key to helping students with areas of difficulty, reluctance or stress. Overall, I am focused on helping students believe in their own potential and giving them the support they need to meet it. As a recipient of both an academic scholarship and an arts scholarship to my secondary school, I know how life-changing exam success can be. I’m committed to helping students secure those transformative opportunities. I’m also a prize-winning writer, poet and author, with multiple national awards for creative writing. Those include a London Writers Award 2021, the Poetry London Prize 2020 and the Verve Poetry Festival Prize 2020. I’m represented by Harriet Moore of David Higham Literary Agency. This work has redoubled my passion for teaching literature, and I have honed my skills through my years of freelance teaching. I offer high-quality, individually-tailored creative writing lessons. These can optionally be combined with qualification-focused teaching to engage students with English Literature and English Language, and help give them a practical understanding of the nuts and bolts of writing that they can then apply to their school work.

Teaching Experience & Approach I am a private tutor and educational consultant, delivering approximately 35 hours of in-person and online tuition each week. My in-person lessons mainly take place in West London, e.g., Chelsea, Kensington, Holland Park, Acton, and Ealing, and I often take on siblings at different levels and oversee all academic progress; in tandem with that, I carry out regular online tuition to students across the UK, China, Hong Kong, Russia, and Qatar. With over 10 years’ experience in education, I support students ranging from primary school to university and beyond. I offer expert knowledge covering 7+ to 16+ entrance and scholarship exams and interview prep, and my students have won places at Harrow, Winchester, the City of London, Latymer Upper, Dulwich Prep and Dulwich College, Francis Holland, Merchant Taylors’, Bolton School, and Perse School. I proficiently deliver all core subjects up to Key Stage 2, and while I specialise in English, I also tutor Art History and Philosophy in preparation for GCSE, A-Level and the IB exams. With experience at all academic levels, I maintain strong ties with my clients, seeing many through the entirety of the school system. For over a year, I have been tutoring English and Maths at Key Stages 1 and 2 and A-Level English, Art History, and university admissions whilst working with three children in one family. Moreover, I monitor the children’s academic progress, liaising with schoolteachers and other tutors to ensure they receive the best support in preparation for school and university applications. I enjoy giving a push to my students and firmly believe that every child has the potential to succeed. One of my success stories comes from a primary school student who considered English his archenemy. After a few months of weekly online tutorials during the pandemic, my student published his first compilation of poetry. He expanded the project further by dedicating the proceeds to a charity that aided families affected during the lockdown. During that time, I acted as his editor and prepared him for numerous interviews held by renowned media organisations, including the BBC and ITV, which invited him to their radio programmes. With the continuation of English lessons, my student also won a full scholarship, securing entry into his first choice of school. At all academic levels, I home in on critical thinking and writing skills and encourage students to explore their own narratives. Having first read English and subsequently Comparative Literature, I seamlessly transfer an extensive knowledge of textual information and literary theory over to the secondary school and degree-level tuition. Most of my students notice a huge difference after a session or two in their ability and confidence to discuss topics within the classroom cohort and the way they perceive a piece of text. Due to the nature of my voluntary work and previous teaching roles at schools, I have been through extensive child safety training programmes, and my DBS is updated each year. As an active tutor over the past decade, I have engaged with students diagnosed with autism and dyslexia who required specific teaching methods suitable to their learning. I regularly revise and refine my knowledge on how to assist special needs students and have been able to successfully help previous tutees improve their grades in a short period of time. Throughout my academic experience, I have been extremely fortunate to meet educators who cared for my learning as much as my parents. Their guidance and pastoral support have had significant effects on my motivation while growing up and even after I took tutoring as a professional career. Owing to their contribution, I value the importance of quality education and the impact it makes at any level. Therefore, I endeavour to mirror their inspiration while working with my students. . Background I graduated as the top student of my year studying BA English Language and Literature at Near East University, then matriculated at the prestigious King’s College London to study for MA Comparative Literature. Stream of consciousness narratives, nonlinearity, and oral literature as a form of resistance circulate within my research interests, and I am often drawn to themes of mental imprisonment, identity, and displacement. I enjoy exploring literary pieces enmeshed with philosophy and have always been most interested in the works of Virginia Woolf, Nietzsche, Kafka, Samuel Beckett, and Adorno. Whilst working as a private tutor over the past decade, I held teaching roles and acted as an educational consultant at private schools in Cyprus, covering English Language and Literature and World History at GCSE and A-Level and IELTS and university admissions at Sixth Form. I convened book clubs and drama groups to enrich the extracurricular activities offered to students. In addition, I volunteered with the women’s organisation KAYAD, helping teenagers and adults take their first steps into the English language. Having taken translation studies at the postgraduate level, I participated in government-funded cultural projects as a translator, editor, and community interpreter. I assisted in the running of seminars on domestic violence in collaboration with