My name is Christian. Iāve recently finished my MA in Comparative Literary Studies, specialising in American literature, Theory and Culture at Goldsmiths University, and am looking to pursue a career in education. Iām passionate about making the humanities engaging and enjoyable, which I feel is something easily achievable through patience, creativity and strong relationships between a student and teacher. Where I thrive is when i'm helping to make literature, philosophy, critical theory, as well as the many tenants of writing effective essays understandable and accessible to a range of students from varying backgrounds and educational requirements.
Before my MA program, I completed my BA in English and American Literature at Goldsmiths University London in 2018. While my studies have mainly centred on American literature so far, the flexible nature of my program has enabled me to study a wide breadth of literature as well texts of a different medium from a multitude of cultures and periods. While providing me with a firm grasp of the major cultural, artistic and literary movements, my studies have greatly developed my analytic abilities across a range of different systems of thought. Teaching me to effectively; distil complex information into an accessible format, develop lines of critical reasoning, and construct compelling arguments from independent research. These abilities, when paired with open and clear channels of communication, prove invaluable as a teacher, allowing me to lead students through studies which might initially seem challenging and complicated, to a comprehensive understanding of the subject at hand. In regards to my particular areas of specialism, I have an in-depth understanding of contemporary American fiction and continental philosophy, having written both my undergraduate and graduate thesisā on the intersections of the two. And concerning my past academic performance, I was awarded an upper second class honours for my undergraduate degree and have recently received a high level merit for my MA program.
I've tutored many students one to one over the past year in subjects ranging from English literature and Language to general essay writing, and I'd love to build upon my experience to teach those at a variety of different levels. Counterpart to this, I'm a versatile and effective proof reader, having successfully helped my students draft and edit countless essays.
To paint a bit more of a picture about myself; in my free time I organise a series of philosophy reading groups, write creatively, do lots of reading for both research and pleasure, and cycle more than I maybe should.

Is Philosophy a hard degree?
Despite having minimal contact hours and time spent in lectures and seminars, Philosophy is actually a pretty hard degree. It requires a huge amount of independent study and thought, with students having to read complex texts by philosophers like Kant, Foucault and Sartre. A Philosophy degree will also mean a lot of analysing texts, discussing ideas and developing your own written arguments in a cogent and clear way.
What can I do with a Philosophy degree?
Having a degree in Philosophy opens doors to plenty of careers and doesn't limit your options when it comes to applying for jobs. Philosophy graduates might consider careers in which they can use their debating and discussion skills, such as communications, PR or management. A Philosophy degree would also be really useful if you're considering a career in the civil service, advertising, publishing, research or tv production. A degree in Philosophy is highly regarded by employers as it shows you're a strong communicator and are able to research, dissect and analyse information.
Is a Philosophy degree worth it?
