At present in my early 50s. I began teaching, in a London tutorial college, straight after coming down from Oxford. A few years after that, I interrupted my teaching career to return to university to pursue doctoral research, but I continued to see a small number of private students throughout my time as a post-graduate student. Accordingly, I have somewhere in the region of thirty years’ experience of helping students to realise their potential and, quite often, to exceed their expectations of themselves. My original specialisms were English Language and Literature, and these remain subjects I enjoy teaching immensely, but I have equal experience by now in History of Art, Philosophy, Film Studies, and Religious Studies, each of which I have taught to A level students and undergraduates. I also specialise in Pre-U English. The following is a quotation from the reference supplied by the school from which I resigned last year, after twenty years as Head of English and de facto Head of Humanities, in order to focus on private tuition: ‘Bill’s main virtues as a teacher […] are his infectious enthusiasm for his subjects, his immense knowledge and erudition, his intimate familiarity with past papers and assessment criteria, his commitment to his pupils, his willingness to make supererogatory efforts on their behalf, his provision of extensive and meticulous course notes, and his generosity with his time.’

Hello, My name is Max and I’ve been a teacher for the last 7 years. I specialise in exam entry, writing workshops and improving performance for the 11+, GCSE and A Levels for Language and Literature. I have a warm and compassionate approach, dedicated to each student’s development and academic access. I am proud to say I’ve helped students gain entry to St Paul’s, St Olave’s, Westminister, Dartmouth Grammar, Blackheath High, Henrietta Barnett, South Hampstead High and many others across London; sometimes helping them to win scholarships. I’ve helped GCSE and A Level students improve their grades from levels 6 to 8 and 9, working within the curriculum, homeschool students and students with learning difficulties. I am also an award winning writer (stage and screen) and know, as well as the joy of writing, the importance of academic discipline and articulacy, especially when in preparing for exams and applications. I studied scriptwriting at Central Saint Martins (BA) and playwriting (MA) at Goldsmiths University. That said, I do love to try and help each student find some pleasure in what they’re doing, with a patient and empathetic approach. I also run play and screenwriting workshops for kids and young adults and have worked the Yard Theatre, the Southwark Playhouse, The Gate Theatre, Flux Theatre, Theatre Workout, Actor’s Centre, Eaton House the Manor, Sydenham High, Alexandra Juniors and many other schools and institutions across the country. I have a real belief in the power of learning and the impact it can make on young people’s lives. I do hope I can help with your child’s studies. Scriptwriter Bio I've been a recipient of the Paris Royal Script Award, Screen to Screen Award, the Peggy Ramsay Foundation, a finalist for the Papatango Prize, Samuel French's Off Off-Broadway Award, Theatre Uncut's Prize for Political Writing and recently, the Nick Darke Award. I've also collaborated with the Wooster Group in NYC, The English Theatre Berlin and the British Museum as a dramaturg. I've had plays produced at Theatre 503, King’s Head Theatre, the Arcola, Paines Plough and many others across London. Testimonials I have two daughters, Grace and Alice, and Max, over two years was instrumental in getting them both into the top sets of English and gaining entry to Henrietta Barnett school. I would definitely recommend. Ann Marie, mother of Alice and Grace. Max helped my son, Chindera, get into Eltham College with high marks for his 11+. Pero, mother of Chindera. My daughter, Ann-Maria, has severe autism and struggled with her comprehension and creative writing. Max worked patiently with her and had an excellent relationship, helping her to really blossom. Natalie Campo, mother of Ann-Maria. He is also very professional and communicates progress regularly. Ayodeji Ojo, mother of Faith. Gayatri, although very bright, found her GCSE exams torturous. Max helped her to learn exam techniques which really helped to break everything down. Mina. My son George worked with Max in a homeschool capacity and, although English was far from his favourite subject, Max was the best tutor he ever worked with, improving from a level 4 to a 7 over a year. Sharron Delaney Zayed and Mohammed were helped by Max to improve their Engish language for GCSE. He helped imrpove their scores hugely. Clementine, nanny. Keira moved here from Australia and hated the academic system of her school so was tutored privately. Max helped her find pleasure again in reading while successfully helping her through her academic year as a homeschooled student. Keira’s mum. Max was an excellent employee – hard working, focused, responsive and a pleasure to work with. He had brilliant rapport with the students, and was able to deliver, clear, concise instructions, and work with students of all abilities to guide them through the project. I would definitely recommend him. David Workman, head of Youth Coordination, Southwark Playhouse Max has been working as a tutor and workshop leader for us for a year now and he is one of our most popular tutors. Hi! I am a medical student at the University of Nottingham with 4 years of tutoring experience. I am experienced in providing an engaging, interactive and highly educational experience. Being an enthusiastic tutor with an approachable nature who genuinely loves teaching and observing students’ progress first hand, I regularly see students develop confidence and their love for learning. I am familiar with the new specifications for GCSE maths and sciences, having sat the new specification exams myself and know that they are much more rigorous with a lot of new content. I achieved grade 9s in maths and all three sciences and wish to share my knowledge with students in order to aid their progress. Throughout the years I continuously monitored my past students’ learning and progress to identify those who were not achieving their targets and developed strategies such as regularly checking up on those who had not performed well. I do mini tests regularly to ensure I can highlight strengths and weaknesses in specific topics and adapt my lessons to cater towards these weaknesses. I believe confidence is key to your learning and we often learn best when comfortable with having a go and not being afraid to make mistakes, which I ensure my students are comfortable with doing so. Additionally, I have tutored for other online platforms in the past so have experience of both online and in-person teaching. I have an abundant supply of teaching materials for GCSE Mathematics and Sciences for all exam boards, including numerous exam questions, which I regularly use in my lessons. I have learnt numerous strategies of teaching which I make specific to each student's learning style in order to maximise their learning. What I lack in degree qualifications, being relatively young myself, I certainly make up for in possessing the right qualities to achieve the maximum potential of the student. Being determined, patient and possessing an excellent work ethic are the strengths that have helped me through challenging moments throughout my exams and university. I am capable, clear and concise in delivering lessons, proven by great results with students in the past 4 years.

