I have taught Latin, Ancient Greek, classical studies and English at GCSE, A-level and university level for twenty-five years. I’ve taught beginners up to Common Entrance at prep schools in Surrey and London for fourteen years, and SAT exams for US universities. My students, as well as gaining scholarships to top schools, have gone to Cambridge, Oxford, Bryn Mawr, and top universities. I’m experienced in online tuition (Skype/Facetime/ WhatsApp). I enjoy sharing my love of language, grammar, literature, history, mythology and philosophy. I hope to find quirky ways to give insights into the ancient world and its impact on the present. I particularly love helping students overcome blocks and difficulties to rediscover the joys of language and and the magic of ancient cultures. I have taught English as a Foreign Language in Brazil, Italy and the UK, from beginners to proficiency level, so have a particular awareness of difficulties with second language learning. I teach Creative Writing at University of Portsmouth, and I’ve given workshops in libraries, universities, schools, prisons and theatres. I have also translated ancient and mediaeval texts for academic, legal and medical purposes.

I'm currently the Head of Classics at a high performing boys' grammar school in the London area, with three years of teaching experience at top London schools under my belt. In addition to serving as head of department, I am an experienced examiner for OCR (Greek, Latin, and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A level). I have a great deal of experience teaching students of any ability, having pioneered Greek and Latin language clinics at my last school as well as supporting candidates working towards Oxford and Cambridge entrance. I am driven, curious, and passionate about the subjects I teach. Having spent my teens and early adulthood acquiring proficiency in several languages, I am always eager to impart my particular expertise. Educated at Trinity College, I am used to working in a dynamic and competitive environment. During my university years, I worked as a private tutor of Latin, French, German, Irish, and English Lit & Lang. I also worked as a voluntary tutor on a university outreach program, teaching students from disadvantaged local schools. In addition, I spent three years as an academic mentor in my department, meaning I tutored groups of first-year undergraduates in Latin and Ancient Greek. As a new teacher and postgraduate student, I am eager to continue developing my craft. My approach is a holistic and highly personal one, and I strive to use that which drives and inspires each student to aid their education. I am highly adaptable to student needs and I am open to innovative and unconventional learning styles.

Soon after winning an academic scholarship to Eton College, I decided I wanted to study Classics at university. Whilst reading Classics at Oxford, I began to tutor in Latin and Greek; since then, I have taught both beginners and A Level/IB students and feel comfortable teaching at any level. Other teaching stints include working as an English teacher at a school in Tanzania and at a university in Myanmar. After university, I was an education worker for a year at a successful educational charity called IntoUniversity. My role at IntoUniversity involved running workshops in schools and a homework club for both primary and secondary school students (as well as giving UCAS advice). As such, I have a wide breadth of teaching experience- largely in the Humanities. My own interests are wide-ranging: in particular I love languages, travel and reading. This combination of interests has led me to undertake bike rides around Turkey (in the footsteps of Alexander the Great) and Uzbekistan (through the oasis cities of the Silk Road), and, more recently, a walk through Armenia. As a tutor, I aim to combine academic achievement with a passion for learning which goes above and beyond school curricula.

I earned my PhD in Classics many years ago, but all the while I have been teaching the subject I have continued to pursue it as a student. I have a great love of the classics. I've previously been the head of the Classics department at Queen's Gate School where I taught all Classical subjects -- Latin, Ancient Greek Ancient History and Classical Civilisation -- at all levels. I also helped students prepare for the Common Entrance examinations in Latin and Ancient Greek. I have tutored students individually over many years, including online in many different subjects including English, History and Philosophy. I walk my dog twice a day and have a keen interest in the sport of horse racing. Whether it's improving your grades or getting the most out of your studies, I'd love to help!

I am a graduate of Oxford University. I tutored throughout my studies, and consequently have 9 years of experience - both in the UK and abroad. I teach English Language and Literature, History, Latin and Greek and French up to A-level, as my main subjects. I have also specialised in tutoring the humanities up to A-Level/ IB Level tutoring, including politics, religious studies and history. I have taught at all levels, having worked with students as young as 5 years-old, through to A-Level students and adult learners. I have experience in preparing students for the ISEB Pre-tests, for 11+, 13+ and common entrance - English and maths. I have successfully coached many students through the application procedures to top UK independent schools, including Eton College and Harrow School, and to top universities including Cambridge University and University College London. I am a committed tutor and have consistently produced excellent results. I believe that effective teaching must focus on the student’s needs and must be engaging and fun. I was Head of Classics at a prep school from 2010-2021. I got a Double First in Classics from Oxford and have taught and tutored from KS2 to A Level. My main focus is Latin and Greek but I also tutor 11+ Maths, English, VR and NVR and 13+ Maths. Tatler Schools Guide 2020 says of me 'Both parents and pupils are enamoured with Classics teacher Mr Aitken – one parent explains that ‘the boys really feel they can confide in him’'. The Good Schools Guide 2018 says of me 'The teaching is dynamic, making effective use of technology without sacrificing the rigour of more traditional methods. In a Year 8 Latin lesson boys were highlighting words they had problems remembering followed by a session based around pictures to assist visual learners. The image of a shouting clam (clamo) or a vampire sinking its teeth into its victim’s jugular (neco) certainly seemed to do the trick.'

