I am a published writer/poet and also run a successful small publishing press, focusing on writing in the experimental calibre. My experience tutoring began working with a fifteen year old girl a 4 years ago who was struggling with social anxiety and panic disorder. She was unable to go to school and I stepped in to help her pass her GCSEs. The whole experience shaped how I could help influence the student in an engaging and sensitive way, and inspire them to enjoy developing their knowledge. My aim for every student is to engage, encourage and support. Build confidence, knowledge and know how to achieve the highest grades possible. I held the post of Art and Design Lecturer and Course Tutor at Hackney Community College (now New City College) from May 1997 to Aug 2015. I also taught Textile Design on BTEC Art & Design, Foundation in Art and Design, GCSE and A Level Art and Design and Textiles. My specialism is Textile Design (print and constructed) with knowledge of a variety of print techniques. I also have vast experience in Art and Design applications at A level and GCSE Art, fashion and photography. This includes; Visual Recording in Art and Design, Ideas and Concepts, Visual Communication, Fashion Presentations Techniques, Exploring Textiles and 3D Sculptural textiles. In my teaching practise I introduce and cover all aspects of contextual study, historic and contemporary to inspire the design process along with practical skills to help extend knowledge and develop design awareness from initial recording of research, experimental drawing for art and design and fashion and textiles. This includes experimental drawing and mark making, fabric manipulation, artists research, composition, mood boards, encouraging the use of varying medium to inspire and develop personal style. I encourage students to experiment in their sketchbook to create a narrative that will support final outcomes for assessed work. I have substantial experience of project and curriculum development and delivery in KS4 and 5. I am currently an examiner, moderator and an assignment writer of teacher support packages for a major education qualification institute. In my own practice as a designer I run a small textiles printing business producing designer textiles collections for homeware.

This role included giving workshops to students on a one-to-one basis, and in larger groups. I was also a guest tutor for the MA Culture, Criticism and Curation course at Central Saint Martins. Before my role at the university was made full time I was able to volunteer with the charity Beanstalk as a Reading 321 Helper, supporting three children twice weekly to improve their literacy. These were children in Primary School who had been identified as being behind with their reading skills. I have also been involved with The Girls Network Mentoring Scheme. On leaving The London College of Fashion with a BA in Design I joined a studio as a designer of casual womenswear for many popular high street names. My interest in Art and historical costume led me to join the production and later the running wardrobe of The English National Opera. It is with the birth of my first child that I went into teaching, at first teaching clothesmaking, beading and textile crafts to adults. Part time study culminated with my qualifying to teach post 16 students in Further Education. I have since taught design, manufacture and textiles at several London based FE colleges. After Post Graduate study of Art History I also taught History of Art. I have an extensive knowledge and experience of teaching Art and Design at the equivalent of GCSE and A level at BTEC levels 2 and 3. For the last three years I have worked as Assessor and Moderator of A' Level Art and Design and BTEC Level 3 qualifications.