the former first lady of Northern Cyprus and acclaimed international speakers, mediating cross-lingual communication. Recently, I embarked on a new project of translating the biography and memoirs of the Turkish Cypriot artist Ismet Vehit Guney, who designed the modern Cypriot flag. Since my teenage years, I have enjoyed acrylic painting and art history and took part in art exhibitions. I write poetry, and my work has been published in literary magazines. During holidays, I frequent the hotspots of the Caribbean and Balearics and spend my free time exercising or listening to jazz. . Testimonials “Hazal had an excellent relationship with our daughter since day 1. She has made English enjoyable and interesting for our daughter who has a very short attention span. We are very pleased to be working with her and feel confident that we are well-prepared for the 11+ exams.” ~ Parent of 11 Plus student, London Consortium candidate) “Hazal has worked as a tutor for the family for the last 6 months and we have noticed real progress with both girls since she started. We contacted Hazal to focus on English and 11+ preparation for a 9-year-old girl attending Garden House school in Chelsea. As English is not her first language, she needed lots of support with extending her vocabulary, improving her spelling, comprehension and creative writing. From the first lesson, they had a great bond. Hazal is warm, funny but also firm when she needs to be, this means that Michelle is always keen to go to her lessons and spend time with her. Michelle has made great progress since they started working together at the beginning of the year. Hazal is always encouraging, and her teaching style motivates Michelle to try her best and work hard. They have been working with a variety of materials to help Michelle improve in all aspects of her English and also start working towards her 11+ exams. Hazal always provides a detailed progress report at the end of each month to show which areas they have focused on and what progress has been made Hazal has also started to work with Michelle’s elder sister in preparation for her English Literature A-Level exams. She has helped her a great deal and she is also very happy with her work. She has helped her build her confidence in an area in which she was previously struggling, and they will continue to work together until her final exams.” ~ Parent of two girls, 11 Plus and A-Level “We contacted Hazal in preparation for 11+ English, Reasoning, and interview prep. Hazal did a great job in preparing our daughter for the exam. She was friendly, professional and exposed Alicia to a variety of exam-style questions in preparation for the exam. Furthermore, our daughter has become more confident whilst working with Hazal and secured offers from Godolphin, North London Collegiate, Putney High, City of London, and Francis Holland. We are very pleased!” ~ Parent of 11 Plus student, secured offers from Godolphin, North London Collegiate, Putney High, City of London, and Francis Holland) “Hazal taught my son English and Verbal Reasoning. She is a committed tutor who taught enthusiastically and in a manner that maintained my son’s interest. She was always so generous with her time and built a lovely relationship with my son, which ensured he really enjoyed the lessons. My son has secured places at Merchant Taylors’ and Mill Hill.” ~ Parent of 11 Plus student, secured offers from Merchant Taylor’s and Mill Hill “Hazal is a great tutor! She is knowledgeable and well prepared; I highly recommend her. Only after 3 lessons my sons test results improved at school, and she is helping with the ISEB 11 + preparation and Latymer School Admissions” ~ Parent of 11 Plus student “I have reached out to Hazal to get help prior to my son’s 11+ exams. Our first choice is Westminster, and we were looking for someone to help our son improve his inference and descriptive writing skills. Hazal has been able to offer a wealth of resources – despite the fact that we have exhausted anything that was available online and in print. Hazal has been incredible at teaching inference and writing skills to our son and we have been very happy with his progress. We highly recommend her as an 11+ tutor.” ~ Parent of 11 Plus student, secured place at Westminster School “Hazal has been a phenomenal teacher and offered me incredible support throughout my English Literature AS course. Not only has her sophisticated arguments and critical perspectives helped me better understand and evaluate the texts we were studying but at the same time, the eloquence of her speech and concision of her ideas has helped elevate my writing as a whole. What Hazal has taught me goes beyond understanding and analysing the set texts, she has provided me with the skills to formulate my own arguments and to scrutinise the meaning behind different literary pieces. It is truly a pleasure to attend her lessons in which we engage in thoughtful discussions over the text and practice writing techniques.” ~ English Literature A-Level Student “I have been working with Hazal for just over 2 months and I’ve already noticed a huge difference in my writing and ability to discuss literature; she is very patient and encourages me to share all of my ideas. We go over the material that will help me in exams, but she also gives tips that improve my performance in class. In that sense, I find our lessons incredibly helpful to build confidence. Hazal is very passionate about literature and committed to delivering quality education. She is well-informed about the syllabus, and I always look forward to our lessons! Overall, Hazal is truly such a good teacher and a very kind person, which is more than I could have hoped for.” ~ English Language and Literature International Baccalaureate Student “Hazal has been an incredible help over the past two years! I first consulted her to seek help with a philosophy paper I was to write on the theory of the sublime. Having attained the highest mark in our cohort after having a couple of sessions with Hazal, I decided to work with her during my third year. She has been a great help while I was writing my dissertation – not only in terms of teaching English and guiding my writing but also by providing a wealth of knowledge in postcolonial theory and phenomenology, which has enriched my third-year papers. I cannot recommend her highly enough!” ~ Architecture BA Student