I’m an experienced teacher and creative writing tutor with a first class degree in Philosophy and Modern Languages from University College London, including one year of study at Université de Paris-Sorbonne. I have five years of teaching experience with individuals, school groups, arts organisations and community groups. I’ve taught English Literature and creative writing with a wide range of organisations, including The Barbican Centre, The Poetry School and The Midnight Run. My specialities are English Literature, English Language and Philosophy. My students have ranged from 11 to 80 years of age, and I have substantial experience working with students for whom English is not their first language. My lessons use creative, engaging techniques tailored to the needs and goals of each student, to help them unlock their true potential. I combine a passion for the subjects with a rigorous focus on exam strategy and study techniques. My goal is to improve grades, and give students both the tools and the drive for long term success. I’m dedicated to fostering a safe, enjoyable learning environment, where we work to identify areas for improvement and map out strategies to maximise . I believe an approach grounded in kindness, patience, and fun is key to helping students with areas of difficulty, reluctance or stress. Overall, I am focused on helping students believe in their own potential and giving them the support they need to meet it. As a recipient of both an academic scholarship and an arts scholarship to my secondary school, I know how life-changing exam success can be. I’m committed to helping students secure those transformative opportunities. I’m also a prize-winning writer, poet and author, with multiple national awards for creative writing. Those include a London Writers Award 2021, the Poetry London Prize 2020 and the Verve Poetry Festival Prize 2020. I’m represented by Harriet Moore of David Higham Literary Agency. This work has redoubled my passion for teaching literature, and I have honed my skills through my years of freelance teaching. I offer high-quality, individually-tailored creative writing lessons. These can optionally be combined with qualification-focused teaching to engage students with English Literature and English Language, and help give them a practical understanding of the nuts and bolts of writing that they can then apply to their school work.