Hello everyone! I am a recent graduate of French and Hispanic Studies from the University of Queen Mary London. I would love to share my passion for languages by helping other individuals progress and develop their language skills regardless of their level, constantly boosting confidence and morale.I am very friendly, approachable and understanding which are essential when tutoring, as well as responsible, organised and reliable.Overall I am an optimistic person and have enjoyed previous experiences of tutoring English, French, Spanish and Greek, here in the U.K and during opportunities abroad as well. From me you can expect a positive attitude and great results whilst having a laugh too. Whilst completing my GCSE's and Alevel's at my secondary school I would help and mentor younger students who were studying languages. Whether this involved participating in their lessons or even during after school hours I was committed to the cause. After learning various methods of teaching and ways to encourage learning languages, I decided to take up the opportunity of tutoring Greek to a primary school student. At the age of 15, this was my first experience of one to one tutoring during out of school hours and prepared by myself individually. Over the course of two years, every week we would spend 2 hours playing games, having conversations and practicing basic Greek, which is my second language, growing up bilingual. The student was 8 years old therefore I did not complicate lessons by making them too intricate, instead they were simple, easy to follow and good fun. As a result the young girl felt more confident in conversing in Greek using introductions and descriptions etc. Similarly over the summer of 2014, I participated in a summer camp organised by Diverbo called Pueblo Ingles. This was also a very enjoyable experience where I would help students of a similar age practice their English, whilst I also got to practice my Spanish. Although challenging and at times intimidating it was a great experience and I loved seeing the progression of the Spanish students English. The individual that I was teamed up with in particular really enhanced their language skills and helped me learn how to tutor and deliver to an older audience. More recently, now that I am fluent in 4 languages and have moved back home, I help tutor my younger siblings who are aged 9 and 14. Given that my family is of mixed heritage (Greek/Punjabi), we try to speak these languages at home and get as much practice as we can. My sister is also currently studying GCSE Spanish and I usually spend time with her over the weekend recapping what she has learnt in class during that week. Then helping her advance her knowledge whether that is learning extra vocabulary or practising what has been written, orally, together we build on her strengths and weaknesses. My brother is a beginner at French now that is has been introduced at his school. Together we will watch French TV shows or use platforms such as social media as an informal way of learning the language and spending time together. I hope from this description, you now have a better idea of the kind of person and tutor I am. Please do not hesitate to get into contact with me. Have a great day!

I am a graduate from Edinburgh University with a First Class degree in Classics. I have a strong passion for classical literature, especially Archaic Greek poetry (though I have studied and enjoyed a variety of genres from a range of periods from the Archaic to the Byzantine periods). I have experience working with a range of ages, having been a primary school classroom assistant to 6-8 year olds when I was in Sixth Form, helping in their maths and reading lessons, as well as tutoring 11-13 year olds in Latin for a couple of years. At school, I also ran a Classics club for 11-13 year olds, which involved both informative and creative aspects. More informally, I have often helped younger family members and family friends' children with their homework, mainly English and maths. These experiences, as well as my time in a supportive role for international students during my time at university, has taught me a lot of patience and helped me to be able to adapt to the individual student's needs. With a strong academic record throughout my education (9 A*/As in GCSEs; 43/45 points for International Baccalaureate with Higher Level Maths, Latin and Classical Greek), I am well-equipped to help with general exam technique as well as giving feedback on essay skills. I am also able to help with Music Theory up to Grade 5 (ABRSM), having studied the piano for over a decade and with a Music Diploma in Piano. During university, I have won awards for both my language skills and my coursework, so I have a solid foundation from which to help my students improve both their grammar and their academic writing skills. Ultimately, I hope to encourage my students find their own interest and enjoyment in Classics and learning about ancient civilisations.
