Hi! My name is Paula, and I am British-Chilean. I have a PGCE from which I graduated with a 1st, over 9 years of experience teaching languages, and have been an official examiner for A Levels and GCSEs. When teaching students that are preparing for their exams, I adopt an exam-focused approach, dedicating time to each language skill—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—individually. I incorporate past papers into lessons to build confidence and develop effective exam strategies. I also teach students in primary, as well as adults wishing to start or continue learning a language. For younger learners, my approach is interactive, utilising videos, songs, and games to make learning engaging. For adult learners, depending on your targets, our focus can be anywhere from conversation to career-oriented language, and we would use a variety of media too. I tailor my lessons to each student’s goals and unique learning style, and I believe in making studying fun and motivating. This way, a student can build confidence, improve learning effectiveness, and maximise their potential. My students consistently achieve excellent progress and have fun during our lessons. In our first session, I will assess your current level, determine key targets, and create a tailored program designed to help you achieve your goals.

Hi there, My name is Christian. I’ve recently finished my MA in Comparative Literary Studies, specialising in American literature, Theory and Culture at Goldsmiths University, and am looking to pursue a career in education. I’m passionate about making the humanities engaging and enjoyable, which I feel is something easily achievable through patience, creativity and strong relationships between a student and teacher. Where I thrive is when i'm helping to make literature, philosophy, critical theory, as well as the many tenants of writing effective essays understandable and accessible to a range of students from varying backgrounds and educational requirements. Before my MA program, I completed my BA in English and American Literature at Goldsmiths University London in 2018. While my studies have mainly centred on American literature so far, the flexible nature of my program has enabled me to study a wide breadth of literature as well texts of a different medium from a multitude of cultures and periods. While providing me with a firm grasp of the major cultural, artistic and literary movements, my studies have greatly developed my analytic abilities across a range of different systems of thought. Teaching me to effectively; distil complex information into an accessible format, develop lines of critical reasoning, and construct compelling arguments from independent research. These abilities, when paired with open and clear channels of communication, prove invaluable as a teacher, allowing me to lead students through studies which might initially seem challenging and complicated, to a comprehensive understanding of the subject at hand. In regards to my particular areas of specialism, I have an in-depth understanding of contemporary American fiction and continental philosophy, having written both my undergraduate and graduate thesis’ on the intersections of the two. And concerning my past academic performance, I was awarded an upper second class honours for my undergraduate degree and have recently received a high level merit for my MA program. I've tutored many students one to one over the past year in subjects ranging from English literature and Language to general essay writing, and I'd love to build upon my experience to teach those at a variety of different levels. Counterpart to this, I'm a versatile and effective proof reader, having successfully helped my students draft and edit countless essays. To paint a bit more of a picture about myself; in my free time I organise a series of philosophy reading groups, write creatively, do lots of reading for both research and pleasure, and cycle more than I maybe should.

Hi! I graduated from the University of Warwick with a BSc. in 2024, and from the International Baccalaureate in July of 2021, with 43/45 points and Higher Levels in Mathematics, Physics and Economics. My Standard Level subjects were Psychology, English and French. I have over three years and 1500+ hours of in-person and virtual teaching experience, and have mentored hundreds of students in that time. I am proficient in multiple subjects across their AP, GCSE, A-level, IB and international equivalents. Whenever I mentor someone, I try and take a hands-on approach, pacing the material appropriately and answering questions in the process. I'm proficient in a range of digital teaching tools, and am more than willing to adapt to new ones. I'm also extremely attentive to my learners, and try and tailor my teaching methodologies to their individual requirements. Outside of teaching, I love reading, writing and playing the guitar:)

I have just graduated from the University of Cambridge studying English Literature. My teaching and methodology is as student focused as possible, I am keen to teach the content required in a way that is most tailored the the students interests and needs, as I believe that this is integral to the success of the lessons. For example, if a student wants help with GCSE Macbeth, I would begin the class by asking general questions about their relationship with the text in order to discern both what they need most help with and what they find the most interesting. Making the student feel like they are leading the lessons is key to success in my opinion. Lessons would typically be around 50 minutes but I am happy to do longer if needed. I spent a year helping and tutoring students in the year below me at school as a volunteer, and I tutored mostly A Level English. However, I also have specialised experience helping with Oxbridge (and in general) personal statements, as well as with the English Literature Aptitude Test. My lessons are ideally for A Level Literature students, however I am also qualified to help with GCSE and primary level students.

Teaching Experience Maxim has tutored since graduating from Oxford in 2019. He has delivered over 1000 hours of tutoring, a testament to his commitment and dedication. In 2022, one of Maxim's students scored an A* in A-Level Politics, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. His students regularly gain top grades in A-levels and coursework. In 2021, both long-term Politics students got their desired grades and went to their dream universities. Maxim has experience across the Humanities, including various A-Level Politics syllabi and exam boards. The Oxbridge tutorial system (going through essays forensically and discussing them in depth) is central to Maxim's tutoring. These were, in his own words, "the best years of my life, with a learning experience I'm keen to share." Testimonials “The amount of history and your ability to create a timeline in order to help me learn the syllabus, although (it) may seem like common sense, makes the course much easier to understand thanks to you.” Andreas (A-Level Politics student) “Maxim tutored our son regularly throughout his A level Politics course. He was awarded an A* in his exam. Maxim has extensive background knowledge about the subject, exam technique and offers patience and persistence. Our son said he misses the sessions now the exams are over, which is a real endorsement. I would thoroughly recommend Maxim.” Jane (parent of former Politics student) Maxim has helped several students achieve places at top tier schools like Westminster, Highgate, South Hampstead, University College School, Wetherby, and Latimer. He spent three years at Trinity College, Oxford reading History and Politics. At Oxford, Maxim focused on British and international politics, achieving high marks in International Relations and US Politics. While a student, Maxim also appeared on University Challenge and was twice an elected member of the Oxford Union's governing body. Maxim got three A grades at A-Level, notching up 100% in UK Politics with additional success in US Politics. Maxim received offers from LSE and Warwick along with Oxford.

