Hi there, I have a colourful teaching background which began on the tropical east coast of paradise (Australia). My first teaching experiences were shared between the fitness and tourism industries where I was a personal trainer, aerobics instructor, weightlifting coach, marine naturalist and Japanese tour guide on the Great Barrier Reef. Over the years I continued to expand on my teaching skills and became a dive instructor, underwater photographer and CrossFit athlete. During these years speaking Japanese, teaching people how to dive and developing a motivational mindset as an athlete, I was studying to become a school teacher at university and tutoring advanced english. I am now a qualified primary school teacher, high school english teacher, TEFL (teaching, english as a foreign language) teacher, writer and poet living in London. My teaching philosophies are very constructivist. My students are encouraged and guided towards being active meaning makers of their learning and environments. I am also a pragmatist and humanist as I align my teaching practice with practicality, care and synergy. This is quite the opposite of the standard education system which is rooted in behaviourism (amputation of personal thoughts, feelings and emotions with a strong stance on positive and negative reinforcement). Hence, why I am choosing to take my teaching outside of the classroom. However, I understand that there is a place for passing tests and knowing certain curriculums and so I will teach you how to understand the curriculums and success criterion you may be following. If you work with me you can expect to be placed in the centre of very personalised learning and we will build great rapport. My personal goals are to become proficient in Japanese and become a Japanese teacher and translator and to write and publish a novel or ten in English (I love language). I am available to tutor English which aligns with the school curriculum and beyond for all ages and as a TEFL tutor for anyone who desires to learn how to speak English. If you want to write for creative purposes I am also here to help you. Let's write poems and stories together! I am highly flexible and have a sharp eye for identifying students' unique needs. I can work effectively and happily with ages 5 - adult. I am a big believer in celebrating both similarities and differences in people and learning styles - I will always make it work for you. I look forward to meeting you. Selina

I graduated university with two degrees in 2014, one a BA majoring in Drama and Japanese and a BEd (Secondary Education). I've been working as a supply teacher in London for 5 years working both short and long term contracts (having worked at more than 30 schools across the city). I'm currently working at an International School doing internal cover. I primarily teach English because of my love for books and Shakespeare! Other than English, drama and Japanese I also can teach KS3 Humanities if need be. As a teacher I am patient, understanding and strive to get the best out of my students no matter their age or ability level. Most of my long term contracts have involved me coming in to take on a normal teaching schedule and building students back up to where they should be. I'm flexible and think very well on my feet. When it comes to a students ability level, knowledge and work ethic I can say I've seen and experienced it all even in my 5 years of teaching. My lesson structure begins with a starter/question that usually gages where a students knowledge might already be for example; What makes a good play?. The body of the lesson is to work on the subject at a pace that I believe will work with the student (which obviously I adapt as time goes on) and make sure it has a level of interactivity for them to not only learn but hopefully enjoy! And the conclusion of the lesson would involve a reflection to see what they have learned and even asking what they would like to learn next time as it gives the student some control in what they're learning thus furthering their level of engagement. Finally a bit about myself... I'm from Australia moving here with one suitcase 5 years ago. I'm big into drama and public speaking, regularly performing at the Southwark Playhouse with multiple theatre companies - I've also started getting into short film work. I love writing, reading, music and travelling. I'm also a massive Rugby League fan being from Australia, I know it's the less popular rugby in the UK but that won't ever stop me from loving it. If you have any question about myself, what I can teach and how I teach it please just let me know! Melissa

Can a Japanese tutor in London teach me how to speak Japanese fluently?

Like most things, learning another language requires practice! To speak Japanese fluently, you must commit at least 2 hours daily over the next year. You can use eLearning sites, join online Japanese lessons, watch programmes in Japanese with English subtitles or get a lesson in Japanese. With the assistance of your Japanese tutor in London, you can get onto a consistent track to becoming a fluent speaker.

Will a Japanese tutor in London make it less difficult to learn Japanese?

Japanese is difficult to learn for native English speakers because there are four distinct alphabets. It's primarily the grammar and pronunciation that is the most tricky to grasp. Hence, getting expert lessons with a Japanese tutor in London is a terrific beginning to learning! Many say learning Japanese from a Japanese language tutor is a waste of money when you're old, but here at Tutor House, we have the perfect Japanese teacher for you, and you should enjoy your Japanese classes in London.

Why do Japanese speakers use English words?

You may come across Japanese people using English words in their daily language. If used in TV or performance, this seems more inviting to both audiences. However, it's standard for the Japanese to adopt or borrow a word and recreate the meaning of the original English word. This was to assist them in understanding the language! Your Japanese tutor in London can help you navigate the unique and engaging culture that is the foundation of the Japanese language. This way, you can form a greater appreciation for the nuance and complexity of the language.