I am a highly experienced tutor with over 7 years experience teaching and tutoring in private and public schools, as well as privately and online, in the UK, France and Spain. I am familiar with all major exam boards, and have been frequently noted for the passion and rigor with which I introduce and teach my subjects. I am a firm believer in the idea that education should be available to all, and that there is is student without potential. I thus make a point to help the student see the attraction of the subject. My methodology is focused on ensuring immersion in both the more theoretical and abstract principles of the subect and their application through practice and concrete examples. I aim to get the student applying themselves consistently as soon as possible, keeping a constant eye out for areas for improvement. I studied at the University of Warwick, Sciences Po, and the Sorbonne. I have worked as a teacher, tutor, translator, researcher, as well as business research and charity. I am fluent in 6 languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German. I am also a teacher of Latin and Greek.

I offer tuition in Sociology, Politics, Government, History, English Language, English Literature, Philosophy, Religious Studies, public speaking, essay technique and interview technique. However, I also offer bespoke Oxbridge interview tuition for those wishing to read a Humanities subject. Having been through the process twice and seen it from both sides, I am uniquely placed to guide and assist potential Oxbridge pupils. I also support students in 11+ and 13+ exam entry, with specific focus for bursary or scholarship applications. I've been tutoring for 5 years, and taught many students whilst I was at Cambridge. Before joining Tutor House, I engaged in freelance work, tutoring for friends of the family and members of my social circle. Having graduated, it is my goal to take these skills, and my passion for education, to a wider base of clients. I currently work with a number of students through Tutor House, mainly at 13+ and GCSE level, covering a variety of subjects. I believe that tutoring provides a crucial niche not often covered by mainstream education. Tutoring provides a unique opportunity to build on a pupil's strengths whilst building confidence and helping them overcome their weaknesses. Every pupil has a unique way of learning, and, as such, deserves a completely unique teaching approach, specially tailored to them. It would be my pleasure to apply the knowledge I have gained over my academic career to help new clients excel.

I have been tutoring KS3, GCSE, A-Level and undergraduate students for over 7 years, and I have 7 years of experience working with A-Level and GCSE students in some educational capacity. I have also seen several students through the Oxrbidge admissions process. I recently home-schooled a student who completed an A-Level in History in one year. She attained an A, and went on to study History at Oxford, having not studied History since year 9. A number of my students have attained A’s or A*s at A-Level and GCSE, and others exceeded their predictions by up to three grades. My tutoring is geared around a recognition that ability, circumstances and character differ from student to student. My tutoring aims to instil confidence, both in the subject I am working on with a student, but also in their general educational and personal development. I also believe that posing deep questions about the foundations of a discipline or topic is essential to instil enthusiasm. I set clear objectives at the beginning of each session. Although there will be prepared and resources for each lesson, where a potential learning opportunity arises I am happy to explore this avenue as long as it achieves the lesson goal. I am particularly keen on making my tutorials as practical as possible. My students are invited to hone their skills in writing, critical reading, research, note-taking, and articulation from the get-go. I aim for students to develop greater confidence in themselves and gain a sense of responsibility and initiative towards their schoolwork. I enjoy the freedom one-to-one tuition gives me to adapt my lessons to the pace, needs and interests of the individual student, and I always take time in a first lesson to talk to a new student about their goals and perceived difficulties with the subject. In my experience, this is time well spent, as understanding a student’s motivation and learning style is key to success. I take great pleasure in watching my students grow in confidence, as well as reach (and often exceed) their academic goals.

