At present in my early 50s. I began teaching, in a London tutorial college, straight after coming down from Oxford. A few years after that, I interrupted my teaching career to return to university to pursue doctoral research, but I continued to see a small number of private students throughout my time as a post-graduate student. Accordingly, I have somewhere in the region of thirty years’ experience of helping students to realise their potential and, quite often, to exceed their expectations of themselves. My original specialisms were English Language and Literature, and these remain subjects I enjoy teaching immensely, but I have equal experience by now in History of Art, Philosophy, Film Studies, and Religious Studies, each of which I have taught to A level students and undergraduates. I also specialise in Pre-U English. The following is a quotation from the reference supplied by the school from which I resigned last year, after twenty years as Head of English and de facto Head of Humanities, in order to focus on private tuition: ‘Bill’s main virtues as a teacher […] are his infectious enthusiasm for his subjects, his immense knowledge and erudition, his intimate familiarity with past papers and assessment criteria, his commitment to his pupils, his willingness to make supererogatory efforts on their behalf, his provision of extensive and meticulous course notes, and his generosity with his time.’

So you're stressed and agonising over that essay you can't write, or that text you can't get your head around? And you have an exam on the way! Maybe you've taken the exam already and didn't quite get the results you wanted. It can be daunting to say the least. But that's where I can help you. While still at school, I tutored some of the younger students and saw real progress and their grades, skills and self-esteem. It's a process I've been developing ever since. After graduating as an actor from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a 1st, I spent 5 years working extensively in all levels of the education system, from School Students all the way up to Consultant Doctors. The one thing all of the people I mentor or tutor say again and again is "I never saw it like that" and that's crucial to what I offer. My focus has always been on taking seemingly abstract, complex and confusing material and making it accessible using my unusual slant on things. And I can use this to help you overcome the obstacles in your way. I teach seminars regularly with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust using a text to explore essay technique, thematic ideas and language. I regularly coach students and professionals to develop communication, problem solving and leadership. All while building their confidence with a given skill. My approach is tailored to the individual, and is therefore flexible to suit their needs. But central to it are the following criteria: - Building core competencies relative to the subject: Essay writing, objective analytics, attention to details and how to expand on them. - Identifying obstacles specific to the student. Using coaching techniques, tasks and conversation to help them overcome it. - Exploring alternative view points and helping to develop a wider understanding of the material in context. - Building confidence and competency in bringing knowledge and skills to the subject in question. - Basic exam technique, focus and stress-relief to help think analytically under pressure. - Public speaking, presentation skills and ownership of the text if required for a public speaking role. Outside of the tutoring world my hobbies ( as you might have guessed) include theatre. But I've also developed a bizarre love of gardening, and no I've moved to a big city, I'm really looking forward to the challenge of growing vegetables on my window sill!

I'm a student at Durham University studying English Literature. I received Grade 9s for both Language and Literature at GCSE Level at Woodlands Community College, and I received A*s for both Language and Literature separately in my A-Levels at Barton Peveril College. I'm a first time tutor, but I am quick at learning, and have all the skill sets available to make a good go of things. I will dedicate my time to you and help you as best as I can. I want to help students build their confidence in regards to English, and support them to achieve their goals, whether it be passing exams or becoming more advanced in the subject. I'm hands on, understanding, and will stand by you through the learning process happily until you feel you are ready to take on exams or branch out in your knowledge. I am more than happy to help with both GCSE and A-Level students. I can create resources that are accessible and helpful to you, as well as create practice questions/take past paper questions and mark the responses accordingly to build up confidence in an exam environment. I will adapt my methods to suit the student as best as possible so they get the best results available.

Hi there! I'm Ilinca, and I come from a family of teachers. I have learned the essential skills one must hold to make lessons interactive, enjoyable and informative. I aim to encourage students and help them build their confidence while improving their current skills. My teaching method varies on each individual’s preference and goals. For adults, classes are more structured and based on particular aims and goals. When working with children, I often use visual material to boost engagement. Before moving to Scotland for my degree, I attended an international school in Germany, where I lived for 11 years. I graduated as valedictorian in Criminology and Sociology, finishing with a 1st-degree classification. I also hold a B2 DELE certification, having studied Spanish for over 9 years. I am TEFL certified, passing the examinations with a 95%. I have experience teaching English, Spanish and German to both children and adults. In September, I will begin my professional teaching qualification in Modern Foreign Languages for secondary school students in England.

