If you understand music, you can enjoy it! You love your favourite pieces of music - but there’s probably a lot of music that you don’t like. Whether you know it or not, you understand the music you love, just like you understand what someone is saying in English. Well, you can learn to understand other music - jazz, baroque classical, Indian music, anything! - and once you understand it, you might find you love what it has to say. Let’s discover some surprising new favourites! There's lots of mystery surrounding music - why does that bit of your favourite song make your hair stand up on end? Why are some songs good for dancing and others make you feel sad? What on earth is 'free jazz'?? Well, none of these questions need to go unanswered - we can explore them together. Hi, my name is Haniell. I'm 28 years old and I love music! It became my favourite subject at school when I was taking my GCSEs, and I carried on studying it - eventually I got an MA in Musicology from King's College London. I started playing music 20 years ago, and I play guitar, piano, bass, I sing and I write my own music. I really enjoy talking to people who are interesting in learning more about music. Whatever you want to know - whatever questions you have about music, whatever you don't understand, whatever fascinates you - I want to know, and we can talk and learn about it. I can help with GCSE, A-level and undergraduate courses in music theory, history and composition. The syllabuses you're working through can sometimes be intimidating, but they don't need to be. Whatever you're curious about, we can start there, and pick up all you need to learn along the way. I believe that feeling of curiosity is the best place to start when you're trying to learn something new. Together, we can put together an approach tailored to you - something that, understandably, your teachers and lecturers don't have time for. GCSE and iGCSE: AQA, OCR, Eduqas/WJEC, Edexcel/Pearson, Cambridge. AS and A-level: AQA, OCR, Eduqas/WJEC, Edexcel/Pearson.

I am a qualified academic and practical musician, and English tutor. I specialise in SEN. I have proven results, with my students averaging an increase of two grade boundaries and 100% achieving A*-B results. My academic background means that I enjoy teaching the theoretical side of music alongside practical music making - and ensure good grades are obtained at primary level, through to GCSE and A Level. I have experience teaching and leading in a range of settings, from one-to-one instrument lessons to group coaching to sectional conducting. This has taken place privately, in a prestigious public school and with the BBC Proms (among others). I offer rehearsal and recital accompaniment and coaching, as well as performance exams preparation sessions covering aural and sight-reading tests. I am also available for proof reading or editing of essays, UCAS applications and job applications. I am an enthusiastic, young tutor and have experience working with people of all ages and abilities. I enter at the student's level and create engaging content to encourage rapid progression. I am personable and patient with an understanding, and personal experience of, additional needs - with proven effective strategies. I believe it is my duty as an artistic citizen to contribute to the provision of arts and humanities education, and I love working with students to provide them with the tools to enable them to achieve their goals.

I am a professional music teacher, performer and writer based in St Albans. I teach music history, theory, musicianship, analysis and university preparation at the Purcell School, the oldest specialist music school in the UK. In addition, I hold a doctoral fellowship in Musicology at the Juilliard School, New York City. I focus on fostering enthusiasm for the craft of music in all students, irrespective of age or ability. My experience ranges from teaching near-beginners to advanced/undergraduate level. For my younger/lower-level students I create a rounded, multi-faceted approach that focuses on accessibility, discovery and freedom, treating every musical skill as feeding into one another, rather than being treated as discrete elements. With my advanced students I encourage them to penetrate deeper into the music that they are studying; to consider and discover aspects of music history and context; to broaden their listening and musical experiences to include a variety of different genres and styles. Whether the student be at a beginner or advanced level, I try to tailor the programme and pace of study holistically to each student's needs, rather than being governed by examination schedules and syllabi. If my students show an interest in a particular style, genre, composer or artist, or perhaps if I believe that a specific piece, melody or song will most effectively open the door to a new topic or area of study, I will try to incorporate those into my tuition. Being a tutor requires a high level of organisation and time management, and I rigorously apply these principles to every aspect of my professional life. Keeping detailed records of a pupil's progress and trajectory is very important, as is maintaining active lines of communication via the relevant procedures. After graduating from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University with a Double First Class degree in Music, I undertook postgraduate study in Clarinet Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, graduating with highest honours and the prestigious DipRAM.