My name is Will, and I am an MSc Environmental Impact Assessment and Management student at the University of Manchester. Having achieved an A* at GCSE, an A* at A-level and a first-class degree with honours in geography, I firmly believe I am meant to teach the next generation about environmental, geographical and scientific phenomena. I am fuelled by a passion for the natural world and a need to teach the human world about meeting the natural world's basic needs. I studied this set of subjects because there will be a considerable need for environmental knowledge and new practitioners in this field in the future! I have been a part-time online tutor for over a year now, and I have tutored a range of subjects from geography to English literature. I have also taken part in peer education, where I tutored mathematics. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing my students gain confidence in areas they thought they never would. My personal aim for tutoring is to inspire the next generation to become passionate about the world around us! It all starts with good quality education. I like to teach lecture style for the first few lessons with interactive sections. As lessons move on, I like to work on questions and focus on activities that will enhance students' ability to succeed. I firmly believe tutoring is less about transferring knowledge and more about improving skills that enable success. The skills I teach my students are skills they will likely use throughout the rest of their lives! These skills are sometimes transferable throughout subjects and occasionally specific to topics. Crucially, I will adapt to how each individual student works! As you may tell, I am a tutor who loves the natural world! In my spare time, I enjoy surfing, rock climbing and running! Pretty much anything that connects me with the phenomena I seek to learn about in my education! Here is a little taster for you: Have you ever considered the first rule of Geography? Or even heard of it? Many people actually haven't! But this relatively unknown rule is possibly one of the most comprehensive and inspiring rules I have ever encountered. Here it is: "Everything is related to everything else. But near things are more related than distant things" Now take some time to think about it and we can discuss this in our first session! I look forward to meeting you!

I graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Classics before going on to become a fully-qualified teacher. I worked in the private school sector for nine years before focussing my career on providing high-quality online tuition. I tutor Classical Civilisation, Latin and Ancient History from KS2 all the way to Undergraduate level and I really enjoy bringing this wonderfully diverse and interesting subject to life for my students. I also have experience in tutoring pupils for 11 and 13+ entrance examinations in English and Verbal Reasoning which I find immensely rewarding. I have mentored students as a supervisor for EPQ projects, with a particular focus on written assignments. Helping learners to develop the quality, sophistication and originality of their written work is something that I love to do. Whilst I worked in a school, I was responsible for helping students to prepare their personal statements for UCAS applications, so I have a wealth of experience in that area. I have worked on applications for a wide variety of subjects, including Economics, Medicine, Psychology, History, and many others. I have an excellent track record in helping my students to achieve offers from their first-choice university. As an Oxford graduate myself, I am well-placed to advise applicants on what to expect from the application and interview process. As a tutor, I aim to create thoughtful, innovative and exciting lessons, which support my students as individuals. I am very motivated, hardworking and dependable, and I get a real sense of purpose from helping my students to achieve the best possible grades.

So you're stressed and agonising over that essay you can't write, or that text you can't get your head around? And you have an exam on the way! Maybe you've taken the exam already and didn't quite get the results you wanted. It can be daunting to say the least. But that's where I can help you. While still at school, I tutored some of the younger students and saw real progress and their grades, skills and self-esteem. It's a process I've been developing ever since. After graduating as an actor from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire with a 1st, I spent 5 years working extensively in all levels of the education system, from School Students all the way up to Consultant Doctors. The one thing all of the people I mentor or tutor say again and again is "I never saw it like that" and that's crucial to what I offer. My focus has always been on taking seemingly abstract, complex and confusing material and making it accessible using my unusual slant on things. And I can use this to help you overcome the obstacles in your way. I teach seminars regularly with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust using a text to explore essay technique, thematic ideas and language. I regularly coach students and professionals to develop communication, problem solving and leadership. All while building their confidence with a given skill. My approach is tailored to the individual, and is therefore flexible to suit their needs. But central to it are the following criteria: - Building core competencies relative to the subject: Essay writing, objective analytics, attention to details and how to expand on them. - Identifying obstacles specific to the student. Using coaching techniques, tasks and conversation to help them overcome it. - Exploring alternative view points and helping to develop a wider understanding of the material in context. - Building confidence and competency in bringing knowledge and skills to the subject in question. - Basic exam technique, focus and stress-relief to help think analytically under pressure. - Public speaking, presentation skills and ownership of the text if required for a public speaking role. Outside of the tutoring world my hobbies ( as you might have guessed) include theatre. But I've also developed a bizarre love of gardening, and no I've moved to a big city, I'm really looking forward to the challenge of growing vegetables on my window sill!

