At present in my early 50s. I began teaching, in a London tutorial college, straight after coming down from Oxford. A few years after that, I interrupted my teaching career to return to university to pursue doctoral research, but I continued to see a small number of private students throughout my time as a post-graduate student. Accordingly, I have somewhere in the region of thirty years’ experience of helping students to realise their potential and, quite often, to exceed their expectations of themselves. My original specialisms were English Language and Literature, and these remain subjects I enjoy teaching immensely, but I have equal experience by now in History of Art, Philosophy, Film Studies, and Religious Studies, each of which I have taught to A level students and undergraduates. I also specialise in Pre-U English. The following is a quotation from the reference supplied by the school from which I resigned last year, after twenty years as Head of English and de facto Head of Humanities, in order to focus on private tuition: ‘Bill’s main virtues as a teacher […] are his infectious enthusiasm for his subjects, his immense knowledge and erudition, his intimate familiarity with past papers and assessment criteria, his commitment to his pupils, his willingness to make supererogatory efforts on their behalf, his provision of extensive and meticulous course notes, and his generosity with his time.’

I am currently studying Biochemistry at University of Oxford having finished schooling at North London Collegiate School where I gained 45/45 in the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. I have had previous experience tutoring IB biology, chemistry, English, maths and economics as well as GCSE French, English, maths, biology and chemistry. I believe in altering my teaching style according to the student and have had experience in tutoring a variety of different academic abilities and ages. I am extremely organised and am happy to go above and beyond in regards to preparation and gathering resources to help the student. My experience in tutoring for IB and GCSE means that I am good at ensuring that all parts of the syllabus are covered and that the student is well informed of what’s expected in the exam. One of my IB students was recently admitted to Tufts University in Massachusetts while other students that I am currently tutoring for SAT are currently applying for numerous highly ranked American Universities.

Currently, I am a Ph.D student in creative writing living in London. I volunteer at primary and secondary schools as a tutor, helping students who are struggling with English Literature/Language. I am a published writer/poet and also run a successful small publishing press, focusing on writing in the experimental calibre. My experience tutoring began working with a fifteen year old girl a 2 years ago who was struggling with social anxiety and panic disorder. She was unable to go to school and I stepped in to help her pass her GCSEs. The whole experience shaped how I could help influence the student in an engaging and sensitive way, and inspire them to enjoy developing their knowledge. Also, as an experienced editor, it is in my nature to help the individual try and find their best way to express themselves in both an academic and creative manner. I specialise in the following: - Ages 10 - 18 ENGLISH LITERATURE: - Poetry - Shakespeare - The novel - Fiction and Drama - Literal and inferential comprehension - Critical reading - Evaluation of a writer’s choice of vocabulary, grammatical and structures features. - Comparing and contrasting texts - Revision/exam preparation and coursework/dissertation help ENGLISH LANGUAGE: - Critical reading and comprehension - Summary and synthesis - Evaluation of a writer’s choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features. - Comparing and Contrasting texts - Producing clear and coherent text - Writing for impact and purpose (selecting, organising and emphasising facts, ideas and key points; citing evidence and quotation effectively and pertinently to support views; creating emotional impact; using language creatively, imaginatively and persuasively, including rhetorical devices. - Creative Writing (in the form of "workshopping" and experimentation fo devices and ideas.) (If necessary, I have the experience to help students who suffer from anxiety disorder and issues surrounding self-confidence. Providing a tutoring experience that is aligned with the students personal needs and motivations) Please feel free to message me if you have any queries.