Over my A-levels and gap year I worked face-to-face with many GCSE maths students (and a few younger) and lots of beginner, up to grade 5, piano students. I aim to be as enthusiastic and relatable as possible, as these subjects are the things I enjoy most and would love to see young people enjoy them as well, not just attempt to stay afloat. My absolute favorite parts of my subjects are algebra, which understandably is a struggling point for many young people, and in regards to music, that of musical theory and history, which I do try to incorporate a little of in my instrumental lessons as well. I also aim to help students with learning disabilities to overcome challenges as a result, and also to help them understand and incorporate the benefits of their neurodiversity. I myself have dyslexia, and am currently studying aspects of how dyslexics learn and memorize music. I have taught several students with dyslexia (and other learning disabilities), and hope to share strategies for coping with it, but also how it can actually help students in other aspects of education and life. My teaching style Maths - Firstly, every student is different, so in the first session I ask what the student struggles with the most, what they enjoy and how they prefer to learn (visually, practically, through theory or an example first etc). If they’re not too sure, I work through a range of questions with them, from a broad range of topics to establish their strengths, weaknesses and how they engage with problems. In subsequent lessons I prepare a topic to cover (or part of one), working through the theory by building up from important basics up to more complex questions and problem solving, working through questions together and then by themselves. I always ask at the beginning of sessions, however, if there is anything they struggled with during the week, at school or in homework, and cover that first if possible. If it is a bigger issue, meaning the basics of the topic are not yet understood, I plan a full lesson for a subsequent session. I have worked with many maths students, particularly at KS3 and GCSE level, and found this layout to be very successful (for both results and confidence in mathematical problem solving) and also encourages openness between myself and the student in terms of asking questions, discussing topics they find complex, and speaking up when they don’t understand something. In my experience, many students struggle with the principles of algebra and fractions, which have been rushed through when they were younger but form the basis of a lot of higher level maths. Once these topics are covered thoroughly, many students, I have found, are able to comprehend the rest of the course with considerably more ease. It was not too long ago that I sat these examinations myself, so I’m very familiar with what the exams include and how they expect the questions to be answered - of course every school and exam board is slightly different so I keep up to date with changes in exam board specifications. For younger students I ask to see if there is a year curriculum that has been handed out to the students, which there usually is, and if not we work through all the standard topics which are pretty much universal. Music - All lessons are different depending on the standard of the student and how they respond to different teaching methods. For beginners, I incorporate learning music notation as well as some learning by ear. As they grow with confidence with the notes and basic sight-reading and aural skills, I split the lessons into a fun warm up, where we might play through a short piece or they show me something they’ve enjoyed practicing that week, then some technical skills, such as scales, arpeggios, breath control etc, then work on pieces they’re learning, then finally a play through to finish and recap what we’ve learned that session. This lesson layout I generally keep with for more advanced students as well, although this depends on what they are working toward, be it exams, a recital, solo or group performance etc. I do not necessarily expect all my students to take ABRSM or other music exams if they do not want to, as it is not always helpful to the students in terms of what they want to be learning, and is in no way necessary. Often students want to do them, and I will have a conversation with parents and the student to establish what is best for them. I more encourage performances and finding what they love. The exams can be useful for UCAS and general experience, so I do not discourage taking them and am very familiar with the layout, having taken many and accompanied a few myself. I have taught from beginners, both children and adults, through to more advanced students performing regularly and guided them through exams, performance techniques, and some people starting to explore composition for their instrument. Some of the biggest difficulties that arise are students not being able to read music, which is imperative for exams and playing in (particularly classical and jazz) ensembles, so experience has taught me to really cover some theoretical and technical aspects every lesson, as well as the practical side. Most importantly I want to ensure my students engage with their studies in a positive way, and develop their own interests within the subject.
