After graduating from Cambridge, I went on to seek professional employment as a graduate engineer but never left my passion for teaching. Methodology:
Everyone learns best at a different pace so I will tailor our one-to-one tutoring sessions specifically for you. In our first discussion I like to find out about your ability, what areas and skills you would like to work on, and what time frame and goals you have in mind. Or if I you prefer, I can test you on a number of topics to understand which areas you need extra support with.
From this I can begin to come up with a comprehensive plan for my first few lessons, where I will explain the topics by covering some examples before letting you to try on a range of questions with increasing difficulty. This would then be followed by tackling an exam question on the topic when you feel more confident. I will also include review sessions in each tutorial, where I will ask a few questions based on previous topics we covered. After all, Maths isn’t about memory, it’s practice, practice, practice!
My personal style of teaching is focused on engaging students through discussion and questions throughout the session to help students become more inquisitive and engaged with their studies. Lessons are structured as follows:
I place primary focus on the topics the student has doubts. Having prioritised and cleared these areas, I then shift my focus onto the remaining concepts the student struggles/ is not confident in. To best do this, I follow the subject specification, as this ensures I cover all topics in sufficient depth and clarity (as expected by the exam board). Papers and worksheets will be set for homework as practice and will always be marked and reviewed the following lesson. Once or twice a term, assessments may be given (if needed) to consolidate the student's newly learnt knowledge. I believe this level of practice is needed to set all the information learnt into place.