I am an experienced tutor, with over 10 years of experience. I am passionate about good quality teaching and a strong advocate for education. I enjoy sharing my subject knowledge and helping my students achieving their goal through rigorous work and emotional investment. I have a BA, MA and MSc in History and related subjects (Philosophy, Religious Studies, Cultures) and I am currently completing my PhD in the History of Emotions. As a trained historian, I am able to see the bigger picture, putting pieces together, with the strongest eye for details. Usually, I am excellent in identifying and addressing problems, especially in regards to my students or my classroom environment. My students have described me as a ‘rigorous’ and ‘inspiring’ tutor. I am Italian and I have been educated both in Italy (BA, MSc) and in the UK (MA, PhD). I have a wide, deep, solid knowledge of Humanities, particularly History, Cultural Studies and Religious Studies. I am fluent in English, Italian (mother tongue), Spanish (University level, DELE diploma) and French. I have also studied Ancient Greek and Latin. I can teach a History lesson starting from the etymology of a word, quoting literary texts and primary sources, using several different historiographical approaches. On the contrary, I can teach Spanish and Italian not only focusing on linguistic functions or grammar, but also explaining the meaning and use of the language through the culture and history of Spain and Italy. I would say my teaching approach is Socratic and solidly interdisciplinary. Essentially, I am comfortable teaching any subject in the Humanities. Currently I am working as an Assistant Tutor at the University of Warwick, where I teach a module focused on Early Modern European History, which is my area of expertise. I have experience in planning and delivering lessons, marking assignments, monitoring students' progress, being aware of health and safety as well as pastoral issues related to my students. During the last two years I have also worked for a charity called 'The Brilliant Club', delivering academic style programmes in schools, to promote higher educations for young people with high potentiality but disadvantaged backgrounds. I regularly teach Italians to kids in my local area and, when still residing in Italy, I worked for several years as private tutor for private families, assisting kids aged 7 to 17.

I am a Cambridge graduate, with vast experience as both a classroom teacher and private tutor. After my graduation in 2012, I worked as a Teacher of Classics at a private school in Glasgow. During this time, uptake for my subjects increased dramatically, and pupils consistently gained top grades under my supervision, including a full class of A grades in Latin during my final year in this role. I was also involved with university applications, with a focus on Oxbridge. This included helping to structure and proofread personal statements, assisting with college choices and giving mock interviews in a variety of subjects. In 2015, I took up a position as a traveling homeschool tutor, working with two teenage bilingual brothers. I was their tutor for English, Latin, Classical Civilisation and History, as well as SAT Reading and Writing. This experience of tutoring while travelling the world required a high level of organisation and motivation to keep my students on track despite the distractions of continuous travel. The boys' level of English improved hugely during my three years with them, and culminated in the eldest student being accepted to his U.S. university of choice. I have been tutoring online for six years, and, as an experienced online tutor, I have developed methods specific to online teaching which ensure that my students remain engaged and motivated. I utilise screen-sharing and Powerpoint while working online with my students, to keep lessons lively and enjoyable. As a highly organised and efficient professional, students always get the most out of their lessons, and I have a consistent track record of improving grades across a range of subjects and levels. I engage quickly with students of all ages and provide a fun learning environment where students feel able to make the mistakes which will enable them to grow as learners. I enjoy getting to know my students well, so that I can find out what their learning styles are, and how best to support them on their learning journey. As an intelligent quick thinker, I am easily adaptable to a range of subjects and situations, with a proven track record of getting the best out of my students and meeting high client expectations.

I was born and educated in England. I have resided in Canterbury, Leeds, Oxford, London, Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Oswestry. I gained five 'A Levels' (AAABC) at Notre Dame 6th Form College (Leeds) before attending Oxford University where I obtained Degrees in Philosophy and French. I proceeded to do Postgraduate studies in London where I was semi-resident at the British Library (1993-1998). I have been a widely published author since 1999, being the author of dozens of essays and monographs in Philosophy, Comparative Literature, Poetry and Psychology. I am co-author of the self-help book 'Reading in No Time' and author of the forthcoming publication 'French in No Time' (2020). He is a member of MENSA, the BAJ (British Assoc. of Journalists) and A3M (Academy of the 3rd Millennium). I am currently editor of the 'Nobel Prize Collection' for Living Time Books. I have taught pupils from KS1 to Postgraduate Level in the UK and abroad. I undertake an equal amount of group-teaching (lecturing/seminars/classroom) and individual tutoring (mentoring/coaching/private tutorials). I have taught in Switzerland (Geneva, Basel), France (Paris), Germany (Berlin, Munich), Italy (Milan) Poland (Krakow, Warsaw) and Slovakia (Bratislava). I am a native English speaker and also a fluent speaker of French and German. I am highly experienced in teaching children and adults with special educational needs - including Autistic Spectrum Disorders (Autism, Aspergers, Pathological Demand Avoidance), ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and other developmental conditions. I am quoted as saying: "Everyone can learn - it doesn't matter how differently we do so!" I specialize in GCSEs, A Levels, Entrance Exams and assistance with Dissertations, Essays, Theses & Coursework. I have explained my approach to teaching in the following way: "With every person that I teach, whether they are before me as an individual or as part of a group, first of all I take time to observe the way in which they learn - their own particular mode of processing information. Then, once I have understood their learning processes - be they visual, verbal, concrete, mathematical, or a combination of these - I customize my own teaching approach to that student's optimum mode of intake. This usually goes a large way toward maximizing their learning experience. What I find is of vital importance in the learning journey - and which is largely responsible for making it successful - is identifying with crystal clarity the exact goals which are to be attained. I make sure that my students do not lose sight of their goal and I make sure that their 'will-to-achieve' stays at a top level throughout the educational process. Without a goal, motivation falters".