I am an experienced private tutor. I specialize in English, English Literature and ESOL. I teach privately and have spent 5 years at a Further Education college. Alongside this, I have been tutoring English privately face to face and online. These sessions have covered a variety of age groups including pre-school, primary, high school and GCSE. Classes have been prepared by myself and have been in accordance with their curriculum and examination board. Levels have varied from failing students who just want to pass, to higher learners who want to want to get the higher grades. I like to find a way to inspire my students and teach in a way that benefits them the most. Whether this is using visual online materials or a more academic approach. I will teach to your strengths and we can work together to find how you learn the best.

I am a fully qualified secondary teacher in History with experience both teaching and tutoring in English from Primary to GCSE level. I have worked in education for over seven years, where I have consistently received 100% positive student & parent feedback from my tutees or home-learning pupils and being graded at a `good/outstanding` level in my teaching positions. I hold both a first-class Masters Degree in American Studies (History & English) and an Upper Second Class Bachelors Degree in History with modules in English & American Literature from a Top 20 university. Over my time as a tutor and teacher, I have gained experience working with students across all Key Stages, including primary, and across a range of units and literature texts. The exam boards that I have taught & tutored on are: Edexcel 9-1 GCSE History; AQA 9-1 GCSE English; AQA 9-1 GCSE History; Edexcel 9-1 GCSE English; Edexcel A Level History; OCR A Level History; and I have taught the Cambridge IGCSE in both History & English. I fully believe that each student is an individual with their own needs and learning styles that need to be incorporated into their learning to ensure that they can effectively progress. As such, each of my tutoring sessions are tailored to the individual student - their areas of strengths and weaknesses, and ensuring each weekly session adapts to those changing needs. My sessions with students are interactive, well-planned, and encourage discussion and the exploration of topics or concepts which allows them to grow more confident in their own knowledge, and to expand their thinking beyond just a formula. With all my students, I have a patient, humorous and understanding approach to create a safe environment where students can feel they are able to openly express the areas that they need help in but also where they can express their own ideas and theories about historical debate or literature, thereby developing their confidence in their own abilities as well as developing their exam skills. Student Results: - 2014: A Level classes gained a 95% Pass rate with 67% of those students achieving grades A-C. - 2015: AS Level tutee achieved their target AS History grades of A/B - 2014-2016: A Level tutee who I had taught on a 1-1 basis had started with a Grade E, then achieved an overall Grade A in their A Level History. - 2017-2019: A Level History tutee who started with a Grade D in Y12, achieved an overall high Grade B. - 2019: GCSE Students achieved or exceeded their target/predicted grades. One GCSE student achieved a Grade 8 in English Literature and Grade 9 in History, exceeding their respective predicted grades of a 7 and 8. - 2020: Awaiting results

So you're stressed and agonising over that essay you can't write, or that text you can't get your head around? And you have an exam on the way! Maybe you've taken the exam already and didn't quite get the results you wanted. It can be daunting to say the least. But that's where I can help you. While still at school, I tutored some of the younger students and saw real progress and their grades, skills and self-esteem. It's a process I've been developing ever since. After graduating as an actor from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a 1st, I spent 5 years working extensively in all levels of the education system, from School Students all the way up to Consultant Doctors. The one thing all of the people I mentor or tutor say again and again is "I never saw it like that" and that's crucial to what I offer. My focus has always been on taking seemingly abstract, complex and confusing material and making it accessible using my unusual slant on things. And I can use this to help you overcome the obstacles in your way. I teach seminars regularly with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust using a text to explore essay technique, thematic ideas and language. I regularly coach students and professionals to develop communication, problem solving and leadership. All while building their confidence with a given skill. My approach is tailored to the individual, and is therefore flexible to suit their needs. But central to it are the following criteria: - Building core competencies relative to the subject: Essay writing, objective analytics, attention to details and how to expand on them. - Identifying obstacles specific to the student. Using coaching techniques, tasks and conversation to help them overcome it. - Exploring alternative view points and helping to develop a wider understanding of the material in context. - Building confidence and competency in bringing knowledge and skills to the subject in question. - Basic exam technique, focus and stress-relief to help think analytically under pressure. - Public speaking, presentation skills and ownership of the text if required for a public speaking role. Outside of the tutoring world my hobbies ( as you might have guessed) include theatre. But I've also developed a bizarre love of gardening, and no I've moved to a big city, I'm really looking forward to the challenge of growing vegetables on my window sill!

Find a Pre-U English tutor

The Cambridge International Examination, or Pre-U English course, is an academically demanding course. It also helps students to form their own opinions of texts, figuring out their literary interests and developing passions that they might develop further at University.

The course encourages critical thinking and independent thought. Working with a private tutor offers a chance for students to talk one-on-one with an English expert and develop their ideas. Students can bounce their ideas off tutors and discuss texts in an informal, relaxed environment.