I'm a student at Durham University studying English Literature. I received Grade 9s for both Language and Literature at GCSE Level at Woodlands Community College, and I received A*s for both Language and Literature separately in my A-Levels at Barton Peveril College. I'm a first time tutor, but I am quick at learning, and have all the skill sets available to make a good go of things. I will dedicate my time to you and help you as best as I can. I want to help students build their confidence in regards to English, and support them to achieve their goals, whether it be passing exams or becoming more advanced in the subject. I'm hands on, understanding, and will stand by you through the learning process happily until you feel you are ready to take on exams or branch out in your knowledge. I am more than happy to help with both GCSE and A-Level students. I can create resources that are accessible and helpful to you, as well as create practice questions/take past paper questions and mark the responses accordingly to build up confidence in an exam environment. I will adapt my methods to suit the student as best as possible so they get the best results available.

I am an undergraduate studying Biochemistry at King's College London. Prior to this I studied A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at Newham collegiate sixth form (The NCS) which uses tailored methods to help students achieve top grades. Using these techniques I acquired from my college I aim to help my students achieve grades beyond what their school/college may have predicted for them. I've previously tutored Ks2 and Ks3 Maths and English, as well as GCSE Maths, English and Science at a tuition centre and privately. Before teaching a student a subject, I'll make them R.A.G their specification to identify the topics thy are the weakest in, the topics which they are slightly confident in and the topics which they are most confident in. I'll thereafter, teach them their subject content starting with the topics they are weakest in and will thereafter go through exam question with them to consolidate their knowledge. I'll also go through exam techniques and specific vocabulary to use when answering different questions so that they can maximise the amount of marks they receive in their final exam and thus achieving a higher grade overall. To get to know me a bit better, some of the hobbies I engage in during my free time is writing poetry and painting/drawing.

I am a current teacher and I have been teaching for eleven years. I first started tutoring at the age of sixteen, when I was recruited by the company that supported me with tutoring. Therefore I have nineteen years of tutoring experience! No student I have ever taught has been the same, therefore I place priority on individually tailored lessons. Most students come to me with a weakness or lack of confidence in the subject they need support with and I throughly enjoy seeing them sail through exams because they have been shown the appropriate technique and exactly how to hit those top marks. It's been so enjoyable having students and parents message me straight after exams in regards to how confident they felt. As a tutor I regularly check in with parents/guardians with monthly reports and examples of work so you can see the progress for yourselves. However, the support doesn't stop once students have sat their exams. I offer free UCAS and personal statement support to previous tutees to support them in their ongoing learning journey.

What do English tutors do?

An English Literature tutor can help with all aspects of the subject, including showing you how to revise best for an English exam and how to write a strong essay for your GCSE English Literature exams and coursework.

How does tutoring work?

A tutor works directly with families to figure out a student's areas of weakness and work out a plan to improve on these. It's fantastic for students to work 1-1 with an expert in English Literature. They can ask questions, learn new vocabulary and develop their analysis of prose and poetry.

Why Tutor House?

Our tutors are selected because of their expertise, qualifications and love for their subjects. Previous students have improved by up to 3 grades with a Tutor House private tutor.

Finding an English Literature GCSE Tutor near me

English Literature is a crucial subject for developing students' verbal and written communication skills. Students are expected to be able to discuss and write about the texts they are studying. The English GCSE specifications require students to study and be able to analyse prose texts, poetry and drama texts that include Shakespeare.

Tutors can help students to develop their evaluation skills and go through texts slowly and more in depth than there is time for in the school classroom. Whether your child is struggling with the poetry anthology or needs more help to identify literary techniques in prose, a private tutor can focus their attention on areas of weakness.

Many students need an English tutor at GCSE level to help them all the way through to their exams. This means, we recommend finding your English tutors at least three months before the big day so you can achieve at least two grades above your current grade level.