I believe that any student can achieve success in a subject if they are given the right tools and the time to practice. As a tutor, it is my job to help students by providing direction, structure and encouragement. No matter what your goal is, whether to achieve a top grade at GCSE or A-Level, get into the school of your choice, or deepen your appreciation and understanding of literature, I am here to help guide you and provide the accountability you need to grow and develop. I have been tutoring for over two years, teaching students across a range of subjects including English Literature, English Language and Drama. I have tutored students for 11+ and 13+ school entry, many of whom have gone on to achieve places at their chosen schools. I am highly experienced at teaching GCSE and A-Level English and Drama, including all the major exam boards. Additionally, I teach English as a Foreign Language and have tutored undergraduate students studying English Literature, Drama, and Media degrees. My background is in professional theatre and I still work as a director alongside tutoring. I have worked for companies including the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare's Globe, and am uniquely qualified to help students who are preparing for drama school entry or sitting LAMDA exams. I continue to teach acting workshops at some of the top UK drama schools, including Mountview Academy in South London and Drama Studio in West London. If you would like to know more about my approach to tutoring and how I can support your learning, please feel free to drop me a message and I will be happy to arrange an initial free consultation to discuss your needs and objectives. Please note that I am based in central London and am available for face-to-face lessons if preferred. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this option.

I graduated with a First in English from Trinity College, Cambridge. I am able to tutor both in person and online. I have tutored over 300 hours in the past three years, at all levels from 7+ to A-Level, and in exam boards from AQA and the other main GCSE-A-Level boards to ISEB to the UKISET for international students. I have taught both English and international students, and so am familiar with the varieties of difficulty that students can encounter and a variety of approaches for addressing them. I enjoy re-examining the elementals of the subject through tutoring. I aim to strike a balance between engaging, personal commitment to making the student see and realise a passion for reading and writing, alongside the necessity of navigating exam strictures and requirements - without making them seem restrictive or off-putting. I very much have enjoyed my experiences with small-group, Cambridge "supervision"-style teaching to students on various theatre tours that I have done during my time at Cambridge and this led me into thinking that similar, informal one-on-one teaching would be similarly rewarding. My students have all registered often substantial improvements, and no student of mine for 7-13+ has ever failed to get into a school of their choice, while no GCSE/A-Level student has failed to at least meet their desired grades. One student gaining top marks across the board after struggling with her confidence before our lessons. I continue to be asked back by different families if they feel they need a boost. I'm happy to provide references from individual students and parents as requested.

I studied at Eton College and then Edinburgh University [English Literature MA (with Hons)]. I subsequently completed a Graduate Diploma in Law, and worked for a short time in business, before taking up a teaching position at an independent school in Oxford where I taught English for nearly six years. In addition to my classroom teaching, I also have a great deal of experience tutoring privately, both 1-1 and in small groups. I've taught English at a wide range of levels, including KS3, GCSE, A Level, and IB, and to many different exam board specifications (AQA, OCR, EDEXEL, WJEC). I'm also a CELTA qualified and very experienced teacher of English as a Foreign Language - all ages and abilities, including IELTS, business and legal English. I’m passionate about helping students to enjoy the study of English, providing stimulating, entertaining and dynamic lessons, which inspire, motivate, and empower. As well as focusing on improving students’ key skills and widening their knowledge base, I also put a great deal of emphasis on building their confidence, essential in enabling them to achieve their potential. I have a very positive and encouraging approach to teaching, and my students have consistently achieved excellent results. In addition to my role as teacher and tutor, I have mentored a number of students who have, for various reasons, needed extra help and support. I also have lots of experience teaching students with SEN. I am currently spending part of my time writing. Tutoring allows me to continue teaching - something I have always loved doing - but also provides me with the flexibility to pursue other endeavours. I love sport and play whenever I can, particularly rugby, football, cricket, tennis, squash, sailing and golf. I also greatly enjoy reading, writing, painting, going to the theatre, and watching films.