I am a Philosophy and Religious Studies graduate who studied at the University of Kent, achieving a 2:1. During my secondary school years, I achieved 9 A*- C grades, including an A* in English Literature and Religious Studies. For the past two years, I have tutored English from KS3 to KS4, teaching over a 1100 lessons to secondary school students. During my degree, I found that the skills I learnt in my English lessons were integral to the completion of degree, due to the fact that it was a largely writing based subject, meaning I was practising these skills daily during my time at university. My lessons always start of with an introduction lesson in order to create a comfortable environment for the pupil, and it allows me to asses the pupils needs. Each lesson will be tailored for the individual pupil, offering a range of different activities to suit their learning. My love for reading and writing have helped immensely whilst tutoring, as I often use different literature types to interest the pupils, specifically chosen to align with their interests.

Hi there, My name is Christian. I’ve recently finished my MA in Comparative Literary Studies, specialising in American literature, Theory and Culture at Goldsmiths University, and am looking to pursue a career in education. I’m passionate about making the humanities engaging and enjoyable, which I feel is something easily achievable through patience, creativity and strong relationships between a student and teacher. Where I thrive is when i'm helping to make literature, philosophy, critical theory, as well as the many tenants of writing effective essays understandable and accessible to a range of students from varying backgrounds and educational requirements. Before my MA program, I completed my BA in English and American Literature at Goldsmiths University London in 2018. While my studies have mainly centred on American literature so far, the flexible nature of my program has enabled me to study a wide breadth of literature as well texts of a different medium from a multitude of cultures and periods. While providing me with a firm grasp of the major cultural, artistic and literary movements, my studies have greatly developed my analytic abilities across a range of different systems of thought. Teaching me to effectively; distil complex information into an accessible format, develop lines of critical reasoning, and construct compelling arguments from independent research. These abilities, when paired with open and clear channels of communication, prove invaluable as a teacher, allowing me to lead students through studies which might initially seem challenging and complicated, to a comprehensive understanding of the subject at hand. In regards to my particular areas of specialism, I have an in-depth understanding of contemporary American fiction and continental philosophy, having written both my undergraduate and graduate thesis’ on the intersections of the two. And concerning my past academic performance, I was awarded an upper second class honours for my undergraduate degree and have recently received a high level merit for my MA program. I've tutored many students one to one over the past year in subjects ranging from English literature and Language to general essay writing, and I'd love to build upon my experience to teach those at a variety of different levels. Counterpart to this, I'm a versatile and effective proof reader, having successfully helped my students draft and edit countless essays. To paint a bit more of a picture about myself; in my free time I organise a series of philosophy reading groups, write creatively, do lots of reading for both research and pleasure, and cycle more than I maybe should.

Is Philosophy a hard degree?

Despite having minimal contact hours and time spent in lectures and seminars, Philosophy is actually a pretty hard degree. It requires a huge amount of independent study and thought, with students having to read complex texts by philosophers like Kant, Foucault and Sartre. A Philosophy degree will also mean a lot of analysing texts, discussing ideas and developing your own written arguments in a cogent and clear way.

What can I do with a Philosophy degree?

Having a degree in Philosophy opens doors to plenty of careers and doesn't limit your options when it comes to applying for jobs. Philosophy graduates might consider careers in which they can use their debating and discussion skills, such as communications, PR or management. A Philosophy degree would also be really useful if you're considering a career in the civil service, advertising, publishing, research or tv production. A degree in Philosophy is highly regarded by employers as it shows you're a strong communicator and are able to research, dissect and analyse information.

Is a Philosophy degree worth it?

Lots of students wonder whether it's worth studying for a degree in Philosophy, particularly as you're often studying texts and authors who are no longer alive and some ideas which don't hold much cultural value or weight anymore. However, a Philosophy degree teaches you to think critically and curiously about the world around you. Many of the ideas expounded on by famous philosophers are still relevant to the world we live in today and have formed the basis of many political ideologies, systems of governance and ways of life.

Best Philosophy degree tutors in your area

Studying for a Philosophy or PPE related degree? Get the best support possible with one of our experienced private philosophy tutors.

If you're starting to apply for University, you might be wondering ‘why should I study Philosophy’? Studying for a degree in Philosophy means exploring the big questions of life in theoretical, practical, logical, and historical contexts. Philosophy is an ancient subject, dating back to the Ancient Greeks, and so you'll be joining a long history of those who have studied it and considered its abstract questions for millennia.

What can I study with Philosophy? Many people complete a joint honours course when studying Philosophy, for example PPE, Philosophy & Psychology or Philosophy with a language.

What jobs can I get with a Philosophy degree? Philosophy graduates go into a wide range of careers; the critical thinking skills learnt on your course are highly attractive to many employers. You might consider a job in government, law, psychology or the arts amongst many other pathways.