I began my education in Hong Kong, in an international school, then joining the British school system at 11. I received 10 A*s at GCSE and D1, D1 (highest Pre-U distinction), A* and A in the subjects English, History, German and Chinese. I am currently a student at King's College London studying a dual law degree (English and German Law), having been commended as in the top 15% of all modules thus far. I have continuously been active in providing a tutoring service to both fellow university students and school students preparing for GCSEs and A Levels, whilst also having written personal statements and essays for students, with success in top universities such as Brown University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London and UCL. I enjoy working at all levels of academic ability, understanding the stresses and difficulties of GCSEs, A-Levels/IB/Pre-U and university applications.

Hi, I’m Gokul, an undergraduate at the University of Birmingham. I’m on track to achieve a strong first class degree, as well as having 8A*s and 3As at GCSE level, and A’s in Higher Level Mathematics and Physics at A level. I have over 400 hours experience teaching Mathematics and Computer Science from primary to A-level, and over 125 hours experience teaching Chemistry and Physics, and am dedicated to making sure that students walk away from a session more confident in their ability to problem solve, and gain a deeper understanding of concepts taught. When I first sit down with a student, I spend time understanding their current level, and addressing any issues they may be having with their work. Using this information, I create a personalised tutoring lesson plan that aims to help them work through any problems they may be having, and form learning habits that aid students in understanding key concepts in maths and the sciences.

I graduated with a First in English from Trinity College, Cambridge. I am able to tutor both in person and online. I have tutored over 300 hours in the past three years, at all levels from 7+ to A-Level, and in exam boards from AQA and the other main GCSE-A-Level boards to ISEB to the UKISET for international students. I have taught both English and international students, and so am familiar with the varieties of difficulty that students can encounter and a variety of approaches for addressing them. I enjoy re-examining the elementals of the subject through tutoring. I aim to strike a balance between engaging, personal commitment to making the student see and realise a passion for reading and writing, alongside the necessity of navigating exam strictures and requirements - without making them seem restrictive or off-putting. I very much have enjoyed my experiences with small-group, Cambridge "supervision"-style teaching to students on various theatre tours that I have done during my time at Cambridge and this led me into thinking that similar, informal one-on-one teaching would be similarly rewarding. My students have all registered often substantial improvements, and no student of mine for 7-13+ has ever failed to get into a school of their choice, while no GCSE/A-Level student has failed to at least meet their desired grades. One student gaining top marks across the board after struggling with her confidence before our lessons. I continue to be asked back by different families if they feel they need a boost. I'm happy to provide references from individual students and parents as requested.

I am a fourth-year PhD student in the English and Comparative Literature department at King’s College London. I have been a teacher in this department for the past couple of years, giving me extensive experience lecturing and delivering seminar-style teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have been marking essays and examinations, offering students advice on improving the strength of their argument, critical reading and analysis, and structural features. I have taught English as a foreign language to non-native speakers abroad in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. This has given me valuable skills to increase conversational skills, vocabulary range, and correct grammar, diction, and sentence construction in students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. I have volunteered in primary and secondary schools as a tutor, helping students with special needs and learning difficulties struggling with English. I specialise in improving the written communication and critical thinking skills of GCSE and A-Level students in various arts and humanities subjects: philosophy, history, ancient history, politics, and, particularly, English Language and Literature. I am well versed in the set texts, syllabuses, and assessed content of several examination boards: Edexcel, AQA, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge IGCSE, WJEC, and Scottish Highers. I have also helped students prepare for Oxford interviews and admissions tests, sit the GAMSAT and BMAT medical entrance exams, and pass the IELTS English proficiency exams. I am a naturally patient and open-minded teacher who ensures each lesson is tailor-made to suit each student’s personal needs and learning motivations. I have high standards in the hard work and respect I expect from my students. I am motivated by my students' progress and am willing to adapt and improve my teaching strategies to help students achieve the academic success they deserve.

A Pre-U English tutor can help you prepare for exams, ace your coursework and strengthen your knowledge in preparation for University. English Literature tutors show students how to think critically about texts and write top level essays.

Why Tutor House?

We select our tutors based on their qualifications, experience and drive. This ensures that our tutors help students achieve the best results possible. Our students not only get top grades but really look forward to their tutoring lessons.

How many lessons do I need?

If you're looking to improve by one or two grade boundaries, we suggest hiring a tutor 6-9 months before exams. In this time, previous students have improved by up to 3 grades.

Find a Pre-U English tutor

The Cambridge International Examination, or Pre-U English course, is an academically demanding course. It also helps students to form their own opinions of texts, figuring out their literary interests and developing passions that they might develop further at University.

The course encourages critical thinking and independent thought. Working with a private tutor offers a chance for students to talk one-on-one with an English expert and develop their ideas. Students can bounce their ideas off tutors and discuss texts in an informal, relaxed environment.

Ensure you get the best grades in your Pre-U examinations and enlist the help of a Tutor House private teacher today!