Hello, My name is Max and I’ve been a teacher for the last 7 years. I specialise in exam entry, writing workshops and improving performance for the 11+, GCSE and A Levels for Language and Literature. I have a warm and compassionate approach, dedicated to each student’s development and academic access. I am proud to say I’ve helped students gain entry to St Paul’s, St Olave’s, Westminister, Dartmouth Grammar, Blackheath High, Henrietta Barnett, South Hampstead High and many others across London; sometimes helping them to win scholarships. I’ve helped GCSE and A Level students improve their grades from levels 6 to 8 and 9, working within the curriculum, homeschool students and students with learning difficulties. I am also an award winning writer (stage and screen) and know, as well as the joy of writing, the importance of academic discipline and articulacy, especially when in preparing for exams and applications. I studied scriptwriting at Central Saint Martins (BA) and playwriting (MA) at Goldsmiths University. That said, I do love to try and help each student find some pleasure in what they’re doing, with a patient and empathetic approach. I also run play and screenwriting workshops for kids and young adults and have worked the Yard Theatre, the Southwark Playhouse, The Gate Theatre, Flux Theatre, Theatre Workout, Actor’s Centre, Eaton House the Manor, Sydenham High, Alexandra Juniors and many other schools and institutions across the country. I have a real belief in the power of learning and the impact it can make on young people’s lives. I do hope I can help with your child’s studies. Scriptwriter Bio I've been a recipient of the Paris Royal Script Award, Screen to Screen Award, the Peggy Ramsay Foundation, a finalist for the Papatango Prize, Samuel French's Off Off-Broadway Award, Theatre Uncut's Prize for Political Writing and recently, the Nick Darke Award. I've also collaborated with the Wooster Group in NYC, The English Theatre Berlin and the British Museum as a dramaturg. I've had plays produced at Theatre 503, King’s Head Theatre, the Arcola, Paines Plough and many others across London. Testimonials I have two daughters, Grace and Alice, and Max, over two years was instrumental in getting them both into the top sets of English and gaining entry to Henrietta Barnett school. I would definitely recommend. Ann Marie, mother of Alice and Grace. Max helped my son, Chindera, get into Eltham College with high marks for his 11+. Pero, mother of Chindera. My daughter, Ann-Maria, has severe autism and struggled with her comprehension and creative writing. Max worked patiently with her and had an excellent relationship, helping her to really blossom. Natalie Campo, mother of Ann-Maria. He is also very professional and communicates progress regularly. Ayodeji Ojo, mother of Faith. Gayatri, although very bright, found her GCSE exams torturous. Max helped her to learn exam techniques which really helped to break everything down. Mina. My son George worked with Max in a homeschool capacity and, although English was far from his favourite subject, Max was the best tutor he ever worked with, improving from a level 4 to a 7 over a year. Sharron Delaney Zayed and Mohammed were helped by Max to improve their Engish language for GCSE. He helped imrpove their scores hugely. Clementine, nanny. Keira moved here from Australia and hated the academic system of her school so was tutored privately. Max helped her find pleasure again in reading while successfully helping her through her academic year as a homeschooled student. Keira’s mum. Max was an excellent employee – hard working, focused, responsive and a pleasure to work with. He had brilliant rapport with the students, and was able to deliver, clear, concise instructions, and work with students of all abilities to guide them through the project. I would definitely recommend him. David Workman, head of Youth Coordination, Southwark Playhouse Max has been working as a tutor and workshop leader for us for a year now and he is one of our most popular tutors. What do English tutors do?

An English tutor can help students with grammar, reading and essay writing. English Literature requires students to think critically and analyse texts. A private English tutor helps students to hone these skills and write their best essays.

Is tutoring worth it?

In a busy classroom, students are often not stretched to their full capabilities. A tutor works alongside families to help students reach their full academic potential. The 1-1 support offered by tuition can't be beaten!

How do I choose a tutor?

We recommend checking out several tutor profiles. Look at their qualifications, areas of expertise and teaching style. Feel free to message a few tutors - you can chat to a tutor and ask them questions before booking a lesson.
